The Xiaomi Redmi Note 10S is a popular smartphone with good sound characteristics, but the built-in noise cancellation during calls or video recording sometimes works too aggressively. Users complain of cropped voices, missing sounds or unnatural "robotization" of speech. Fortunately, this feature can be disabled - in at least four ways.
In this article, we'll go through all the available methods, from standard MIUI settings to hidden parameters of the engineering menu, and it's important to understand that completely turning off noise cancellation can degrade sound quality in noisy conditions, such as on the street or in traffic, but if you're recording music, streaming or just wanting to hear natural sound, our instructions will help.
Note: the procedure may vary slightly depending on the version of MIUI (12, 13 or 14).We tested the methods on the Redmi Note 10S with MIUI 14.0.6 Global firmware, but they should work on other versions as well.
1. Disable noise reduction through standard MIUI settings
The easiest way is to use the built-in options of the system. Unfortunately, MIUI does not have a direct checkbox "Switch off noise cancellation", but you can influence its operation through microphone settings and calls.
Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management, then:
- Find the Phone app (for calls) or Camera app (for video recording).
Some versions of MIUI have the option to turn it off, Voice Improvement or Noise Reduction, and if you don't have one, move on to the next method.
β οΈ Warning: After disabling the sound improvements, echoes or background noise may appear in the calls. check the quality on a test call before important conversations.
2.Use of the Engineering Menu (MTK Engineer Mode)
The Redmi Note 10S is built on a MediaTek Helio G95 chip, which means it has a hidden engineering menu with advanced audio settings, a method that requires caution β improper changes can worsen the quality of communication.
To open the menu:
- Open the Phone app and enter the code ##36446337###
If the sound in the calls became too quiet or there were interference, return the settings to Enable.
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
| Parameter in the engineering menu | Recommended value | Effects of change |
|---|---|---|
| Noise Suppression | Disable | Turns off background noise filtering, the voice becomes more natural, but there may be interference. |
| Echo Cancellation | Disable | Disables echo suppression, is useful for recording music, but can worsen legibility in calls. |
| Speech Enhancement | Normal or Off | Removes artificial voice enhancement, the sound becomes "flat", but without distortion. |
| Mic Gain | 0 dB or 3 dB | Reduces the sensitivity of the microphone, reduces background noise, but the voice can become quieter. |
3. Disconnection via the Camera app (for recording video)
If noise cancellation interferes with video recording, it can be turned off directly in the Xiaomi Camera app, which does not affect calls, only media files.
Instructions:
- π€ Find the "Sound" or "Microphone" sectionΒ».
If your MIUI version doesnβt have these options, try recording video in a third-party app (like Open Camera or FilmoraGo) where noise cancellation can be manually disabled.
π‘
For professional audio recording, use an external microphone connected via USB-C or Bluetooth. Even budget models like the Boya BY-M1 or Fifine K688 will give a better result than the built-in microphone of a smartphone, even with noise cancellation turned off.
Advanced method: Disconnection via ADB (for power users)
If standard methods fail, you can turn off system-level noise cancellation using the Android Debug Bridge (ADB), a technique that requires a computer and basic command-line knowledge.
Step-by-step:
- Download and install Platform Tools from the official Android website.
- Enable USB debugging on your phone: Settings β About Phone β MIUI version (tap 7 times to become a developer), then Settings β Additional β Developers β Debugging over USB.
- Connect the Redmi Note 10S to your computer and confirm the debugging permission.
- Open the command line (Windows) or terminal (macOS/Linux) in the folder with the platform-tools.
- Enter the command to check the connection: Adb devices must appear serial number of your device.
- Execute the command to disable noise reduction: adb shell settings put global audio_effects_enabled 0
- Reboot the phone.
Attention! This command turns off ALL of the system's sound effects, including equalizer, surround sound, and headphone enhancements.
adb shell settings put global audio_effects_enabled 1β οΈ Attention: Misuse of the right ADB Do not change other settings unless you are sure of their purpose. We recommend that you back up your data before experimenting.

5. Resetting the sound settings to factory
If something goes wrong after the sound experiments (e.g., the speaker is gone or the microphone is off), you can reset the settings to factory settings. It won't delete your data, but it will reset all the parameters associated with sound and communication.
How to reset:
- Go to Settings β System and device β Resetting.
- Select Network and Sound Reset (or similar).
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot.
After reset, the noise cancellation will switch on again, but all other sound parameters (equalizer, volume) will return to the default values, which is useful if you have βbrokenβ the sound with previous manipulations.
π‘
Resetting the audio settings is the last chance to get the microphone or speaker back on track if other methods have not worked. Don't confuse it with a full phone reset that deletes all data!
6. Alternative solutions: third-party applications and accessories
If built-in methods are not satisfied, consider these options:
- π§ External microphone: Connect through USB-C Bluetooth (e.g. Rode VideoMic or Shure) MV7). Most of these microphones have their own noise reduction, which can be adjusted separately.
- π± Recording apps: Open Camera, FilmoraGo or Dolby On let you manually disable audio processing.
- π Headphones with microphone: Use a headset (e.g. Xiaomi Buds) 3T Pro β their microphones often handle noise better than the built-in phone.
- π οΈ Custom firmware: Firmware like LineageOS or Pixel Experience may offer more flexible audio settings, but installing them requires unlocking the bootloader.
Before buying accessories, check their compatibility with Redmi Note. 10S. For example, some USB-C microphones require OTG-adapter.
