Notifications on Xiaomi can be a real problem if they are constantly distracted by audio signals, especially for users who receive dozens of alerts a day from messengers, social networks or work applications. Fortunately, MIUI has several ways to make notifications silent โ both for individual applications and globally for the entire system.
In this article, weโll look at all the possible ways to turn off notifications on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones, including hidden settings that work even on the latest versions of MIUI 14 and Android 14. Youโll learn how to set up quiet mode for specific chats on Telegram or WhatsApp, how to use a Do Not Disturb profile without blocking the alarm, and why sometimes the sound returns after a system update.
Important: some methods may vary depending on the phone model and firmware version. If you do not find the right item on the menu, check the "Frequent Problems" section at the end of the article.
1.Switching off sound for individual applications
The most pointy way is to set up silent notifications for specific messengers or social networks, which is convenient if you want to leave the sound for calls and SMS, but remove it for VK, Instagram or work email.
Instructions:
- Open Settings โ Notifications and Status Bar โ Notification Management
- Select an app from a list (such as Telegram or Facebook)
- Go to the section Sound or Sound of notifications
- Choose the option No Sound or Quiet
- Save the changes.
Some models (e.g. Xiaomi 13 Pro or POCO F5) may need to further disable vibration in the same menu. Note that the interface has changed slightly in MIUI 14 โ now audio settings can be in the tab Additional.
โ๏ธ Checking the application settings
โ ๏ธ Note: Some apps (like WhatsApp) have their own audio settings inside the chat. If you have turned off the sound in the system, but notifications still sound, check the settings of the specific chat in the messenger itself.
2.Use of the "Do Not Disturb" mode
Do Not Disturb (DND) allows you to completely turn off all notification sounds, but at the same time keep the alarm and priority contacts running, which is convenient for the night or during important meetings.
How to set up:
- ๐ฑ Go to Settings. โ Sound and vibration โ Don't disturb.
- ๐ Select a schedule to automatically turn on the time mode
- ๐ฅ In the Exclusions section, add important contacts or apps.
- ๐ Turn off the notification sounds option, but leave alarms and media
MIUI 14 has the ability to create multiple Do Not Disturb profiles for different situations, for example, you can create a separate profile for work, where all notifications will be disabled except calls from colleagues.
| MIUI version | The Way to DND Settings | Features |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12-13 | Settings โ Sound โ Do not disturb | No separate profiles |
| MIUI 14 | Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Do not disturb | Support for multiple profiles |
| POCO Launcher | Settings โ Notifications โ Do not disturb | Additional Options for Games |
โ ๏ธ Note: If after activation, no disturbances have stopped coming SMS โ Check the exception settings. MIUI SMS Default is blocked along with notifications.
3. Set up priority notifications
MIUI allows you to divide notifications into priority and regular, which means that you can leave the sound only for the most important alerts (calls, SMS, reminders), and make the rest silent.
How to set up:
- Open Settings โ Notifications and Status bar
- Select Priority Notifications or Importance Management
- Add to the list of priority applications (calls, SMS, calendar)
- For other applications, select the importance level Low or No Sound
On Xiaomi 12T and new models, this feature is called Smart Notifications and is located in the Special Features โ Notifications section, where you can even customize notification behavior based on your location or connected devices (for example, headphones).
How do the levels of importance work in MIUI
โ ๏ธ Note: If you use Google Messages instead of the standard app SMS, In this case, set the audio separately in Google Messages itself.
4. Disable sound through system sound settings
A less obvious but effective way is to globally disable notification sounds through system settings, which is useful if you want to remove the sound for all notifications at once without setting each application separately.
Instructions:
- ๐ Go to Settings. โ Sound and vibration
- ๐ด Scroll down to the Notifications section.
- ๐ Select the default notification sound and set No Sound or Quiet
- ๐ If necessary, turn off the vibration in the same menu.
On the Redmi Note 12 and other newer models, this item may be called the Notification Sound Scheme. Please note that this will turn off the sound for all notifications except those for which you have customized the settings (see Section 1).
๐ก
If the notifications still make sounds after the sound is turned off, check Media's settings in the same menu, and sometimes the sounds from the video or music override the notification settings.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some firmware (especially custom ones) may reset this setting after the system update. If the sound comes back on its own, check the settings again.
5. Use of automation (for advanced users)
If you need to flexibly manage notification sounds based on time of day, location or other conditions, use the built-in Automation feature in MIUI.
Example of settings:
- Open Settings โ Additional โ Automation (or Settings โ System โ Automation)
- Create a new rule with a condition, such as 23:00 to 7:00
- Change the sound of notifications to "No sound"
- Save the rule and activate it.
On the POCO X5 Pro and other devices with MIUI 14, you can create a chain of conditions, such as turning off the notification sound when the phone is connected to the Mi Band and you are asleep (sleep data is taken from the fitness bracelet).
Example of conditions for automation:
If [Time between 22:00 and 8:00] And [Hearphones connected] โ Turn off the notification soundโ ๏ธ Attention: Automation may conflict with other settings, such as Do Not Disturb. If the rules don't work, check execution priority in the automation settings.
Problems and Solutions: Why is the sound coming back?
Many Xiaomi users experience notification audio settings reset after a system update or reboot, and here are the most common reasons and ways to address them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The sound is back after the update | Resetting default settings | Re-set the sound manually |
| Notifications are heard despite settings | Conflict with an optimizer application | Disable Security or Cleaner in Autoboot |
| No "No Sound" option in the settings | Outdated firmware | Update MIUI to the latest version |
| The sound is only available for some notifications. | Individual settings of the application | Check the settings of each application separately |
If none of these methods worked, try resetting notification settings to factory:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Reset notification settings
- Confirm the action and restart the phone
On some models (e.g. Xiaomi 11T), resetting notification settings can result in deleting all individual settings for applications. Before doing this, back up the settings via Settings โ About Phone โ Backup.

If the problem persists after all the manipulations, check to see if the phone has audio management apps (such as MacroDroid or Tasker) that can override system settings.
