Why Xiaomi canβt just turn off calls through settings
Are you tired of intrusive calls, but want to keep your mobile internet on your Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO? Unfortunately, standard MIUI settings don't completely disable incoming calls without affecting data transfer, a feature that is related to the architecture of mobile networks: voice and Internet often use the same channels (especially on 4G VoLTE and 5G NSA networks).
Most instructions on the Internet offer either "On the plane" mode (which cuts off the Internet), or shutdown. SIM-We tested 5 working methods that allow you to isolate voice calls while preserving access to mobile data from hidden functions. MIUI It's important that some of the ways require root rights or special applications, but there are also solutions out of the box".
Before you start, check:
- π± Version MIUI: Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI (relevant for the 12-14 version)
- πΆ Network type: Settings β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Type of network (important for methods with 2G/3G)
- π Developer rights: If not activated, enable them through Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI (7 times to tap)
Method 1: Data Only Mode (without root)
The easiest method that works on most Xiaomi smartphones MIUI 12β14 β Forced voice shutdown through hidden settings SIM-This method does not require superuser rights and is suitable for devices with support. 4G/5G.
Instructions:
- Open the Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Choose yours. SIM-card (if there are several).
- Tap on Network Type and install only LTE/4G (or 5G if available).
- Go back and find Voice Calls (or VoLTE).
- Turn off the VoLTE call option (if it is active).
- Reboot the phone.
βοΈ Preparing to shut down calls
After the reboot, your Xiaomi will be connected to the network. 4G/5G Only for data transmission, and incoming calls will be automatically dropped or forwarded to voice mail (depending on the operator). 1β2 Reverse your VoLTE settings once a week, so check them once a week.
β οΈ Note: If the Internet is gone after the VoLTE shutdown, return the settings and try Method 2. Some operators (e.g. Tele2) block data transmission without an active voice service.
Method 2: Forced switching to 2G/3G (for older models)
If your Xiaomi supports 2G (GSM) or 3G (UMTS) networks, you can use them to bypass the restrictions, and in these networks, voice calls and the Internet are separated at the protocol level, allowing you to disable the former while saving the latter.
How it works:
- π‘ In the nets. 2G Internet GPRS/EDGE, And you can use a separate channel to make calls, and if you turn off voice, you can keep the Internet slow but working.
- π V 3G It's more complicated, because operators often link the Internet to a voice service.
- β‘ Internet speed will be lower than in the 4G, But that's enough for messengers and mail.
Step-by-step:
- Go to Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Type of network.
- Choose 2G Only (or 3G Only if 2G is not available).
- Return to the main settings menu SIM-Maps and disable the voice call option (if any).
- Reset the device.
| Operator. | Support for 2G support | Internet speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MTS | β Yes. | up to 236 Kbps (EDGE) | You may need to manually set up an APN |
| Beeline | β Yes. | up to 384 Kbps (EDGE) | In some regions, 2G is offline. |
| MegaFon | β οΈ Partially. | up to 115 Kbps (GPRS) | Required. USSD-request *105# to activate |
| Tele2. | β No. | β | Only 4G, the method is not suitable. |
β οΈ Note: Xiaomi with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro or POCO X3 Pro) forced switching to 2G It could cause the communications module to overheat!
Method 3: Use of the Engineering Menu (for advanced)
If standard settings do not help, you can use the engineering menu (MTK Engineering Mode or Qualcomm QXDM), this method requires caution, since improper actions can disrupt the communication module. We recommend it only for devices on MediaTek (Redmi 9A, POCO M3, etc.).
Instructions for MediaTek:
- Open the Phone app and enter the combination: ##4636##.
- In the menu that appears, select Phone Information.
- Scroll down to the Set preferred network type block.
- Select LTE only (if you want to leave only 4G) or WCDMA only (for 3G).
- Press Turn off radio, wait 10 seconds and turn back on radio.
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
For Qualcomm Snapdragon devices (e.g. Xiaomi 11T or POCO F4), the process is more complicated:
- π§ You will need a PC with a set-up QPST or QXDM.
- π‘ You need to connect the phone in Diag Mode (via the phone) USB-debugging).
- β οΈ Risk of "bricking" of the communication module with incorrect settings.
π‘
Before working with the engineering menu, back up IMEI! using the IMEI Backup app from Google Play or the adb backup command -f imei.ab -apk com.android.providers.telephony.
Method 4: Call blocking applications (without root)
If you don't want to go through the settings, you can use third-party apps, which don't turn off network-level calls, but effectively block them, mimicking the "unavailability" of the subscriber.
| Annex | Functions | Cons | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Call Blocker | Blacklist, mask lock, quiet mode | Advertising in the free version | Google Play |
| Should I Answer? | Public database of spam numbers, automatic blocking | Requires access to contacts | Google Play |
| Truecaller | Number identification, spam blocking, SMS-filter | Collecting call data. | Google Play |
How to set up Call Blocker for full lock:
- Install the app and give access to calls.
- Go to the Blacklist section.
- Add a +* mask (blocks all incoming ones).
- Activate Quiet Mode (calls will be reset without notifications).
- In the settings, disable the Lock Notices.
β οΈ Note: Blocker apps do not disable calls at the operator level, so: π The numbers will still be displayed in the call log. π° Some operators (such as MTS) may charge money for a βsuccessful connectionβ even if the call is blocked. π After restarting the phone, the lock may reset (check settings).
Method 5: Edit the build.prop file (requires root)
For users with root rights, there is a radical method - editing the system file build.prop. This method permanently disables voice calls, saving the Internet, but requires caution: incorrect changes can lead to a bootloop ( looped boot).
Step-by-step:
- Install a file manager with root support (such as Root Explorer or FX File Explorer).
- Go to /system/build.prop.
- Create a backup of the file (copy it in /sdcard/).
- Open build.prop in the text editor and add at the end of the line: ro.telephony.disable-call=true persist.radio.voice.off=1
- Save the file, set the rights 644 (rw-r--r---).
- Reboot the phone.
π‘
This method only works 100% on pure Android (like POCO F1 with custom firmware) and on standard MIUI, the operator can ignore these settings due to proprietary modifications.
If after editing build.prop the phone does not boot:
- π οΈ Download to Recovery Mode (Press Power) + Volume Up).
- π Connect your phone to your PC and replace build.prop with a backup through ADB: adb push /sdcard/build.prop.bak /system/build.prop
- π Perform a cache reset (Wipe Cache).
Frequent problems and solutions
Even after successfully disabling calls, you may experience side effects, and we've collected common errors and ways to correct them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Internet goes missing after VoLTE shutdown | Operator links Internet to voice service | Turn on VoLTE back and use Method 4 (blocking applications) |
| Calls still pass. | The operator ignores the settings of the phone | Try Method 5 (root) or contact operator support to block incoming inboxes |
| The phone overheats in 2G mode | Unoptimized operation of the MediaTek module | Return to 4G and use the locker app |
| Mobile Internet is not working on Tele2 | Tele2 does not support voice and data separation | Go to another operator or use Wi-Fi |
If none of the methods worked, check:
- π Settings APN: Sometimes operators block the Internet without a voice service. APN with parameters for βdata only".
- π Update MIUI: In new versions of firmware may appear additional options for managing calls.
- π‘ Alternatives SIM-Cards: Some virtual operators (e.g. Yota or Tinkoff Mobile) allow flexible customization of services.
