The sound of keys when typing on Xiaomi smartphones can be annoying β especially if you type at night or in a quiet room. Fortunately, the manufacturer has provided several ways to turn off these beeps. In this article, we will examine all available methods, from standard MIUI settings to hidden developer settings.
The problem is relevant for all Redmi, POCO and Xiaomi models based on Android 11-14 with the MIUI 12-14 shell. Even if you have an older version of the firmware, most of the methods will work.
Important: Some methods require administrator rights or developer mode activation, and we will mark these cases separately so that you can choose the easiest option.
1. Disabling the sound in the settings of the MIUI keyboard
The most obvious way is to use standard system keyboard settings, which works on all Xiaomi smartphones without any additional manipulation.
Go to Settings β Additional Settings β Language and Input β Current Keyboard (usually Xiaomi or Gboard if you have installed it).
- π Find the "Sound" or "Key Sound" section"
- π Switch the slider "Push Sound" to the "Off" position."
- π If necessary, turn off the βVibrationβ and βSpace Soundβ as well"
If you have Gboard installed, the path is a little different: Gboard settings β Settings β Sound when pressed. You can turn off both sound and vibration.
2. Global shutdown of system sounds
If the keyboard's sound isn't switched off by settings, try turning off all system sounds, a radical but effective method that removes not only the keyboard's sounds, but also notifications, lock screens and other actions.
For this:
- Open the Settings. β Sound and vibration
- Select "Sound Mode" and set "No Sound" or "Vibration"
- Go back and turn off "Push Sound" and "Block Sound"
The downside is that you lose all the audible notifications. If you have to leave the sound for calls only, use the Do Not Disturb profile with exceptions.

To quickly switch between sound modes, add the appropriate widget to the Quick Settings panel (swipe down from the top edge of the screen).
3.Use of the "Do Not Disturb" mode
Do Not Disturb allows you to flexibly adjust audible alerts, and you can use it to turn off the keyboard sound while still keeping the notifications of calls and messages.
How to set up:
- π Go to Settings. β Sound and vibration β Don't disturb.
- π§ Select "Schedule" or "Rules"
- π΅ Create a new rule with the option "Disable system sounds"
- β° Set an action time (for example, from 22:00 to 8:00)
In this mode, the keyboard sound will be turned off, but important notifications (calls, alarms) will remain active, which is convenient if you want silence only at a certain time.
What if "Do Not Disturb" doesn't turn off the keyboard sound?
4. Disable sounds through developer settings
If the standard methods don't work, you can use the hidden parameters, and you need to activate the developer mode:
- Go to Settings. β The phone.
- Press 7 times on the item "Version" MIUI"
- Return to the main settings menu β a new section βFor developersβ will appear
Now:
- π οΈ Open the Settings. β For developers
- π Find the option βDisable touch soundsβ (or βDisable touch sounds")
- π Activate it and restart the phone.
Some MIUI firmware doesn't have this option, so instead it might be "Disable system sounds" or "Disable system sounds." If you don't find anything, try the following method.
5. Delete system sound files (for advanced)
This is only suitable for root-right users, which means removing the audio files that play keys, and without root, access to the system folders will be limited.
Instructions:
- Install a file manager with root support (such as Root Explorer)
- Go to /system/media/audio/ui/
- Find files with KeypressStandard.ogg, KeypressSpacebar.ogg, KeypressDelete.ogg
- Rename them by adding the.bak extension (e.g. KeypressStandard.ogg.bak)
- Reboot the phone.
β οΈ Note: Do not delete files completely - renaming will allow you to restore them if something goes wrong.

6. Alternative keyboards without sound
If nothing works, the easiest way to install a third-party keyboard is to turn off the sounds by default.
| keyboard | Features | Download link |
|---|---|---|
| Gboard | Flexible sound settings, gesture support | Google Play |
| SwiftKey | Lack of default sounds, AI predictions | Google Play |
| Fleksy | Minimalist design, no sounds | Google Play |
After installing the new keyboard:
- Activate it in Settings β Language and input β Current keyboard
- Open the keyboard settings and turn off the sounds (if any)
- Remove or disable the standard MIUI keyboard so it doesnβt interfere
β οΈ Note: Some keyboards (like SwiftKey) may collect your typing data to improve predictions.
Comparison of methods: which one to choose?
To make it easier for you to decide, we have collected the advantages and disadvantages of each method:
| Method | Pluses | Cons | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard settings | Quick, no rights required. | It doesnβt always work on custom firmware. | β |
| Do not disturb mode. | Keeps important notifications | It's only on schedule. | ββ |
| Developer mode | Turns off all system sounds. | Requires activation of hidden settings | βββ |
| Deletion of sound files | A radical solution | Need root rights, risk of error | ββββ |
| third-party keyboard | Many additional functions | Takes up space, can collect data | β |
For most users, the best solution would be to turn off the sound in the keyboard settings (method 1) or install Gboard (method 6).If the sound returns after a reboot, try a combination of method 1 and method 4 (developer mode).

The most reliable way is to use a third-party keyboard (like Gboard) with the sounds turned off, and this is guaranteed to work on any version of MIUI.
