Why is there no built-in answering machine on Redmi Note 7?
Xiaomi is gradually removing the classic voicemail from firmware, replacing it with a voicemail operator (virtual answering machine). On the Redmi Note 7 with MIUI 10-12, the function can:
- 📱 Be hidden in deep settings (not available in all regions)
- 📡 Replaced with operator service (MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, Tele2)
- 🔧 Requires manual activation via the engineering menu or ##4636##
- 🚫 Completely absent due to firmware limitations (e.g. global versions for Europe)
If you don't find an option on your phone's menu, it doesn't mean it's not there, often it's just disabled by default or hidden under a different name, for example, in some versions of MIUI 11, the answering machine is called Voicemail and is in the call settings.
Method 1: Standard answering machine in MIUI (if available)
Before installing third-party applications, check if there is a built-in feature.
- Open the phone application (pipe icon).
- Press three points (⋮) in the upper right corner and select "Settings».
- Go to the "Voicemail" or "Voicemail" section (the name may differ).
- If you have an option, turn it on and set up a greeting.
If there is no “Voicemail” item, try an alternative route:

How to check if the answering machine is working?
After setting up, be sure to test the function:
- 📱 Call your number from another phone.
- 🕒 Wait for 3-4 beeps (or a predetermined delay time).
- 🎤 Your voice salutation should be heard.
- 📝 After disconnecting, check if the message is saved (in the application or the operator).
If the answering machine doesn't work:
