Quiet notifications on Xiaomi are one of the most common problems among smartphone owners of this brand. Even at maximum volume, signals about incoming messages, calls or alarms can be barely audible, especially in noisy rooms. The reasons lie in both the features of the MIUI firmware and the hardware limitations of speakers. In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to amplify sound from basic settings to hidden functions of the engineering menu and third-party utilities.
Itβs important to understand that Xiaomi artificially limits the volume of notifications on some models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 or POCO X3) due to European regulations on hearing protection. However, these restrictions can be circumvented by legal methods. We tested all of the solutions described below on devices with MIUI 12-14 and Android 11-14 β most of them work universally, but for some, root rights will be required.
If you've tried to turn up the volume through the standard audio menu, but the result is not satisfied, don't rush to reset the settings. In this article, you will find ways that are not written about in the official documentation, including changing the parameters through ADB and modifying system files.
1. Basic volume settings in MIUI
Start by checking for obvious parameters β often users miss key options in the audio menu. In MIUI, the volume of notifications is regulated separately from media and calls, so even if the music is playing loud, message signals can remain quiet.
Open Settings β Sound and vibration. Here you're interested in three sliders:
- π Media Volume β Does Not Affect Notifications, but Itβs Worth Checking.
- π Call volume β indirectly affects incoming call signals.
- π© Volume of notifications is the main parameter that should be set to the maximum.
Note the option Do Not Disturb in the same menu. If it is activated (even in "Alarm Only" mode), the notifications will be muted. Also check the section Advanced Settings β Vibration at notifications - sometimes vibration distracts from the sound signal, and users mistakenly think that the volume is low.
β οΈ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Mi 11 or Redmi) K40) The notification volume slider can reset after rebooting. This is a firmware bug, the solution is described in the section on resetting settings.
2. Change of sound scheme and melody of notifications
The standard notification sounds in MIUI are often quieter than third-party tunes due to compression of audio files.
- Go to Settings β Sound and vibration β Notifications sound.
- Choose one of the suggested tunes (e.g. Ring Ring or Reflection are usually louder than standard ones).
- To download your own sound, click Add and select a file in.mp3 or.ogg format from the deviceβs memory.
The best sounds are those with a 44.1 kHz and a bitrate of 192-320 kbps. Avoid low-quality files (such as those recorded via a microphone) that will sound muted even at maximum volume.
- π΅ Zedge β Free tunes with pre-listening.
- π Notification Sounds β Specialized Notification Sounds.
If the volume has not changed after the melody has been replaced, the problem may be in sound normalization, a function that equalizes the volume of all signals, which can be turned off through the engineering menu (see section 4).
π‘
Before downloading third-party tunes, check them on another device β some files may sound quiet initially.
3. Volume setting for individual applications
MIUI allows you to assign individual audio profiles to each application, which is useful if you want WhatsApp or Telegram signals to be louder than system notifications.
Instructions:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select the application you want (for example, Viber).
- Go to the Notifications section.
- Activate the Sound switch and select a loud melody.
- Turn on the option to Cover Do Not Disturb mode (if available).
For Android 12+, the path is a little different: Settings β Notifications β App notification settings. Here you can set notification priority β setting it to Maximum, you increase the chances of hearing the signal.
| Annex | Max. Volume in MIUI. | Recommended melody |
|---|---|---|
| 75% | Message Tone 5 (built-in) | |
| Telegram | 80% | Popcorn (download separately) |
| Gmail | 60% | Ring Ring Ring |
| Text | 90% | Reflection |
β οΈ Attention: On some firmware MIUI customized application audio settings are reset after the system update. To avoid this, back up the settings through Settings. β Additionally. β Backup and reset.
4. Engineering menu: hidden parameters of sound
If standard methods don't work, you should check the Engineer Mode, where you can turn off the manufacturer's volume limits. Careful: the wrong changes can cause failures!
How to open the engineering menu:
- Type the code on your phone keyboard: ##4636##.
- Choose Hardware Testing β Audio.
- In the Type section, specify Media or Ring.
- In the Value field, enter a number from 0 to 100 (usually 70-80 by default).
- Press Set and restart the device.
For a deeper setup, use the MTK Engineer Mode (for MediaTek processors) or Qualcomm Engineer Mode (for Snapdragon).
- π Turn off Audio Normalization (sound normalization).
- πΆ Increase Max Volume for speakers.
- π§ Change Speaker Gain (Dynamics Enhancement).
On Xiaomi models with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1/2 processor (such as the Xiaomi 12 Pro or Redmi K50), changing the Speaker Gain setting above 6 dB can cause audio distortions.
What to do if the engineering menu does not open?
5.Use of ADB to Remove Volume Limits
If the engineering menu doesnβt work, try changing system settings through the Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which works on all Xiaomi devices without root rights, but requires a connection to a computer.
Step-by-step:
- Enable USB Debugging in Settings β About Phone β MIUI version (click 7 times on the line with the version, then go back to Additional β For Developers).
- Connect the phone to the PC and confirm the debugging permission.
- Open the command line (Windows) or the terminal (Mac/Linux) and type:
adb shell settings put system volume_music_speaker_scale 15
adb shell settings put system volume_notification_speaker_scale 15
adb shell settings put system volume_alarm_speaker_scale 15
adb shell settings put system volume_voice_speaker_scale 15These commands scale up the volume for media, notifications, alarms and voice calls. 15 is the safest (default is 7-10).
If the sound starts to be distorted, reduce the value to 12 or 10.
adb shell settings delete system volume_music_speaker_scaleβ οΈ Attention: On some firmware MIUI 14 after application ADB-To record changes, create a task in Automate or Tasker, which will automatically apply commands when you boot.
Install ADB drivers on PC
Turn on USB debugging on your phone
Download Platform Tools from Google
Connect your phone with the original cable (not all) USB-cables support data transmission)

6. Third-party applications for sound amplification
If system methods didn't work, try specialized utilities that work on top of MIUI and can increase volume by software-based sound processing.
- π Volume Booster GOODEV β A simple booster with pre-presets for notifications.
- ποΈ Precision Volume: allows you to fine-tune the volume for each type of signal.
- π SoundAssistant (from Samsung, but runs on Xiaomi) - adds a separate slider for notifications.
When using boosters, watch for distortions of sound - excessive amplification can damage the speakers.
- Increase the volume gradually (no more than +20% in one step).
- Turn off the equalizer in the app, if there is one - it can further mute the sound.
- Check the temperature of the phone after applying the changes (overheating of the speakers is possible).
For models with stereo speakers (for example, Xiaomi 11T or POCO F4), we recommend Wavelet β an application with support for ViPER4Android, which allows you to configure the gain separately for each speaker.

Third-party sound boosters may conflict with MIUI system settings. If the notification volume has become even quieter after installing the application, delete it and clear the cache in Settings β Applications.
7 Hardware Solutions and Service Center
If the software methods did not give a result, the problem may be in the hardware:
- π Contamination speaker - dust and pile accumulate in the grille over time, muffling the sound. Clean the hole with a soft brush or compressed air.
- π§ Damage to speaker membrane β if the sound is wheezing or absent at all, a replacement will be required.
- π± An audio codec malfunction is a rare problem, but on some Xiaomi (like Redmi 9) it occurs after falls.
For diagnosis:
- Call your phone from another device β if the sound of the call is quiet and the music is playing normally, the problem is with the notification dynamics.
- Connect headphones β if they are loud notifications, the external speaker is faulty.
- Record the sound through the built-in voice recorder and compare it to the reference (for example, from another phone).
If the speaker is physically damaged, contact the service center. the cost of replacement on official Xiaomi models (for example, Mi 11 Ultra) - from 1,500 to 3,000 rubles. On budget devices (Redmi 10A) repair will cost 800-1,200 rubles.
β οΈ Attention: On devices with IP-certification (e.g. Xiaomi 13 Pro with a IP68) Self-cleaning of the speaker can violate the tightness. In this case, it is better to contact the service.
