The forgotten password from Xiaomiβs smartphone is a situation that thousands of users face every day, especially when the phone stores important data, such as photos, correspondence or work documents, and fortunately, the manufacturer has provided several ways to restore access, and in extreme cases, alternative methods will help.
Itβs important to understand that data security on Xiaomi is built in such a way that itβs impossible to simply βlearnβ a password without resetting it β this is against privacy policy. However, you can restore access to the device using tied accounts, backups or hardware features. In this article, we will discuss all the current ways for Redmi, Poco and Mi models, including new devices on MIUI 14/15 and HyperOS.
Before you start unlocking, check the obvious: you may be using the wrong keyboard layout (e.g. English instead of Russian) or Caps Lock is enabled. If the phone is synchronized with Mi Account, try entering a password from it - sometimes the system offers this option when you repeatedly enter incorrectly.
Recovery through Mi Account (official method)
The most reliable and recommended method Xiaomi uses is a tied Mi Account, which works on all devices that sync and does not require data resetting.
- π On the lock screen, tap "Forgot Password?" (or Forgot Password if English is the language of the lock).
- π± Enter the username and password from the Mi Account that was linked to the phone. If you don't remember the data, restore it through the official website.
- π The system will propose to create a new PIN-A code or a pattern lock. Create a strong password and confirm it.
- π² After successful authorization, the phone will be unlocked and all data (photos, contacts, messages) will remain in place.
An important nuance: if the device is enabled with the function "Find Device" (Find Device), then after 5 failed attempts to enter a password, the phone can lock for 24 hours, in which case you will have to wait or use other methods.
β οΈ Note: If you bought the phone with your hands and the previous owner did not untie his Mi Account, you will not be able to restore access through the account.
2 Unlocking via Fastboot (for advanced users)
If the Mi Account is not tied or you donβt remember the data from it, you can try resetting the password through Fastboot mode. This method is suitable for most Xiaomi models, but requires a computer and minimal technical skills.
What you need:
- π» Computer with Windows/Linux/macOS
- π USB-cable (preferably original)
- π¦ Mi Flash Unlock (download from the official website)
- π§ Drivers. ADB Fastboot (installs automatically when you connect your phone)
Step-by-step:
- Turn off your phone. Press Volume down + Power before the Fastboot logo appears.
- Connect the device to your computer. Run Mi Flash Unlock and log in to your Mi Account (yes, even a password reset requires a binding!).
- Follow the instructions of the program. It will automatically unlock the bootloader and reset the password.
- After restarting, set your phone as new.
β οΈ Note: On new models (Xiaomi) 13/14, Redmi Note 12 and newer) may be required 72-Waiting for hours after you've linked your account to your device.

3. Recovery Mode reset (data loss)
If previous methods didnβt work, the radical way is hard reset via Recovery Mode, which erases all data from the phone, including photos, apps and settings, but is guaranteed to unlock the device.
How to start Recovery Mode:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the combination of Loudness up + Power and hold for 10-15 seconds until the menu with the Mi logo appears.
- Use the volume buttons for navigation and the power button to select the Wipe Data (or Clear Data) item.
- Confirm the action by choosing Confirm.
- After reset, select Reboot to reboot.
The phone will boot as new. You will need to go through the initial setup, including the Mi Account binding (unless you want to re-enact the lock).
What if Recovery Mode asks for a password?
| Unlocking method | Mi Account required | Data retained | Difficulty | Implementation time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recovery through Mi Account | β Yes. | β Yes. | β | 2-5 minutes |
| Fastboot (Mi Flash Unlock) | β Yes. | β No (reset) | βββ | 10.30 minutes |
| Recovery Mode | β No. | β No (full reset) | ββ | 5-10 minutes |
| Reset via Find Device | β Yes. | β No. | ββ | 5-15 minutes |
4 Remote unlocking through Find Device
If the phone has Find Device enabled, you can reset your password remotely via a web interface, which works even if the phone is not on hand, but requires:
- π Active Internet connection on your phone (Wi-Fi or mobile network).
- π Linked and confirmed Mi Account.
- π Enable geolocation (not necessarily, but speeds up device search).
Instructions:
- Go to i.mi.com and log in.
- Select a locked phone from the list of devices.
- Click on "Erase Data" (Erase Data).
- Confirm action. The phone will be reset to factory settings, and the password deleted.
Important: Once you remotely unlock, the phone may require input from the last Mi Account tied at the first setup, without which it will be impossible to use the device.

Before using Find Device, check if the feature on your phone is enabled. To do this, go to Settings β Mi Account β Find Device on another Xiaomi device or through the web version of your account.
5. Alternative methods (for older models)
Xiaomi devices before 2018 (e.g. Redmi 4X, Mi 5) sometimes run workarounds that the manufacturer later closed. We do not recommend using them on new smartphones, but for older models they may be relevant:
- π Call to locked phone: Call the device from another number, take the call and quickly go to settings to disable the password. MIUI 12 and newer, this method does not work.
- π Battery discharge: Wait until the phone is completely discharged. When you connect to a charge, sometimes you can go to the menu without a password%.
- π₯οΈ ADB-Teams: If Developer Mode and Debugging were previously enabled USB, You can try to delete gesture.key or password.key via the command: adb shell rm /data/system/gesture.key After the reboot, the password will reset, but this method only works on Android. 7β9.
β οΈ Note: Use of alternative methods on new devices (Xiaomi) 12/13/14, Redmi Note 11/12) can lead to a complete lock of the bootloader and the inability to continue using the phone without contacting the service center.
6. Contact the Xiaomi Service Center
If all of these methods did not work, the last option is to contact an authorized service center.
- π Phone bought from hands and tied to someone else's Mi Account.
- π± The device will give an error "This device is locked" when you try to unlock it.
- π§ The screen or buttons are not working, which prevents you from entering a password.
What will be required to unlock:
- Check or proof of purchase (if the phone is new).
- Passport for identification.
- Data from Mi Account if it is linked to the device.
The cost of the service varies from 500 to 2000 rubles depending on the model and the reason for the lock, and in some cases (for example, when theft) unlocking may not be possible for legal reasons.
π‘
The official service is the only legal way to unlock Xiaomi if all other methods fail, and self-attempts to bypass protection on new models can lead to irreversible lockdown.
