Why it’s important to know where Xiaomi stores your data

Xiaomi smartphones are some of the most popular devices on the market due to their combination of price, performance and functionality. But even experienced users are sometimes lost when you need to quickly find saved photos, downloaded documents or records from a voice recorder. The problem is compounded by the fact that MIUI (the Xiaomi brand shell) distributes files across multiple folders, and some data is automatically synchronized with the Mi Cloud.

In this article, we’ll look at all the possible storage locations for personal files on Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices, from standard internal memory folders to hidden system directories, how to find media files, instant messenger documents, backups, and even remote application data, and how to avoid file loss when you reset or replace your device.

Important: instructions are relevant for all modern models (2018-2026), including Xiaomi 13/14 series, Redmi Note 12/13, POCO F5/X5 and Pad 6 tablets. For older devices (for example, Mi A1 or Redmi 4X) there may be nuances – we will mention them too.

1. Standard folders of internal memory: where is what

By default, all personal files are stored in the device's internal memory in /storage/emulated/0/ (also known as /sdcard/). This is a virtual partition accessible without root rights.

• 📷 DCIM — It stores all photos and videos taken on the main or front camera. Embedded folders: Camera - shots and videos from the standard Camera application; Screenshots - screenshots (unless you changed the way you saved); 100ANDRO or 100MI_XX — files transferred from other devices to Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Direct.
• 📄 Documents – documents downloaded from a browser or created in office applications (for example, WPS Office or Google Docs).
• 🎵 Music and Ringtones – audio files, including alarm clock tunes and notifications.
• 🎬 Movies and Video – videos downloaded from the Internet or moved from a PC.
• 📥 Download – everything you downloaded through your browser, messengers or Mi Browser.
• 🔄 MIUI — System shell files, including: Backup – backups of settings and data; Extra – temporary files and cache; Wallpaper – desktop wallpaper.

An important nuance: if you connect your smartphone to your PC via USB, only the DCIM, Pictures and Download folders are displayed by default. To see all directories, click on the option of File Transfer (MTP) in the notification curtain and select File Transfer (FTP) or use MIUI Explorer on the device itself.

2. Application folders: where messengers and social networks store data

Many apps create their own directories in internal memory, and it's not always easy to find them, like photos from WhatsApp or Telegram don't show up in the gallery by default -- you have to search manually.

Critical information: files in /Android/data/ folder are deleted when you uninstall the app. If you delete WhatsApp or Telegram and then re-installe them, all media from the chats will disappear, even if they were in the gallery. To avoid this, regularly copy important data to DCIM or on your PC.

Tip: If you don’t see the Android folder when connecting to your PC, turn on the hidden files in Windows Explorer settings or use Total Commander on Android.

To get photos from messengers to be displayed in the Xiaomi gallery, create a.nomedia folder at the root of the memory (with a dot at the beginning) and move unnecessary media files there. This will prevent the system from scanning the folder.

3. SD-Map: How Xiaomi works with external drive

If your device supports microSD (like the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ or POCO X5 Pro), you can save files directly to your memory card.

• 🔧 By default. MIUI does not offer to save files to SD — You need to manually change the settings in each application (camera, bootloader, etc.).

To check which files are stored in Mi Cloud:

1. Open your Settings → Mi Account → Mi Cloud
2. Select a section (such as Gallery or Notes).
3. Click on the cloud icon in the top right corner to see a list of synced files.

Important: If you delete a file from your device, it will also be deleted from Mi Cloud (and vice versa). To avoid this, turn on the Recycle Bin option in the cloud settings, then the deleted files will be stored for 30 days.

5. Hidden and System Files: How to Find What You Can't See

Some personal data is stored in hidden folders or system sections that are not available without special rights, for example:

• 📱 Backup copies are created in /MIUI/Backup/AllBackup/ (If you have used the Local Backup function in the settings).

• 🤖 Remote application data – after uninstallation, some programs cache /Android/obb/ (For example, games or heavy messengers).

To see the hidden files:

1. Use a root-enabled file manager (such as Root Explorer or FX File Explorer).
2. Enable the display of hidden folders in the Explorer settings (the option to Show hidden files).
3. Root rights are required to access system partitions (/data/, /system/).

⚠️ Note: Deleting or modifying files in system folders without root rights can cause malfunctions MIUI. For example, if you manually delete the folder. /MIUI/Backup/, Local backup function will stop working until settings are reset.

6. How to recover deleted files on Xiaomi

If you accidentally delete important data, don't panic, you can try to recover it.

Important: Do not save the recovered files to the same media from which they were deleted!

Check backups:

• Local backups: /MIUI/Backup/AllBackup/
• Cloud Backups: Settings → Mi Account → Mi Cloud → Backup.

If nothing worked: contact Xiaomi’s service center – they have deep memory scanning tools (but it’s a paid service, and the success guarantee is not 100%).

The faster you start recovering from deletion, the better the chances of returning files, and each new record on the device (photo, video, app installation) reduces the likelihood of successful recovery.

7 How to transfer personal files to a new Xiaomi device

When replacing a smartphone, it is important to transfer all data correctly so that nothing is lost.

1. Sync with Mi Cloud: Enable autoupload photos and videos to the cloud. Sync contacts, notes and SMS.
2. Create a local backup: Settings → About Phone → Backup and Reset → Local backup file backup saved to /MIUI/Backup/AllBackup/ – copy it to PC or external drive.
3. Move files manually: Connect both devices to your PC and copy DCIM, Download, Documents folders. Use Xiaomi Mover (an app for wireless data transfer between Xiaomi devices).

Restore on the new device:

• Sign in to the same Mi Account – data from the cloud will be downloaded automatically.
• Import a local backup through Settings → Additional → Recovery and Reset.

Or simpler: In WhatsApp settings, enable the option Visibility of Media Files (Settings → Storage and Data → Visibility of Media Files).
