Why users want to remove the password on Redmi – and when it is dangerous
Xiaomi Redmi is famous for its security, but sometimes locking the screen becomes a burden. PIN-I'm going to go through a code every 5 minutes, or I'm going to buy a used device with someone else's password, and maybe the pattern lock is too complicated, and the fingerprint works every time. In this article, we're going to look at all the legal ways to disable the password, from standard settings to Fastboot bypassing.
However, before you act, consider that deleting your password deprives you of protection from data theft when you lose your phone. If your device has banking applications, Mi Account or corporate mail tied, it is better to use alternative unlock methods (such as Smart Lock).
We tested the instructions on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+, Redmi 10C and POCO X5 Pro (based on MIUI 14/15).The methods work on older versions as well, but additional steps may be required for the Redmi 5/6/7.
Method 1: Disable password through settings (if you know the current one)
The easiest method is if you remember a valid PIN, a pattern lock or a password, and it works for all Redmi models on MIUI and HyperOS.
- Open the “Settings” (cog icon on the main screen).
- Go to the Passwords and Security section → Screen locking.
- Enter the current password/PIN/pattern lock for confirmation.
- Select the No option (or Delete the password in older versions of MIUI).
- Confirm the action, it's done!
⚠️ Note: Some firmware will require you to enter a password from Mi Account to verify your identity. If you do not remember it, restore it through the official account.xiaomi.com website.

Method 2: Delete password through Smart Lock (without resetting)
Smart Lock allows you to automatically unlock your phone in “reliable” conditions, such as at home or when you connect to a trusted device, and if it’s enabled, you can bypass password entry:
- Go to Settings → Passwords and Security → Smart Lock.
- Enter the current password to access the settings.
- Add a “trusted location” (such as a home address) or a “trusted device” (headphones, smartwatches).
- Return to Screen Lock and delete the password (now the system will not require you to enter it in the “reliable” zone).
🔹 Limitation: This only works if the Smart Lock has been activated before the password is lost. Newer phones (Redmi Note 13 and later) may require Mi Account binding.
What to do if the Smart Lock is not working?
Method 3: Reset password through Mi Account (official method)
If you've linked your phone to your Xiaomi account, you can reset the lock remotely, and this method works even if you don't remember the screen password, but requires:
- 📱 Access to another device (PC, tablet, second phone).
- 🔑 Login and password from Mi Account.
- 🌐 A stable internet connection on a blocked Redmi.
Instructions:
- On another device, open i.mi.com and log in.
- Select the blocked Redmi from the list of devices.
- Press Find the device. → Unlock.
- Confirm the action via SMS or email.
- Wait for the notification on the phone – the password will be reset!
⚠️ Note: Once unlocked via Mi Account, all data on the phone will be saved, but some applications (e.g. Google Pay or banking services) may need to be re-authorized).

If you don’t remember your Mi Account password, restore it via your email or phone number. Newer models (Redmi Note 12 and later) may require confirmation via Google Account.
Method 4: Hard Reset (full reset) - last resort
If other methods fail, you can still reset hard through Recovery Mode, which removes all data from your phone, including photos, messages, and apps, and only use it if:
- 🔐 Do not remember the password and do not tie Mi Account.
- 📦 You have a backup of the data.
- 🔧 Ready to reset the phone.
Step-by-step:
- Turn off Redmi (press the power button for 10 seconds).
- Press the Power button + Volume up until the Mi logo appears.
- In the Recovery menu, select Wipe Data (manage by volume buttons, confirm by power button).
- Confirm reset (Yes).
- After restarting, set your phone as new.
📌 Important: On some models (Redmi) 9A/9C) After the reset, you may need to enter data from the Mi Account that was previously tied. If you don't remember it, the phone will turn into a brick»!

Hard Reset is the only way to get around a password without knowing the current one, but it erases all data. Use it only if other methods have failed.
Method 5: Unlocking via Fastboot (for advanced)
This method is suitable for users who are able to work with ADB and Fastboot.It allows you to reset your password without losing data, but requires:
- 🖥️ Computer with installed Xiaomi drivers.
- 🔌 USB-cable (preferably original).
- 🛠️ Knowledge of working with the command line.
Instructions:
- Turn off the phone and put it in Fastboot mode (clip Power + Volume down).
- Connect Redmi to your PC and open the command line in the folder with ADB.
- Enter the command: fastboot oem unlock (some models may require fastboot flashing unlock).
- Once you unlock the bootloader, type in: fastboot erase userdata or fastboot erase frp (for Factory Reset Protection reset).
- Reboot your phone with the command fastboot reboot.
⚠️ Warning: Unlocking the bootloader resets all data and can lead to a loss of warranty. on new models (Redmi Note 12 and later) requires a binding Mi Account to unlock.

What do you do if nothing works?
If none of these methods worked, the problem may be deeper:
- 🔧 Userdata section damaged: Reflashing through EDL Mode (for experienced users only).
- 🔒 Factory Reset Protection Activated (FRP): You need to enter the data from the Mi Account that was previously linked.
- 📱 Phone in the status of “stolen”: If Redmi is listed in the blacklist of Xiaomi, you can unlock it only through the official service.
In such cases, we recommend:
- Contact the official Xiaomi service center (a check or proof of purchase is required).
- Try alternative firmware (like LineageOS), but this will void the warranty.
- Buy a new phone if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the price of the device.
💡 Tip: Before buying a used Redmi, always check if the previous owner's Mi Account is untied. → The phone. → Device status (Mi Account Status must be Unbound).
