Keyboard sounds on Xiaomi smartphones can be annoying, especially if you type frequently in public or at night. By default, MIUI includes sound effects for the Gboard system keyboard (from Google) and the standard Xiaomi keyboard, but you can turn them off in a few steps. In this article, we will analyze all the current methods for different versions of firmware and models (including Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Mi 11 and others).
The problem is that the keyboard's audio settings are hidden in different menus depending on the MIUI version (12, 13 or 14) and the type of keyboard, and after the system updates, the settings can be reset, and we tested all the methods on the latest firmware versions and put together a checklist to help ensure that you eliminate unnecessary sounds.
If you use a third-party keyboard (like SwiftKey or Fleksy), the instruction will be different, as we will explain in a separate section, and we will also consider how to turn off vibration when typing and why sometimes the sound returns after rebooting.
1. Disable the sound in the standard Xiaomi keyboard (MIUI Keyboard)
Xiaomi's standard keyboard (aka MIUI Keyboard) is installed by default on all smartphones of the brand, to remove sounds when you press the keys:
- Open any field to enter text (for example, notes or a message in Telegram).
- Touch the gear badge (βοΈ) on the keyboard to open its settings.
- Go to Sound and Vibration (or Keyboard Settings β Sound in older versions).
- Turn off the switches: π The sound of the keys is the main sound when pressed; π΅ Input melody β additional sound effects; π³ Vibration upon pressing (optional).
If you don't have Sound and Vibration, you have another default keyboard (see next section) and check if the visually impaired mode is on, which can force the audio prompts to activate.

2. Customize the sound in Gboard (Google keyboard)
Gboard is an alternative keyboard from Google, which is often installed by default on new Xiaomi models (for example, Redmi Note 13 Pro+ or POCO F5).
- Open any text field and tap the icon. βοΈ keyboard.
- Select Settings β Sound when pressed.
- Turn off the slider next to the keyboard sound.
- To turn off vibration, go to Vibration when pressed and select No Vibration.
To fix this:
- Check if the power saving mode is on β it can limit the operation of background processes, including keyboard settings.
- Open Settings β Special features β Hearing β Sound prompts and turn everything off.
- If the problem repeats, disallow keyboard optimization: go to Settings β Apps β App management β [Your keyboard] β Battery β No restrictions.

4. Disable the sound for third-party keyboards (SwiftKey, Fleksy)
If you installed a keyboard from a third-party developer (such as Microsoft SwiftKey or Fleksy), the algorithm will be different.
- Open any text field and tap the icon. βοΈ keyboard.
- Go to Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Turn it off: π Keyboard sound; π³ Press vibration; πΆ The sound of the words (if any).
For Fleksy, the path will be: Settings β Type β Keyboard Sound. If you donβt have an option, update the app or check the permissions (sometimes Android blocks the change of audio settings for third-party keyboards).

5. How to turn off keyboard sound through MIUI system settings
In some versions of MIUI (especially 12 and 13), the keyboard sound is controlled not only in its settings, but also in the global settings of the system.
- Open the Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Scroll down and find the Other Sounds (or System Sounds) section.
- Turn it off: πΉ Keystroke sound; π€ The sound of text input; π System keyboard sound (if any).
On MIUI 14, this section may be called UI Sounds. If there are no options, then your firmware only controls the sounds through the keyboard settings (see sections 1β2).
| MIUI version | The Way to Setting the Keyboard Sound | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12 | Settings β Sound β Other Sounds β Sound of Keystrokes | May require a reboot. |
| MIUI 13 | Settings β Sound and vibration β System sounds | The option is hidden in the submenus |
| MIUI 14 | Settings β Interface Sounds β Entering Sound | It's working without rebooting. |
| Gboard | Gboard settings β Sound when pressed | Requires an update to version 12.0+ |
6. Additional methods: Disconnection via ADB or Safe Mode
If the keyboard sound is not turned off by standard methods, you can use Safe Mode or ADB-Teams (for advanced users).
Method 1: Safe Mode
- Press the power button before the off menu appears.
- Press and hold Disconnect Power β a suggestion will appear to go to Safe Mode.
- In this mode, turn off the keyboard sound through the settings (see sections above).
- Restart the phone and the settings will remain.
Another common problem is that the sound comes back when the headphones are connected, and this is because of the Automatic Sound Switching function in MIUI, to turn off:
- Go to Settings β Sound and vibration β More
- Turn off Automatic Sound Switching when connecting devices.

If the keyboard sound is only heard in certain applications (like WhatsApp or VK), the problem is not with the keyboard, but with the settings of the app itself. Check the "Sounds" section in the messenger settings.
