A broken power button on Xiaomi is a problem that owners of Redmi, POCO and Mi smartphones face after 2-3 years of use. Even if the mechanism does not respond to pressing, you can turn off the phone without physical interference. In this article, 5 proven methods, including software commands, hardware manipulation and hidden MIUI functions.
Importantly, not all methods are universal. For example, disabling through ADB requires pre-tuning, and battery recovery is possible only on older models with a removable lid (for example, Redmi 3S or Mi 4i), We will analyze each option taking into account the characteristics of different generations of Xiaomi smartphones, from Redmi Note 4X to POCO F5 Pro.
1. Turn off via the settings menu (works on all models)
The easiest way is to use the built-in MIUI tools, which is suitable if the phone's screen responds to touch and the system is loaded.
- Unlock your smartphone (PIN, pattern lock or fingerprint).
- Open the settings (cog icon).
- Go to About Phone (in older versions of MIUI - About Device).
- Slip the button Turn off (or Reset β Shut down).
- Confirm the action by pressing OK.
β οΈ Note: On some models (e.g, POCO X3 Pro) the path may be different. If the About Phone section is missing, try the alternative route: Settings β System system β Additionally. β Shutdown.
Is the phone fully charged (minimum level is 5%)
Are there any active system updates (it is dangerous to interrupt the process)
Whether low charge notifications are turned off (they can block the shutdown)
Whether important data is saved (forcible disabling may result in loss of unsaved files)-->
If the settings menu is not available due to a system failure, proceed to the next method.
2. Forced Disconnection via ADB (for advanced users)
ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is a tool for debugging Android devices via a computer. It allows you to turn off Xiaomi even with a power button that is broken, but requires pre-activation of Developer Mode and USB Debugging.
If these settings were enabled in advance, follow the instructions:
- Connect your phone to your PC through USB-cable (preferably original).
- Open the command line (Win + R β enter cmd).
- Enter the command to check the connection: adb devices Your device should appear in the list.
- Execute the shutdown command: adb shell reboot -p
β οΈ Attention: If debugging is USB If you have not been activated before, this method will not work, then try activating the mode via the emergency menu (see section 4).
What if the ADB canβt see the device?
For Mac/Linux users, the commands are similar, but you may need to install adb via brew install android-platform-tools (Mac) or sudo apt install adb (Linux).
3. Use of gestures or volume buttons (hidden MIUI functions)
Some Xiaomi firmware has hidden combinations to turn off without a power button. These methods donβt work on all models, but itβs worth a try:
- π Press the volume buttons. On some devices (for example, the Redmi Note 8 Pro) long-term retention Volume up + Loudness down for 10-15 seconds causes the reboot menu.
- π± Turn off gesture. POCO F3 and newer: swipe down the screen with two fingers from the top edge and hold for 3 seconds β the power menu will appear.
- π Emergency mode. 10/11: press the volume up quickly + Loudness down + Camera (if the camera button is physical).
If these combinations didnβt work, check if they are disabled in the settings. Go to Settings β Special Options β Physical buttons and turn on the Alternative Shutdown option (if available).

Instructions:
- Turn off the phone (if it is not already turned off) by holding the power + volume button (if the power button is partially working).
- Click the combination: For most models: Volume up + Power (hold 10-15 seconds). For POCO F1/F2: Volume down + Power.

β οΈ Note: Do not select Wipe Data or Factory Reset in this menu, this will result in a complete reset and data deletion!
| Xiaomi model | Combination for Recovery | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 7/8/9 | Volume up + Nutrition | The Note 9 Pro may require a charging connection. |
| POCO X3/X3 Pro | Loudness down + Nutrition | Hold until the POCO logo appears. |
| Mi 11 Ultra | Volume up + Nutrition | Menu in Chinese - look for the character "turn off". |
| Black Shark 4/5 | Volume up + Volume down + Nutrition | The buttons must be pressed at the same time. |
Physical shutdown: battery retrieval (older models only)
On Xiaomi smartphones before 2017 (e.g. Redmi 3/3S, Mi 4/4i), the battery is removable. If other methods have not worked, you can physically disconnect the battery:
- Remove the back cover (a plastic shoulder blade or mediator will be required).
- Carefully tuck the battery and disconnect the plume (if any).
- Wait 30 seconds and plug the battery back in.
β οΈ Attention: Frequent discharges to 0% reduce battery life. Use this method only as a last resort!

If the phone doesn't turn off even after it's discharged, it could indicate a hardware malfunction in the power board, which requires a diagnosis at the service center.

Turning off the phone is half the task. Now you need to turn it on. Here are 3 working ways.
