Call personalization for a particular subscriber is not just a way to stand out, but also a useful feature that allows you to instantly know who is calling you, even without taking your smartphone out of your pocket. Owners of Xiaomi and Redmi devices often face the nuances of the MIUI shell, which has its own unique setting structure, different from pure Android. If you are used to the standard algorithm of actions, then you may not find the usual options in the menu, which causes confusion among users.
The process of assigning a customized ringtone requires access to the file system and the right sequence of actions in the phone book. Unlike the global audio setting, where the melody is put for everyone at once, choosing a track for a particular person requires a more point-based approach. We will analyze all available methods, including the use of standard system tools and third-party file managers.
Before you start setting up, make sure that the audio file you want is already stored in your device's memory, that the system won't be able to assign a song if it's only in the cloud or not recognized as a ringtone, and that we take a closer look at the algorithm that's guaranteed to help you solve the problem.
Preparation of audio files for the MIUI system
The first step is to properly place the music file. The MIUI shell and HyperOS have a strict folder hierarchy, and if the track is just at the root of the memory or in the Downloads folder, the phone book may simply "not see" it in the list of available tunes.
The ideal solution would be to move the file to the Ringtones system directory or MIUI/ringtones. To do this, open the standard File Manager Explorer, find the downloaded track, click on it and select the move option. Copying the file to the desired folder greatly increases the chances of its rapid detection by the system.
β οΈ Note: Make sure the file format is compatible with the system. MP3, However, older models may require conversion to M4R or WAV for correct reproduction as a call signal.
If you use a third-party music player, check its file access settings. Sometimes Xiaomi antivirus modules block applications from accessing system folders, which prevents the tracks from showing correctly in the contact list.
π‘
Use short clips of tracks up to 30 seconds for contacts so you donβt get annoyed by the long introduction while you pick up the phone.
Configure through a standard phone book
The fastest and most logical way to set a tune is to do it directly from a contact card, which works consistently on most firmware versions, including current security updates.
Open the Contacts or Phone app and go to the subscriber tab. Find the right person and click on their name to reveal details. In the menu that opens, look for a three-dot button or an edit icon (usually a pencil) to enter the data editing mode.
In edit mode, scroll down to Melody or Rington, and the default is either "Default" or "System." Click on that, and the system player of choice will open.
βοΈ Algorithm of Ringtone Installation
If the list does not contain the song you want, click the plus or Add button to go to the file manager. Select the previously prepared track from the Ringtones folder. After selecting, be sure to click Save (check in the top right corner), otherwise the changes will be lost.
Use of the Google Contacts app
Many Xiaomi users prefer to sync their data with a Google account using the native Google Contacts app instead of the standard Chinese or global version from MIUI. The interface here may differ, but the principle remains similar.
Run the Contacts app (with the Google logo). Find a subscriber and click on their name. Unlike a standard call, here the edit button is often hidden in the top menu or represented by a pencil icon. Once you enter edit mode, find the Add field if Melody is not in the main list.
Add the Melody field and select the audio file. Important: Google Contacts requires permission to access storage to see your local files. If the list is empty, check the permission settings in Settings β Apps β Contacts β Permissions.

Configure through the System Settings menu
Sometimes direct access through the phone book fails because of software failures, and then you can try assigning a tune through global sound settings, although this method is less pointy.
Go to Settings on your smartphone and select Sound and Vibration, which is where you control all of your audio settings on your device, and then you can find the Phone Call and click on it.
In the menu that opens, you'll see a list of system tunes. Scroll down to the end of the list β often there's a Select Music button on the device or a Plus icon. When you select a track here, you'll set it as the primary one, but in some versions of MIUI, you'll then be able to apply it to a particular contact.
β οΈ Note: Setting a tune through common sound settings can overwrite the global ringtone for all incoming ones if you are not careful when choosing a contact to apply.
This method is especially useful if the standard phone book is "glutchy" and does not save the changes. After selecting through the sound settings, go back to the contacts and check if the melody has been applied.
Solving problems with lack of melody on the list
A common situation: the file is in memory, the format is correct, but it is not in the contact list, which is a classic problem of indexing media files in Android.
The system may not be aware of a new file, so to fix this, try restarting your smartphone, and after activation, the system will scan the media files and update the ringtones database.
If the reboot didn't work, check the path to the file. The file should be in internal memory, not on the file. SD-map (if used) as access rights to external drives in new versions of Android are limited. Storage/Ringtones.
Why is the MP3 file not working?
Itβs also worth checking if the file has a read-only attribute or other restrictions that might prevent it from being used by the system as system sound.
Features of working with SIM-card and messengers
It is important to understand the difference between a regular call and a call via Viber, WhatsApp or Telegram. The standard tune-up of the melody in Xiaomi contacts works only for cellular communication (GSM/LTE).
For instant messengers, you have to go into the settings of the app itself, like WhatsApp, you have to open a chat with a contact, click on the name on top, select a Melody and assign your sound. Global phone settings won't work here.
As far as SIM-If you have two numbers on your phone, the melody will play no matter which SIM the call is received, provided that the contact is stored in the phone memory or synchronized account, and not only on one of the SIM cards.
β οΈ Note: If contact is only maintained SIM-card (not in the memory of the phone or Google), it may be impossible to install an individual melody on it due to the limitations of the format of data storage on the SIM.
It is always recommended to copy the contact with SIM-Maps to your phone or Google account for full access to Redmiβs personalization functionality.

Contacts must be stored in the device memory or cloud account to be able to assign individual ringtones.
