Xiaomi smartwatches are not just accessories, but full-fledged gadgets that sync with your smartphone to track activity, notifications and even purchases. But what if you want to sell the watch, transfer it to another person or just change your phone? In this case, you need to properly untie the device from your current smartphone to avoid problems with authorization, data loss or locking functions.
The unbundling process may seem simple, but in practice, users encounter errors such as โthe device is already tied to another accountโ or โfailed to delete the connection.โ In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to unbundle for different models from the budget Mi Band to the flagship Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro, and also tell you how to avoid typical mistakes. If you are planning to sell a watch or just want to start with a clean slate, this guide is for you.
Why it is important to untie Xiaomi watches
Many users mistakenly think that just uninstalling Mi Fitness or Zepp Life would automatically unplug the watch, which doesnโt really work: the device remains tied to your Xiaomi account and the new owner wonโt be able to activate it. Here are the key reasons why you should do it right:
- ๐ Data security: without a waist, the new owner can access your health statistics, notifications, and even payment details (if the watch supports Mi Pay).
- ๐ฑ New phone compatibility: If you donโt untie the watch, it can conflict when you try to connect to another smartphone.
- ๐ฐ Problems in the sale: the buyer will not be able to link the watch to his account, which will cause claims and possible returns.
- โ๏ธ Failures: Incorrect uncoupling can lead to synchronization errors or complete device failure.
In addition, some models (such as the Xiaomi Watch S1 or Redmi Watch 3) have a hardware-based account binding, which means that without the correct reset, they can lock and require the previous owner to enter data, as on smartphones with Mi Account.
Method 1: Uncoupling through the official application (the simplest method)
This method is suitable for most models, including the Mi Band 5/6/7/8, Xiaomi Watch S1/S2 and Redmi Watch. You will need the original app through which the watch was originally connected.
- ๐ฑ Mi Fitness (for older models until 2021)
- ๐ฑ Zepp Life (for new devices starting with Mi Band 6)
- ๐ฑ Xiaomi Wear (for some regions, for example, Europe)
Step instructions:
- Open the app and go to the Profile โ My Devices section.
- Select your watch from the list of connected gadgets.
- Slap the icon. โ๏ธ (settings) or swipe left on the device card.
- Click Remove Device or Untie (depending on the version of the application).
- Confirm the action in the pop-up window.
If there is no Delete Device button, try:
- ๐ Update the app to the latest version in Google Play or App Store.
- ๐ถ Check your internet connection โ without it, the junction may not work.
- ๐ Make sure the watch is at least 20% charged โ some models block changes when charged at low charge.
โ๏ธ Preparation for uncoupling through the annex
Once the watch is successfully uncoupled, it will automatically reset to factory settings. If it does not, manually reset (more on this in the next section).
๐ก
If you sell a watch, take a screenshot of the screen with the confirmation of the detachment - this will save you from the claims of the buyer.
Method 2: Hardware reset (if you don't have access to a phone or app)
If you don't have access to the original phone or app (like buying a used watch that you didn't untidy), you'll have to do a hard reset, which works for all models, but can vary in the combination of buttons.
For most Xiaomi smartwatches, the procedure looks like this:
- Charge the watch by at least 50% โ a reset at low charge can lead to errors.
- Disconnect them from your phone (forget the device in Bluetooth settings).
- Find a physical button on the case (usually one, located on the side).
- Hold it for 10-15 seconds until the Mi logo or Reset appears on the screen.
- Release the button and wait for the reboot (can take up to 2 minutes).
For models without physical buttons (e.g. Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro or Mi Band 7 Pro):
- Go to the clock menu: swipe up or click on the screen.
- Find the Settings section โ System โ Resetting settings.
- Confirm the action (it may be necessary to enter) PIN-code, if it has been installed).
| Model clock | Reset combination | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mi Band 3/4/5 | Press the touch button for 10 seconds | The screen should flash 3 times. |
| Mi Band 6/7/8 | Press and hold the screen for 15 seconds on the menu | Factory Reset will be signed |
| Xiaomi Watch S1/S2 | Hold the side button for 20 seconds. | Vibration + Mi logo |
| Redmi Watch 2/3 | Menu โ Settings โ Reset | Requires confirmation on the phone |
Important: After a hardware reset, the Xiaomi Watch S1 Pro and Watch 2 Pro may require you to enter data from your previous Mi Account if they were linked to it, in which case additional unlocking will be required (see the error section).
Method 3: Unlocking through the web version of Mi Account (if the watch is not reset)
If standard methods donโt work (e.g., the watch is locked or the app is making an error), you can try untie them via the web version of your Xiaomi account, which is suitable for devices tied to Mi Account, but doesnโt always work for models using Zepp OS.
Instructions:
- Go to account.xiaomi.com and log in to the same account that your watch is linked to.
- In the menu, select Devices โ Smart devices.
- Find your watch on the list (it can be displayed as Mi Band X or Watch Device).
- Press three points. โฎ Next to the device and select Delete.
- Confirm the action via SMS or email (if two-factor authentication is enabled).
If the watch is not on the list, try:
- ๐ Fresh up the page or log in to your account via another browser.
- ๐ง Check if you are using the same account (sometimes users confuse the primary and backup Mi Accounts).
- ๐ Wait 10-15 minutes โ sometimes the data is synchronized with the delay.
What if the Mi Account website doesnโt show a watch?
After removal through the web interface, be sure to reset the clock (see Method 2), otherwise they may remain in a โsuspendedโ state.
Method 4: Uncoupling through ADB (for advanced users)
This method is suitable if the watch is blocked by the Xiaomi account (for example, after resetting the Xiaomi Watch S1, you are asked to enter the username / password of the previous owner).
- ๐ฑ Android smartphone with root rights or unlocked bootloader.
- ๐ป Computer with installed ADB and Fastboot.
- ๐ USB-cable to connect the clock (for some models).
Warning: This method is risky and can cause the clock to break, and only use it if other methods have failed.
๐ก
ADB-This method is suitable only for Android Wear-based watches (e.g. Xiaomi Watch). S1/S2). It doesn't work for the Mi Band!
Step-by-step:
- Connect the watch to your phone via Bluetooth and turn on Developer Mode (if there is such a item in the settings).
- On your computer, open the command line and type: Adb devices Make sure the device is defined.
- Follow the command to reset your account: adb shell pm clear com.xiaomi.account
- Reboot the watch: Adb shell reboot
If the watch is not determined via ADB, try connecting it via USB (for models with a connector) and use Fastboot:
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot rebootโ ๏ธ Warning: After this procedure, the watch may lose some of its features (e.g. Mi Pay or sync with Zepp Life) and may turn the device into a brick if the process is interrupted.
Method 5: Calling for Xiaomi Support (If Nothing Works)
If all of these methods fail (e.g., a watch requires data from the previous owner and you canโt contact him), the last option is official Xiaomi support.
- Gather proof of ownership: ๐ Check or invoice (if you bought new ones). ๐ฆ Photo of the box with the serial number (it must match the number in the settings of the clock). ๐ฑ Screenshot of the error (if the clock is locked).
- For Russia: mi.com/ru/support
- For other regions: select your country at mi.com/global/support
- Select the category Wearables โ Smartwatches and describe the problem.
- Attach the evidence collected and submit a request.
The review period is 3 to 7 days, and in most cases, support sends out an unlock instruction or manually resets the binding, and if the watch is stolen, police protocol may be required.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Don't buy a used Xiaomi watch without the possibility of a reset! Even if the seller assures you that "everything works", after the reboot the device may lock.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
When setting the clock, users often face problems, and here are the most common ones and how to solve them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The device is already linked to another account. | The watch was not untied by the previous owner. | Make a hardware reset (Method 2) or contact in support |
| "Failed to remove the device in Zepp Life" | Failure of synchronization with the server | Check the internet, restart the app or use the web version of Mi Account |
| Watches ask for login / password after reset | Hardware binding to Mi Account (relevant to Watch S1/S2) | Use ADB (Method 4) or seek support with evidence |
| The clock is not turned on after resetting | The process is interrupted or the battery is discharged | Put on charging for 30+ minutes, then repeat the reset. |
A few more tips to avoid problems:
- ๐ Always untie your watch through the app first, and then reset it.
- ๐ Write down or photograph the serial number of the watch (located in settings or on the box).
- ๐ Do not reset your watch with a charge of less than 20% โ this can cause firmware damage.
- ๐ If you buy a watch from another region (e.g., the global version in China), make sure it supports your language and services (e.g., Mi Pay may not work).
