Why you need headphone animation and where to look for it
Visual effects when you connect your headphones are one of those MIUI and HyperOS βchipsβ that make interaction with your Xiaomi device more lively. When you insert wired headphones into a 3.5mm connector or plug in a Bluetooth headset, stylish animations can appear on the screen, from minimalist waves to thematic pictures (such as musical notes or abstract shapes), this feature not only graces the interface, but also gives visual feedback β you immediately see that the device recognizes the headphones.
However, not all users know that animations can be customized or enabled if they are disabled by default. Depending on the firmware version (MIUI 12/13/14 or HyperOS) and the smartphone model (Redmi Note 12, Xiaomi 13, POCO F5, etc.), the path to settings may differ. In this article, we will discuss all possible activation methods, including hidden chips for older versions of MIUI.
It's important to understand that headphone animation is part of the system themes. If you use a standard theme, the effects will be minimalist. But when you install custom themes (like Theme β Online), the animation can change dramatically, right down to full screen screen screensavers, which we'll talk about later.
Method 1: Enable via Sound Settings (MIUI 13/14 and HyperOS)
The most obvious and versatile method is activation via the audio settings menu, which works on most modern Xiaomi devices, including Redmi and POCO based on MIUI 13/14 or HyperOS. Here is a step-by-step instruction:
- Open the Settings app (the gear icon on the home screen).
- Go to the section Sound and vibration.
- Scroll down to the Sound Effects block and select Headphone Animation (or Visual Effects when connected - the name may differ).
- Activate the switch to the position on..
- If necessary, select the animation style from the available options (if the option is supported by your firmware).
If headphone animation is not on the menu, then your smartphone model does not support this feature at the firmware level, in which case try the alternative methods described below.
Make sure the headphones are connected to the smartphone
Update the firmware to the latest version
Check if the power saving mode is set (it can block animations)
Restart the device if the changes do not apply-->
Note: On some devices (e.g. Xiaomi 12T or Redmi Note 11 Pro+), the animations turn on automatically when you first connect your headphones. If the effects of Suddenly are gone, try resetting the audio settings: Settings β Sound β Reset the audio settings.
Method 2: Activation through βThemesβ (Castom Animations)
If you don't like standard animation or you don't like it in the settings, you can set a theme with unique effects. MIUI Themes include their own styles for connecting headphones β from anime characters to dynamic ones 3D-wavelength.
How to do this:
- π¨ Open the Themes app (icon with brush).
- π Go to the Online tab and search for βheadphone animationβ or βmusic animationΒ».
- π₯ Choose your favorite theme and click Apply. Some themes require payment (10β50) MI-coinage).
- π After applying the theme, restart your smartphone so that the changes take effect.
Important: Some topics may conflict with system settings, causing lags or animation failures. If the headphones are no longer defined after installing the theme, return the standard design.

Method 3: Hidden settings for older versions of MIUI (up to 12.5)
On devices with MIUI 12 and older (e.g. Redmi Note 9, Xiaomi Mi 10), headphone animation can be hidden in the feature lab or require activation via ADB. If there is no desired item in the audio menu, try these methods:
Method A: MIUI Laboratory
- Open the Settings. β The phone.
- Tap 7 times on the MIUI version to turn on the developer mode.
- Return to the main settings menu and select Additional β Functions Lab.
- Find the option Animate device connection and activate it.
Method B: ADB command (for advanced users)
If the lab doesn't work, you can turn on the animation through ADB.
- Install. ADB-PC drivers.
- Connect your smartphone to your computer and allow debugging over USB (Settings β Developers β Debugging over USB).
- Open the command line and type: adb shell settings put global headset_connection_animation 1
- Reset the device.
To disable animation, replace the command with 1 to 0.

Method 4: Using Third-Party Applications
If the system methods didn't work, you can install a third-party app to simulate animation, like Headset Plug Animation or Music Visualizer from Google Play, which creates surface effects when you plug in your headphones, but has limitations:
- β οΈ Require permission to display over other windows (Settings) β Special facilities β Appendices on top of others).
- β οΈ Can discharge the battery faster due to constant operation in the background.
- β οΈ Not all apps support HyperOS (check reviews before installing).
Example of popular applications:
| Name of name | Functions | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Headset Plug Animation | Castom animations, support for themes | Advertising, premium fees |
| Music Visualizer | Sound visualizer + connection animation | Complex settings, lags on weak devices |
| Edge Lighting | Illumination of the edges of the screen when connected | It doesnβt work on all Xiaomi models. |
π‘
Before installing third-party apps, check their compatibility with your smartphone model. For example, Edge Lighting officially supports only Samsung, but on some Xiaomi works through workarounds.
Why headphone animation may not work
If you have enabled all settings but the animation never appears, the reasons may be as follows:
- π Power Saving Mode: Disables visuals to save charge. check in Settings β Battery β Energy saving regime.
- π± Outdated firmware: On MIUI 11 and below headphone animation is often missing.Update via Settings β Updating the system.
- π§ Headphone problems: If the device does not recognize the headset (for example, due to a damaged 3.5 mm connector), the animation will not work.
- π οΈ System File Failure: Try resetting the sound settings or resetting to factory settings (pre-make a backup!).
The animation may also not be displayed if:
- You use wireless headphones without support MIUI-effects (e.g. first generation AirDots).
- Dark mode with animation restriction is enabled (check Settings β Screen β Dark Mode β Additional).
- Installed custom firmware (for example, LineageOS), which does not have branded chips Xiaomi.
π‘
If the animation worked before, but Suddenly is gone, check for system updates first. Often bugs are fixed in newer versions of MIUI/HyperOS.
How to make headphone animation unique
Standard effects are quick to bite, but they can be personalized. Here are a few ways:
- Install live wallpapers that react to the headphones. For example, Google Play has a Kappboom or WallpapersCraft wallpaper that changes when you play music.
- Use widgets. The Music Player widget (like Poweramp or Musicolet) can show animations on the home screen when you plug in the headset.
- Configure Always-On Display. On AMOLED-screen devices (such as Xiaomi 13 Ultra), you can turn on the display of headphone status on the locked screen: Settings β Always-On Display and lock β AOD settings β Device status.
For advanced users, there's another option: create your own animations through apps like Tasker or MacroDroid, for example, you can set up automatic playback of the GIF when you plug in your headphones.
- Install Tasker and AutoNotification plugin.
- Create a task with a trigger State β Audio β Headphones are connected.
- Add the action Display β Show the image and indicate the path to your GIF.
The disadvantage of this method is increased battery consumption and possible lags.
