Standard ringtones in Xiaomi smartphones are quickly boring, and finding replacement options in the settings is not always easy โ especially if you recently switched from an iPhone or other Android device. In this article, we will analyze all the ways to set the melody on a call: from using built-in MIUI tools to downloading your own audio files. Separately, consider typical errors (for example, why the melody is not saved) and give tips on how to optimize the sound.
Important: the instructions are valid for MIUI 14 and MIUI 15 (including HyperOS), but most of the methods work on older versions as well. If you have a Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 or the flagship Xiaomi 13/14 series, there is no difference in the algorithm, but owners of devices before 2019 (for example, Redmi 5 Plus) will have to consider the limitations of the old firmware.
1. Standard method: selection from built-in tunes
The fastest method is to use pre-installed ringtones, and the list is updated with each new version of MIUI, so even without downloading your files, you can find something original.
To change the tune:
- Open the Settings app (cog icon).
- Go to the section Sound and vibration.
- Slap on the call melody item.
- Select a category (such as Classic or MIUI) and listen to the options.
- Press OK or Save (depending on the firmware version).
โ ๏ธ Note: On some models (e.g, POCO F4) If you don't find anything suitable, check the tab Downloaded - there automatically get ringtones from the branded store theme Xiaomi.
2.Install your music as a ringtone
If you want to put a favorite song or a unique sound on a call, you have to work a little bit. MIUI doesn't allow you to directly select any audio file, you have to prepare it first.
File requirements:
- ๐ต Format:.mp3,.m4a,.wav (up to 5MB).
- โฑ๏ธ Duration: optimal 15-30 seconds (long tracks will be cut automatically).
- ๐ Location: The file must be in the Ringtones or Notifications folder on internal memory.
Instructions:
- Copy the audio file to the Internal Storage โ Ringtones folder (create it if not).
- Open Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Call melody.
- In the upper corner, press + (or Add).
- Select your file from the list.
Download the song in format MP3|Cut to 30 seconds (e.g. in Audacity)|Rename the file in Latin (without spaces)|Put it in the Ringtones folder|Reboot your phone (if the file is not displayed)-->
Critical detail: If a file doesn't appear in the list, check its bitrate. MIUI can ignore tracks with a bitrate above 320 kbps. Use a converter (such as Online Audio Converter) to reduce quality.
3.Use of ringtone applications
If the standard methods don't work, install a third-party app.
- ๐ผ Zedge โ a huge library of melodies and notifications (there is Russian language).
- ๐ Ringtone Maker โ allows you to crop tracks directly on your phone.
- ๐ถ MP3 Cutter and Ringtone Maker โ Supports smooth attenuation of sound.
How to set a tune through Zedge:
- Download the app from Google Play.
- Find your favorite ringtone and click Install.
- A window will pop up with a suggestion to use a melody - select a Call.
- Confirm in the MIUI settings (permission to change system sounds may be required).
โ ๏ธ Note: Some applications (e.g. Ringtone Maker Pro) require Super User rights to replace system sounds. On unrooted Xiaomi devices, this can cause crashes. Only use proven programs with a rating above 4.5.
4.Redone Replacement via File Manager
This is suitable for experienced users who want to manually replace system tunes, and require a file manager with access to root folders (for example, MiXplorer or Solid Explorer).
Algorithm:
- Download your favorite ringtone in.ogg format (MIUI system files use this format).
- Rename the file to match the name of the standard melody (e.g, miui_ringtone.ogg).
- Using the file manager, go to /system/media/audio/ringtones/
- Replace your existing file with your own (pre-restore!).
- Reboot the phone.
| File name | Type of melody | Location. |
|---|---|---|
| miui_ringtone.ogg | The main ringtone | /system/media/audio/ringtones/ |
| alarm.ogg | Alarm clock | /system/media/audio/alarms/ |
| notification.ogg | Notification | /system/media/audio/notifications/ |
What to do if you do not have access to system folders?

6. Solving ringtone problems
Sometimes the melody doesn't set or resets after a reboot, and let's look at the typical errors and how to fix them.

- ๐ Move the file to the Ringtones root folder (not nested directories).
- ๐ Rename the file in Latin (for example, my_ringtone.mp3).
- ๐ Reboot the phone.

- ๐ Use apps like Ringtone Backup to automatically save settings.
๐ก
If the bell is quieter after the change of melody, check Dynamic Volume settings in Settings โ Special Options โ Sound. Turn off this option for stable volume.
7. Sound optimization: additional settings
Besides the melody itself, MIUI has hidden options to improve the sound of the call:
Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Additional:
- ๐ Call amplification โ increases volume in a loud environment.
- ๐ณ Vibration when calling โ adjust the intensity and rhythm.
- ๐ต The melody of increasing volume โ the sound becomes louder gradually.
