Why Xiaomi Redmi notifications are too loud โ and how to fix it
The sound of notifications on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones is often a source of irritation: an alarm at full volume at 6 a.m., a message in the messenger during an important call, or a sudden signal of low battery power at a meeting. The problem is compounded by the fact that MIUI synchronizes the volume of notifications with media sound by default - and if you listened to music at maximum, the next alert will break the silence.
In this article, we will discuss all the ways to reduce the sound of notifications, from the basic settings in the Sound and vibration menu to hidden developer and third-party options. Particular attention will be paid to separate volume control for different types of notifications (SMS, messengers, system alerts), which is not available in the standard MIUI interface. Instructions are relevant for all Redmi models (from Redmi Note 4 to Redmi 13 Pro) and versions of MIUI (including MIUI 14 and HyperOS).
Method 1: Standard volume setting through the control panel
The fastest method is to use a volume slider in the notification curtain, but there are pitfalls here:
- ๐ On Xiaomi Redmi with MIUI 12+ The default slider controls media sound, not notifications. To switch, tap the gear icon next to the slider.
- ๐ฑ On older versions (up to) MIUI (11) the slider immediately adjusts the volume of the notifications, but is reset after the headphones are connected.
- ๐ If the slider is gray and inactive, check if the Do Not Disturb mode is enabled (more on it in Method 3).
Algorithm of action:
- Turn the notification curtain down with a swipe.
- Find the volume slider (usually in the upper right corner).
- Put the pin on the gear badge. โ select Notifications.
- Move the slider to the left to a comfortable level.
๐ก
If the slider resets after the reboot, check the Security app settings (Settings โ Applications โ Autostart Management) โ sometimes MIUI resets user audio settings to save battery.
Method 2: Separate settings via the Sound and Vibration menu
For fine-tuning, go to Settings โ Sound and vibration.
- ๐ต Set a separate volume for notifications, alarm clocks and media (Separate Volume Option).
- ๐ Select notification tunes with pre-listening (some tunes are initially quieter than others).
- ๐ณ Turn off vibration at notifications (useful at night).
- ๐ Activate Smart Sound mode โ it automatically lowers volume in quiet rooms (available on Redmi Note) 11/12/13 new).
Step-by-step instructions for separate settings:
- Open the Settings. โ Sound and vibration.
- Slap it on Loudness.
- Turn on the Divide Volume Switch (if there is no option, your model does not support separation).
- Adjust the Notice slider regardless of other categories.
What to do if there is no option to โSeparate volumeโ?
| Model Redmi | Support for separate volume | The presence of "Smart Sound" |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 13 Pro+ | โ Yes. | โ Yes. |
| Redmi 12/12 Pro | โ Yes. | โ Yes. |
| Redmi Note 11 | โ Yes. | โ No. |
| Redmi 10A | โ No. | โ No. |
| Redmi 9C | โ No. | โ No. |
Method 3: Do Not Disturb Mode and Exceptions for Important Notifications
If you need to completely turn off notifications at a certain time (e.g. at night), use Do Not Disturb mode, but it is important to set the exceptions correctly, otherwise you will miss important calls or SMS.
How to set up:
- Go to Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Do not disturb.
- Select a Schedule and set a time frame (for example, from 23:00 to 7:00).
- In the exceptions section, allow sound to be: ๐ Calls (you can only select from selected contacts). โ ๏ธ LAUGHTERS. ๐ฌ Repeated calls (if someone calls twice within 3 minutes).
Only important notifications
โ ๏ธ Attention: Redmi with MIUI 14+ Do Not Disturb may conflict with Concentration (Digital Well-Being settings). If notifications are missing completely, check both sections.
Method 4: Set up notifications for individual applications
MIUI allows you to customize the notification sound for each application, which is useful if you want WhatsApp messages to be quieter than SMS, or if Telegram vibrates but doesnโt make sounds.
Instructions:
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Select the application you want (for example, Viber).
- Slap the Notice.
- Turn off the Sound switch or reduce the volume manually (if the option is available).
- For instant messengers (for example, Telegram) you can configure notification categories separately (messages, groups, channels).
Examples of settings for popular applications:
- ๐ง Gmail: Turn off the audio for Promotions and Social Media categories, leaving only the Main.
- ๐ฌ WhatsApp: Set a quiet sound for groups while keeping loud for private messages.
- ๐ฎ Games: Turn off the notification sound completely (for example, for PUBG Mobile or Genshin Impact).
Open the application settings|Check notification categories|Prioritize important contacts|Test notification-->
โ ๏ธ Note: Some apps (such as Facebook or AliExpress) ignore the system settings of the sound and use their own.
Method 5: Hidden settings through the developer menu
If standard methods don't work, you can use the developer menu, and there are options that are not available in the basic MIUI interface, including forced volume separation and system sounds switching off.
How to turn on the developer menu:
- Go to Settings. โ The phone.
- Tap 7 times on the item MIUI version (you will be notified you became a developer!).
- Return to the main settings menu and a new section for developers will appear.
Useful options in the developer menu:
- ๐ง Turn off absolute volume โ allows you to divide the volume of notifications and media even on models where this option is hidden.
- ๐ต Turn off sounds when touching โ removes system โclicksโ when pressing the screen.
- ๐ Turn off the lock/unlock sounds.
For forced volume separation via ADB:
adb shell settings put global separate_volume 1This command works on all Redmis with Android 10+, but requires a PC connection and enabled USB debugging.
๐ก
The developer menu allows you to turn off system sounds that cannot be removed by standard methods (for example, the sound of a photo or screenshot).
Method 6: Third-party applications for flexible audio tuning
If the built-in MIUI tools don't work, use third-party apps that allow you to:
- ๐๏ธ Set the volume to a schedule (for example, quieter in the daytime and louder in the evening).
- ๐ Create sound profiles for different situations (work, home, gym).
- ๐ Set different volumes for different contacts.
Top.-3 Applications for Xiaomi Redmi:
| Annex | Functions | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Volume Styles | Sound profiles, schedule, widget on the main screen | Google Play |
| MacroDroid | Automatic volume change on triggers (time, location, headphone connection) | Google Play |
| Notification History | View notification history + set their priority | Google Play |
Example of settings in MacroDroid:
- Create a new macro.
- Select the Time of Day as a trigger (e.g. 22:00โ08:00).
- Add the action Set the volume of notifications to 30%.
- Save the macro and activate it.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Sound management applications require permission to change system settings and may conflict with energy-saving features MIUI. After installation, add them to the AutoStart list (Settings) โ Annexes โ Autostart control).
Frequent problems and solutions
Even after setting the volume, Xiaomi Redmi users face typical problems:
- ๐ Volume is reset after rebooting โ Check the Battery Optimization Settings for the Settings app.
- ๐ง Notifications are loud in headphones, but quiet in dynamics โ Turn off the absolute volume in the developer menu.
- ๐ต No notifications at all. โ Make sure that no vibration or no sound in the curtain is enabled.
- ๐ System sounds (charge, blockages) are too loud โ They can only be disabled through the developer menu or ADB.
If the problem persists, reset the sound settings:
- Go to Settings โ System and device โ Resetting.
- Select Reset Sound Settings (does not affect personal data).
- Turn the volume back.
