Why you might need to turn off speakers on Xiaomi
The speakers in Xiaomi smartphones are not only a source of music and notifications, but also a potential cause of discomfort. Imagine if you're in an important meeting, and the phone suddenly starts playing loud ads in the app. Or at night you get a message and the alarm clock wakes up the whole family. Even in "Do Not Disturb" mode, some system sounds can slip - especially on MIUI firmware with customized settings.
Turning off the speakers isn't always a radical measure. Sometimes it's a temporary solution, like when the headphone jack breaks and the Bluetooth headset goes out of power, or when you want to test the microphone without interference from external sound. In this article, we'll look at all the possible ways, from basic to hidden, that work even on locked devices.
Method 1: Quickly shutting down the sound with volume buttons
The most obvious method is to use physical buttons on the phone body. On all Xiaomi models (including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Mi 11), this works the same way:
- Press the volume button (top button on the left end).
- Continue to press it until the slider reaches the leftmost position (image icon) 🔇).
- Confirm the action if a pop-up appears with the question “Switch off all sounds?”
⚠️ Warning: This method only turns off media sound and notifications, but not system signals (such as the sound of a camera or alarm clock.
Method 2: Completely disable via MIUI settings
If the buttons do not help or you need to turn off all sounds without exception, including system ones, follow this instruction:
- Open the Settings. → Sound and vibration.
- Move the Media Volume slider to the far left position.
- Slip on “Additional settings” (bottom of the screen).
- Turn off the options: 🔔 The sound of notifications 📸 The sound of the camera shutter ⏰ The sound of the alarm clock (if not used) 🎵 Sound when charging is connected
Some models (such as the Xiaomi 13 Pro) have a separate No Sound switch in the notification panel, swipe down from the top of the screen and find the bell icon with the crossed speaker.

Method 3: Do Not Disturb (DND) Mode with Settings
The Do Not Disturb function blocks all sounds, but it needs to be configured correctly to make it 100% work:
- Go to Settings → Notifications → Do not disturb.
- Activate the switch at the top of the screen.
- Tap “Rules” → “Add a rule” and select “Always”.
- In the section "Sounds and vibrations" mark: 🔕 Turn off media sound. 📵 Turn off the vibration. 🚫 Block system sounds
⚠️ Attention: B MIUI 14/15 regime DND By default, it skips alarms and calls from favorite contacts. To turn off everything without exception, select Nobody in the rules under Exceptions».
What to do if DND does not work?
Method 4: Engineering menu (for advanced users)
If standard methods fail, you can use the engineering menu (#4636###) which is suitable for turning off hardware sound at the system level, but requires caution:
- Open the Phone app and enter the combination: ##4636###
- Choose “Audio Testing” (Audio Testing).
- In the Speaker section, move the Volume slider to 0.
- Click “Set Default” to save the settings.
Attention! Changes to the engineering menu can cause the speakers to fail. If the sound disappears completely after this action (including the headphones), reset the settings in Settings → System → Resetting → Network Settings Reset.
| Xiaomi model | Combination for the engineering menu | Does the sound blackout work? |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12 | ##4636## | Yes. |
| POCO F3/F4/F5 | ##36446337## | Yes (for media sound only) |
| Xiaomi 12/13/14 | #4636## or #2846579# | Partially (systemic sounds may remain) |
| Black Shark 4/5 | #4636##+ Hardware Testing | Yes. |
Method 5: Disconnect via ADB (for developers)
If you're familiar with Android Debug Bridge (ADB), you can turn off the sound software, which is useful if the phone is locked or doesn't respond to touch:
- Connect your phone to your PC and activate USB Debugging in Settings → About Phone → MIUI version (tap 7 times to unlock Developer Settings).
- Open the command line on PC and type: adb shell settings put global volume_music 0 adb shell settings put global volume_alarm 0 adb shell settings put global volume_notification 0 adb shell settings put global volume_system 0
- Reboot the phone.
If the problem persists, it may be the firmware that is to blame. Some versions of MIUI (especially beta versions) have sound control bugs, in which case a rollback to stable firmware or an update through Settings → System Update will help.
💡
On dual-speaker models (such as the Xiaomi 13 Ultra), turning off the audio through the settings may not work for stereo sounding, in which case use the engineering menu or ADB.
