Xiaomi smartphones are known for their stable operation, but even they are not immune to failures: endless downloads, errors after updating, viruses or accidental deletion of system files. If your device stops turning on, slows down or gives out a message System UI stopped, do not rush to carry it to the service center. In 80% of cases, the system can be restored on its own - without losing data or with minimal consequences.
In this article, weβll cover all the current recovery options for Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices (including the 2023-2026 models). From simple reset via Recovery to flashing through Fastboot, choose the method depending on the severity of the problem. Importantly, some operations require unlocking the bootloader, so check the lock status in the developer settings beforehand.
1. Diagnosis of the problem: when is recovery necessary?
Before you start a recovery, identify the symptoms of a malfunction, and here are the key signs that the system needs repair:
- π Cyclical reboot (device is turned on, shows logo) MI and off again).
- π« Booting error: No command, System destroyed or black screen after update.
- π’ Critical braking: interface MIUI Lags, applications do not open, and the sensor reacts with a delay.
- π± Screen lock: Forgot the pattern lock or password, and Find Device is disabled.
- π Discharge in 10 minutes: if the battery goes down instantly after the upgrade, the fault in the core of the system.
If the problem occurs after installing custom firmware (such as LineageOS), recovery through official Xiaomi tools may not work, in which case you will need manual firmware through TWRP, we will discuss this in section 5.
β οΈ Note: If the smartphone does not respond to the power button and does not charge (even when connected to a PC), the problem may be in the hardware - for example, in the power controller.
2. Method 1: Soft reset via Recovery (without data loss)
If the smartphone is turned on but is not running smoothly, try cleaning the cache through standard recovery. This method does not delete user files, but resets temporary system data that may have been corrupted.
Instructions:
- Turn off the device (press the power button for 10 seconds).
- Press the combination of Loudness up + Power and hold until the Mi Recovery logo appears.
- In the recovery menu, select the language (usually English or Chinese).
- Go to Wipe & Reset β Wipe Cache and confirm the action.
- After cleaning, go back to the main menu and select Reboot β Reboot to System.
If the problem persists after the reboot, repeat the procedure, but select Wipe All Data (full reset). This will delete all apps, photos and settings, but save files on the memory card (if installed).
Backup important files on the PC
Charge your smartphone by at least 50%
Prepare the charger (in case of a long reboot)
Remember your Mi Account (required to unlock after resetting)-->
Method 2: Hard reset via Fastboot (if Recovery is not available)
If your smartphone doesnβt boot even into recovery mode or if it gives an error This MIUI version cannot be installed, use Fastboot commands. This method requires a computer with ADB/Fastboot drivers installed and an unlocked bootloader.
Step-by-step:
- Download the official firmware for your model (choose the Fastboot version, not Recovery).
- Unpack the archive in a folder on the disk C:\ (for example, C:\miui_fastboot).
- Connect the switched off smartphone to the PC, clamping Volume down + Power (should appear screen with a rabbit in a hat-eared).
- Open the command prompt in the firmware folder (click Shift + right mouse button β Open the PowerShell window here).
- Enter the command to check the connection: fastboot devices If the device is determined (its serial number appears), continue.
- Run the firmware: fastboot flash all The process will take 5-15 minutes. Don't turn off the cable!
Once completed, the smartphone will automatically restart. The first launch can take up to 10 minutes β that's normal.
β οΈ Note: If an error occurs when executing the command fastboot flash all FAILED (remote: 'Flashing is not allowed', which means the bootloader is locked. Unlock it through the official Xiaomi tool (requires a Mi Account and wait 72-168 hours).
What if the Fastboot canβt see the device?
Method 3: Recovery with the Mi Flash Tool (for "bricks")
If your smartphone has turned into a brick (no button response, no Fastboot), use Xiaomi's official Mi Flash Tool for emergency firmware, which works even with devices that have damaged boot partitions.
Algorithm of action:
- Download the Mi Flash Tool and install it on your PC.
- Download the full Fastboot firmware for your model (e.g., for Redmi Note). 12 Pro, it's gonna be a file. toco_global_images...tgz).
- Unpack the firmware archive in a folder without Cyrillic characters.
- Launch the Mi Flash Tool, press Select and specify the path to the firmware folder.
- Connect the switched off smartphone to the PC in Fastboot mode (clip Volume down + Power).
- In the program, press Refresh, the device should appear. Choose the firmware method: π Clean all β complete cleaning (recommended for critical failures). π± Clean all and lock - cleaning + Locking the bootloader (if you plan to sell the phone). π§ Save user data: trying to save data (not always working).

If the Mi Flash Tool gives an error of 0x80070002, try running the program on behalf of the administrator or temporarily disable the Windows firewall.
5. Method 4: Install custom firmware via TWRP (for advanced)
If official methods have not helped or you want to install an alternative firmware (e.g. Pixel Experience or LineageOS), use the unofficial TWRP recovery. This method is suitable for models with unlocked bootloader and requires experience with ADB.
What you need:
- π± Smartphone with unlocked loader.
- π» PC with installation ADB and Fastboot.
- π Firmware in.zip format (for example, from the forum) XDA Developers).

Custom firmware gives you more features (like Google Camera support on older models), but it takes away security updates from Xiaomi.
Method 5: Recovery through EDL-regime (extreme case)
EDL (Emergency Download Mode) is an emergency mode for firmware devices with a damaged bootloader or a dead screen, which works at the processor level (Qualcomm or MediaTek) and allows you to restore even those smartphones that are not defined in the Fastboot.
Activation of EDL will require:
- π Authorized cable EDL (or homemade with the closure of contacts).
- π» Mi Flash Tool or QFil (for Qualcomm).
- π Firmware in.mbn or.elf format (for MediaTek).
How to log into EDL:
- Turn off your smartphone.
- Connect it to the PC without pressing the buttons.
- Close the contacts on the board (you need to disassemble the device) or use a special cable. Where do you find EDL contacts? On most Xiaomi devices, these are dots that say EDL or TEST next to the battery. For the Redmi Note 10, these are contacts under the back cover, next to the camera.
- The device manager should appear Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008.
- Run the Mi Flash Tool and run the device in Clean All mode.
β οΈ EDL-The mode is risky: if you make a firmware error, your smartphone can finally fail. Use it only if other methods fail.
7. How to avoid problems in the future: 5 rules
To avoid having to restore the system again, follow these tips:
- π Update. MIUI Only through official channels (Settings) β The phone. β System updates: Avoid leaking firmware from dubious sites.
- π Do not remove system applications without root rights. Even if Mi Browser or GetApps seem unnecessary, removing them can disrupt the work. MIUI.
- π² Make backups regularly through Settings β Additionally. β Backup and reset. Save copies to your PC or to the Mi Cloud.
If you're a firmware experimenter, get a separate test device, like the POCO M3 or the Redmi 9A, which is cheap and easy to repair.
