Are you tired of the same call when you write or call a friend, colleague or relative? Customized contact melodies on Xiaomi are an easy way to personalize your phone and immediately understand who is trying to contact you without looking at the screen. In this article, we will explore all the ways to assign a unique ringtone to any subscriber, from standard MIUI features to bypassing system restrictions.
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones are powered by the MIUI branded shell, which is regularly updated, which means that the interface and settings may vary slightly depending on the firmware version (e.g. MIUI 12 vs MIUI 14). We took these nuances into account and prepared a universal guideline that is relevant for most models, from the budget Redmi Note 10 to the flagship Xiaomi 13 Ultra.
If you’ve tried to change the melody for a contact before, but didn’t find it on the menu, don’t be quick to blame the manufacturer, because Xiaomi hides some settings behind additional gestures or requires file preparation.
Why Xiaomi doesn’t have a Call Melody option for contact?
Many users find that the contact card simply does not have a point to change the ringtone, the reason for this lies in the features of MIUI:
- 📱 Limitations MIUI: In some firmware versions (especially on budget models), the individual tunes feature is disabled by default.
- 🔄 Regional settings: On smartphones for the Chinese market (China) ROM) Some functions may be missing or may work differently than in global versions (Global) ROM).
- 🎵 Audio file format: MIUI It doesn't support all formats of tunes, like files in.m4a.flac may not appear in the list of available ringtones.
- 📂 Location of files: If you download a tune to the Download folder, the system will not see it. The files must be in special directories (Ringtones, Notifications).
Before you get to the setup, check your firmware version. Go to Settings → About Phone → MIUI Version. If you have MIUI 12.5 or newer, all of the methods described below should work. Older versions (such as MIUI 11) may need to be updated or used bypasses.
Method 1: Standard Melody Purpose Through Contact (MIUI 13/14)
If your smartphone is running the current firmware version, the easiest way to do this is to use the built-in contact settings. Here's a step-by-step guide:
- Open the Contacts app (an icon with a human silhouette).
- Find the right contact and tap it to open the card.
- In the upper right corner, press three dots (⋮) and select "Edit».
- Scroll down to the Call Melody (or Rington) block. If this item is not available, proceed to Method 2.
- Slip on the current tune (usually it’s the default) and select a new ringtone from the list.
- Save the changes by clicking “Ready” or “Save”.
If you don't have the right tune on the list, you can add your own.
- 🎼 Download an audio file (for example, in format.mp3 Or.ogg) and put it in the Internal Storage folder. → Ringtones.
- 🔄 Reboot your phone (sometimes) MIUI Does not update the ringtones list without rebooting).
- 🔊 Return to Contact Editing – Your File Should Appear in the List.
☑️ Preparation of the ringtone file
⚠️ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi) 9A or POCO M3) Ringtones folder may not be available. Create it manually through any file manager (e.g., Google Files or Mi File Manager»).
Method 2: Assigning a melody through “Sound Settings” (for older versions of MIUI)
If the contact card doesn't have a ringtone change option, try an alternative route through system settings, which works on MIUI 11-12.5 and some custom firmware.
- Open the phone's "Settings."
- Go to the section “Sound and vibration” (or “Sound”).
- Slip on the item "Melody of the call" (not to be confused with "Alarm Melody"!).
- At the top of the screen, you'll see "Default Melody" below, which may be a list of contacts with current ringtones (if the feature is supported).
- Click on “Add” or “Appoint” and then select the contact from the list.
- Specify the melody from the suggested ones or add your own (as described in Method 1).
If you can't assign a tune to a specific contact in this menu, your version of MIUI is heavily stripped down, and third-party method 3 will help.
| MIUI version | Support for individual melodies | Where to look for settings |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 14 | Yes. | Editing the contact → “Melody of the call” |
| MIUI 12.5–13 | Yes (on most models) | Settings → Sound → Call melody → Assign contact |
| MIUI 11 and older | Partially (depending on model) | Needs third-party software or workarounds |
| China ROM | Limited. | You need to change the region or firmware to Global |
Method 3: Use third-party applications (if standard methods don't work)
If your Xiaomi persists in not assigning a tune to contact, third-party utilities will come to the rescue, and we tested several apps and selected the most reliable ones:
- 🎶 Zedge is a popular app with a huge library of ringtones and notifications, which allows you to assign contact melodies without restrictions. MIUI.
- 🔊 Ringtone Maker is a tool for cropping audio files and assigning them to specific contacts.mp3,.wav,.ogg.
- 📱 Contact Ringtones is a customized application for managing individual ringtones. MIUI 11.
Instructions for Zedge:
- Install Zedge from Google Play.
- Open the app and find your favorite ringtone (or download yours through My Stuff).
- Slip the tune and select "Set as" → "Contact ringtone".
- Select a contact from the list and confirm the appointment.
Important: Some applications (like Contact Ringtones) require permission to access contacts and storage. Provide them, otherwise the feature will not work. Also check if the Security in MIUI blocks third-party utilities (Settings → Apps → Permissions).
💡
If you don't play a tune through a third-party app after you assign it, try rebooting your phone. Sometimes MIUI caches the old audio settings.
Method 4: Manually create folders and files (for advanced users)
If you prefer not to install additional programs, you can manually prepare files and folders so that MIUI can see them as system ringtones, a method that requires accuracy, but works on 100% of devices.
You'll need:
- 📁 File Manager with access to root folders (e.g., “Mi File Manager” or “Solid Explorer»).
- 🎵 Audio file format.mp3,.ogg.m4a (size).
- 📝 Text editor (e.g., “QuickEdit”) for creating service files.
Step-by-step:
- Connect your phone to your PC or use the file manager on your device.
- Go to the root folder of internal memory (Internal Storage).
- Create folders (if not): media/audio/ringtones media/audio/notifications media/audio/alarms
- Place your audio file in the ringtones folder (for ringtones) or notifications (for notifications).
- Create an empty file in each folder called.nomedia (no extension!) to prevent the melodies from being displayed in the gallery.
- Reboot the phone.
- Open the contact and assign a new tune (now it should appear in the list).
⚠️ Attention: If you are using SD-file-storage card, folder media/audio It must be in the internal memory. MIUI Does not read ringtones from external drives.
Why isn't the melody assignment working?
Problem Solving: Why is the melody not played?
Even if you've assigned the ringtone correctly, sometimes it doesn't play when you call, let's look at the typical causes and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The melody does not play, the standard signal is triggered. | The file is corrupted or not maintained | Check the file on another device or convert to MP3 |
| The melody plays, but it breaks. | The file is too long (more than 30 seconds) | Cut the file to 20 to 30 seconds with Ringtone Maker |
| The melody works, but very quietly. | Low volume in MIUI settings | Check the settings → Sound → Media volume |
| The melody is reset after the update | Resetting MIUI settings after update | Reassign the melody manually or roll back the update |
If the problem persists, try the following:
- Remove the Contacts cache (Settings → Applications → Application Management → Contacts → Clear cache).
- Check if the Do Not Disturb mode is activated for this contact.
- Update your firmware to the latest version of MIUI (sometimes bugs are fixed in new builds).
💡
If neither method worked, the cause could be custom firmware or modified MIUI, in which case only the firmware re-flashing to the official version will help.

- Alarms: media/audio/alarms
