How to completely or partially turn off the sound on Xiaomi: phones, TV, smart watches

Xiaomi devices, from Redmi and POCO smartphones to Mi TVs and Mi Band smartwatches, offer flexible audio settings. But sometimes you need to turn off the sound completely, at night, at an important meeting or when system notifications are annoying. In this article, we will examine all the ways, from basic to hidden MIUI functions, which work even on locked devices.

It's important to understand that "turning off the sound" can mean different things. For some, it's a silent mode with vibration, for others, a complete shutdown of the microphone or system signals. We'll look at all scenarios, from temporarily turning off the alarm clock to a deep shutdown through ADB for power users, and we'll also tell you how to return the sound if something went wrong.

1. Quickly shutting down the sound on Xiaomi smartphones

The most obvious way is to use physical buttons or notification bars. On all Xiaomi smartphones (including Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Mi 11), this works the same way:

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Press the volume button down to the end, and a slider will appear (๐Ÿ””) Below to switch to modes: Sound (normal mode) Vibration (sound is off but vibration is working) No sound (complete shutdown of sound and vibration)
  • ๐Ÿ”• Alternative: swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification bar. Find the sound icon (speaker) and tap it to switch modes.
  • ๐Ÿ•’ Temporary shutdown: in MIUI You can set up automatic sound returns, so you can hold your finger on the sound icon in the notification panel. โ†’ Choose Set Up โ†’ Recover the sound in (set the time from 15 minutes to 24 hours).

This method works even on a locked screen (unless the function in the security settings is disabled). But what if the volume buttons are broken or unresponsive?

2. Turn off the sound through the MIUI settings

If you need more subtle controls โ€” for example, turn off the sound for notifications or alarms only โ€” go to the settings. The path may slightly differ depending on the version of MIUI (12/13/14), but the general logic remains:

  1. Open the Settings. โ†’ Sound and vibration.
  2. In the Sound Modes section, select: No sound โ€“ complete shutdown (including alarm clocks unless an exception is set up). Do not disturb โ€“ flexible settings with exceptions for calls or alarms.

Additional settings

One important thing is that you can set exceptions in Do Not Disturb mode, like allowing calls from favorite contacts or repeat calls within 3 minutes, which is useful if you don't want to miss an important call, but block all other sounds.

What if the "Sound and Vibration" item is missing?
On some firmware (e.g., global versions for Europe), this section may be called Sound & Vibration or hidden in Additional Settings. If you don't find it, search by settings (the magnifying glass icon at the top).

On Mi TV and Redmi TV, the way is different:

  1. On the remote, press Settings.
  2. Go to Sound. โ†’ Sound mode.
  3. Select Turn off or reduce the volume to 0 using a slider.

3. Turn off the alarm clock and timers

Alarm clocks in Xiaomi often ignore silent mode to turn off their sound:

  • ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ In the Clock (or Clock) app, go to the Alarm tab.
  • ๐Ÿ”‡ Touch the alarm clock. โ†’ uncheck the Sound or select No Sound in the list of tunes.
  • โฑ๏ธ For timers: in the same app in the Timer tab, click on three dots (โ‹ฎ) โ†’ Timer settings โ†’ Turn off the sound after it's gone.

In MIUI 14, alarms are played by default even in Do Not Disturb mode unless an exception is set up. To fix this, go to Settings โ†’ Sound โ†’ Do Not Disturb โ†’ Exceptions โ†’ Alarm clocks and turn off the slider.

4. Complete microphone shutdown

If you want to turn off not sound playback, but its recording (for example, for privacy), use these methods:

  • ๐ŸŽค For calls: during the conversation, click on the screen โ†’ tap the microphone icon (๐ŸŽ™๏ธ), The interviewee won't hear you, but you'll hear him.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ For all applications: Go to Settings โ†’ Annexes โ†’ Permits โ†’ Microphone: Disable access for unnecessary apps (e.g. TikTok, Instagram).

5. Hidden Ways: ADB and Developers

For advanced users who want to completely disable system-level sound (including system notifications and charging sounds), the ADB method will be suitable.

Before starting, make sure that:

  • The PC has Android Platform Tools installed.
  • The phone has USB debugging enabled (Settings โ†’ About Phone โ†’ MIUI Version โ†’ 7 times click on version โ†’ go back to Additional Settings โ†’ For Developers).
