Why a standard shutdown may not work
Xiaomi 13 MIUI-based smartphones often behave outside the box when trying to shut down. Unlike pure Android devices, these include additional layers of optimization that can block the usual power button retention, such as if Ultra Battery Saver mode is activated or Mi Cloud background synchronization is running, the system may ignore the shutdown command until critical processes are complete.
Another common problem is the βhangβ of the interface after updates. MIUI 14.0.4β14.0.6 firmware for the Xiaomi 13 has been observed to have bugs that react to prolonged pressing of the power button, where only the lock screen appears instead of the switch-off menu, in which case alternative methods are required, which we will discuss below.
Also worth considering hardware features: Xiaomi 13 uses a tactile power button with a fingerprint sensor, which can not work properly when moisture or mechanical damage.
Method 1: Standard shutdown via the power menu
The most obvious method is to use a software menu, which works 90 percent of the time if the system is not getting stuck.
- Unlock the screen (PIN, pattern lock, or fingerprint).
- Hold the power button (located on the right side) for 2-3 seconds.
- The screen will appear menu with three options: Turn off, Reboot and Flight Mode.
- Slip on Turn off and confirm the action.
If the menu doesn't appear:
- π Check if the mode in your pocket is activated (Settings) β Display. β It's in your pocket. It blocks random taps.
- π± Make sure the screen is not locked by the app (e.g. App Lock in the app). MIUI).
- π If the charge is below 5%, the system can ignore the command to avoid a full discharge.

Method 2: Forced shutdown (Hard Reset)
When the smartphone freezes completely β doesn't respond to touch, doesn't open the power menu β it requires a hardware reset, which simulates battery extraction (although it's not removable in Xiaomi 13), and it's important that all the unsaved data in the open applications is lost.
Instructions for forced disconnection:
- Hold the power button and the volume button at the same time.
- Keep them clamped for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes out and the Mi logo appears (a sign of a successful reboot).
- Release the buttons. If you want to turn it off rather than restart, re-hold the power button after the logo appears until the device is completely turned off.

β οΈ Warning: Frequent use of Hard Reset may cause file system damage ext4, We recommend using this method no more than 1 time per week.
Method 3: Shutting down via Fastboot (for advanced)
If the smartphone is stuck in the boot phase (the endless Mi logo), but reacts to the connection to the PC, you can turn it off via Fastboot mode. ADB/Fastboot cable USB-C.
Step-by-step:
- Connect Xiaomi 13 to your PC.
- Open the command line (Windows) or the terminal (macOS/Linux).
- Enter the command to check the connection: fastboot devices If the device is determined (the serial number will appear), proceed to the next step.
- Turn off the smartphone command: fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0 After execution, the device immediately shuts down.
Alternative command (if the first one fails):
fastboot reboot poweroff| Team team. | Description | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0 | Forced power outage | If the smartphone is in Fastboot mode, but does not turn off in the standard way |
| fastboot reboot poweroff | Software shutdown through the bootloader | If the first team did not work or caused an error |
| fastboot reboot recovery | Transition to Recovery Mode | If you need to turn off the device through the Recovery menu |
1. Reconnect the cable (use the original USB-C).
2. Install Mi Flash Tool drivers from the official Xiaomi website.
3.Reboot the PC and try again.-->
Method 4: Disconnecting with Recovery Mode
If the Xiaomi 13 loads but doesnβt respond to shutdown commands, you can use the Recovery menu. This method is also useful if you need to reset your settings before selling or repairing.
How to log in to Recovery and turn off the device:
- Turn off your smartphone (if it reacts) or perform Hard Reset (method 2).
- Once the screen goes out, hold the power button + volume button.
- Release the buttons when the Mi logo and Recovery menu appear (English or Chinese).
- Use volume buttons to navigate and select Power off (or similar).
- Confirm the choice of the power button.
The Recovery menu also has options:
- π Reboot - reboot.
- ποΈ Wipe Data β reset to factory settings (deletes all data!).
- π₯ Apply update β installing firmware from a memory card.
β οΈ Note: In some versions MIUI Recovery menus can be in Chinese.Power off is usually denoted as (guΔn jΔ«). Don't confuse him with (chΓ³ng qΗ β restart).
Method 5: Automatic timer shutdown
The MIUI Auto Shutdown feature allows you to schedule a smartphone shutdown at a given time, which is handy if you forget to turn off your phone at night or want to limit your device usage time.
How to set up:
- Open Settings β Battery and Performance β Automatic Shutdown.
- Activate the switch Enable automatic shutdown.
- Set a shutdown time (for example, 23:00).
- Choose the days of the week when the function should work.
- Save the settings.
Limitations of function:
- β° It does not work if the smartphone is discharged below 15%.
- π Cancelled when connected to charging.
- π΅ It does not work if you download files or update the system at the time of shutdown.
π‘
Auto-timer shutdown is the only way to guarantee that Xiaomi 13 will be disabled without manual intervention, however, it wonβt work if the device is locked with a password and not unlocked within 4 hours of the scheduled time.
What to do if Xiaomi 13 doesnβt turn off completely
If none of the methods worked, the problem could be hardware, and here are the most common causes and solutions:
| Symptoms. | Probable cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Does not respond to the power button, the screen is black | A button plume or power controller is damaged | Replacement of the plume in the service center (cost) ~1 500β2 500 β½) |
| Hanging on the Mi logo, not loading | Boot partition damage after failed update | Flashing through Mi Flash Tool (requires an unlocked bootloader) |
| spontaneously switched on after switching off | Failure of the PMIC (Power Controller) | Diagnostics in the service, it is possible to replace the motherboard |
| It only turns off for 5-10 seconds, then switches on again. | Fastboot or EDL mode activated due to software failure | Turn off the USB cable, perform Hard Reset (method 2) |
If the smartphone is warranty, do not try to disassemble it yourself - this will void warranty obligations. Contact the authorized Xiaomi service center with a check and a box.
For independent diagnosis, you can use the test of hardware components:
- Enter the dialer code: ##4636##.
- Choose Equipment Testing.
- Check the status of the buttons and the power controller.
