The audio typing experience on Xiaomiβs smartphone not only adds tactile recoil, but also helps avoid typos β especially on touch keyboards. However, once MIUI is updated or resets, this feature often turns off automatically. In this article, weβll look at all the possible ways to bring back the familiar keyboard sound, including hidden settings and solutions for third-party keyboards.
Complicating the problem is that MIUI interfaces change regularly: versions 14 and 15 have different paths to keyboard audio settings. We tested instructions on Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T and other devices from 2022-2026. If your phone is older, check the firmware relevance in Settings β About Phone β MIUI version.
1. Standard method: settings of the system keyboard Xiaomi
Most Xiaomi smartphones use the Mi Keyboard (formerly Xiaomi Keyboard) to enable the sound of the taps:
- Open any application to enter text (such as Notes or Messages).
- Tap the input field to make the keyboard appear.
- Click on the gear icon (βοΈ) in the top row of the keyboard - this will cause the settings menu.
- Select Sound when pressed (or Sound Effects in older versions).
- Move the slider to the position on.
If you don't click Sound on the menu, you have another default keyboard on your device (like Gboard).

2. Customize the sound in Gboard (Google Keyboard)
Gboard is a popular alternative to Xiaomi's standard keyboard, to include the tap sound:
- Open Phone Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find Gboard in the list and tap it.
- Select Keyboard Settings β Themes, Sound and Vibration.
- Activate the Sound option when you press the keys.
Gboard can also set the vibration and sound of the space key separately. If the sound doesn't appear, check:
- π Multimedia volume (adjusted by volume buttons when playing music).
- π΅ Vibration mode or Do not disturb in the curtain of notifications.
- π Disabled system sounds in Settings β Sound and vibration β Other sounds.
3. Hidden MIUI settings: key sound via "Special features"
If the keyboard sound is not enabled through the standard settings, the problem may be the system constraints. MIUI 14/15 has a hidden setting that blocks the interface sounds:
- Go to Settings β Special Opportunities β Hearing Improvement.
- Scroll down and find Monozvouk (for headphones).
- Make sure it is turned off, otherwise the keyboard sounds may not play correctly.
Also check Settings β Sound and Vibration β System Sounds. Press Sounds should be activated here (not to be confused with Locking Sounds!).
Why does the sound of the keyboard disappear after the update?
4.Sound problems: what to do if nothing works
If the keyboard sound never came up, the reasons may be deeper:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| It's sounding, but it's very quiet. | Limiting the volume of system sounds | In Settings β Sound turn off Safe Volume |
| The sound only works in headphones. | Phone speaker damaged | Check the speaker via ##36446337## (Equipment Test) |
| The sound disappears after the reboot | Keyboard cache failure | Clear the cache in Settings β Applications β Keyboard β Storage |
| No "Push Sound" item. | Modified firmware installed | Update MIUI through Settings β System Update |
β οΈ Note: On some models POCO (for example, POCO F4) Keyboard sound conflicts with Game Turbo feature. If you play games, temporarily turn off Game Turbo in the notification curtain.
5. Alternative keyboards with sound
If standard solutions didnβt help, consider third-party keyboards with advanced audio settings:
- πΉ SwiftKey β allows you to download your own pressing sounds (format.mp3).
- π Chroom β keyboard with adjustable volume of sounds and vibrations.
- πΆ Fleksy β supports themes with built-in sound packages.
To install an alternative keyboard:
- Download the app from Google Play.
- Go to Settings β System β Language and input β Current keyboard.
- Select a new keyboard and follow the instructions on the screen.
π‘
If you type frequently at night, you can turn on Quiet Key mode in Gboard and SwiftKey β the sound will only play when you hold the keys.
6. Reset keyboard settings to factory
If all methods have been tried, but the sound has not appeared, reset the keyboard settings:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find your keyboard (Mi Keyboard or Gboard) and tap it.
- Select Warehouse. β Clear the data.
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
β οΈ Warning: Clearing the keyboard data will remove all saved words from the dictionary and personal settings. Before reset, sync your data with your Google account (for Gboard) or Xiaomi (for Mi Keyboard) before resetting).
Once the keyboard is restarted, it will return to factory settings, and the tap sound should start to work, and if the problem persists, it could indicate a hardware fault in the speaker or a MIUI system failure requiring flashing.

On Xiaomi models with stereo speakers (such as the Xiaomi 13 Pro), the keyboard sound can only be played through the top speaker. This is normal behavior, not a breakdown.
