Why not put a melody on a call on Xiaomi: all the reasons and ways to fix

You downloaded your favorite song, you try to put it on a call to Xiaomi, but the system stubbornly ignores your actions? Or after the MIUI update, all the ringtones are gone and standard tunes are not used? MIUI has a strict control over the audio file formats that can be used as ringtones, so if your tune doesn't pass the test, the system will simply ignore it without showing an error.

• ⏱️ Duration: optimally up to 30 seconds. Files longer than 1 minute may or may not be clipped.
• 📏 File size: no more than 5 MB. Heavy files cause freezes when selecting.
• 🔊 Bitrate: 128-192 kbit/s recommended. High bitrate (320)+ kbit/s) leads to decoding errors.

How do you check your file? Use free online services like Audio-Tool or Google Play's MediaInfo app, and if the settings don't fit, convert the file through Audacity or Online-Convert.

⚠️ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro) POCO X3 Pro files.m4a with a bitrate above 160 kbit / s, cause the Settings application to fail.mp3.

If you downloaded a tune from the Internet, first check it for viruses through VirusTotal – some files may contain malicious code that blocks the installation.

2.The melody is in the wrong folder.

MIUI only looks for ringtones in certain system folders, and if your file is in Downloads or on a memory card in a random directory, the system won't see it.

How to transfer the file to the correct folder:

1. Connect your phone to your PC or use a file manager (such as Mi File Manager).
2. Create a Ringtones folder at the root of your internal memory if you don’t have one.
3. Copy your audio file there.
4. Reboot your phone and it will update your media database.

3. MIUI restrictions on user ringtones

Since MIUI 12, Xiaomi has tightened its security policy by blocking the installation of ringtones from unverified sources.

3. Install a file manager with permissions such as FX File Explorer or Solid Explorer (they can bypass some of the limitations of MIUI).

1. Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
2. Find the settings (icon with a gear).
3. Select Permissions → Resetting permits.
4. Reboot the phone.

4. Media scanner failure (file not displayed in list)

A media scanner is a system process that indexes all the audio files on the device. If it doesn't work properly, your tune won't show up in the ringtones list, even if it's in the right folder.

5. Conflict with sound customization applications

Many users install third-party ringtone customization apps, such as Zedge, Ringtone Maker or MP3 Cutter, which often conflict with MIUI by intercepting audio profile management.

6. Mistakes after MIUI update

MIUI updates often break the sound profiles.
