Xiaomi smart outlets are some of the most popular home automation devices thanks to their combination of affordable price, reliability and integration with the Mi Home ecosystem. However, even such a simple device can raise questions on first connection: why the outlet does not find the network, how to properly sync it with the application, or what to do if the indicator flashes red.
We will look at the current models of 2023-2026 (including Xiaomi Mi Smart Socket 2, Aqara Smart Plug and others), and give recommendations on the choice between them.
What models of Wi-Fi outlets Xiaomi exist and how they differ
Xiaomi and its sub-brands (Aqara, Yeelight) are launching several types of smart outlets that are not only design-based, but also functional.
- π Xiaomi Mi Smart Socket 2 β basic model with Wi-Fi support 2.4 GHz, maximum load 10And/2200Watts and remote control, suitable for most household appliances (except for high-power heaters).
- π Aqara Smart Plug (Zigbee) β works through the Aqara hub on the Zigbee 3.0 protocol, which makes it more stable in the conditions of weak Wi-Fi. Supports automation scenarios with other Aqara devices.
The main selection criteria:
- πΆ Connection type: Wi-Fi (easier to set up but dependent on router) or Zigbee (requires hub but more stable).
If you plan to integrate the socket into complex scenarios (for example, turning on the lights when opening the door), it is better to choose Aqara with Zigbee support. For simple tasks (control iron or charger), the basic Mi Smart Socket 2 will be enough.
What to do with connection: Device preparation
Before you start setting up, make sure you have everything you need:
- π± Smartphone on Android 6.0+ or iOS 12+ with the Mi Home app installed (you can download it from the App Store or Google Play).
- π Router with Wi-Fi support 2.4 GHz (smart outlets Xiaomi does not work on the network 5 GHz!). the name of the network should not contain Cyrillic or special characters (for example, Xiaomi smart sockets do not work on the network 5 GHz, #,!).
- β‘ Faulty electrical network: the socket must be connected to the 220V network and not used to power other devices during setup.
Install the Mi Home app
Connect to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
Insert the socket in the 220V network
Check the name of the network (Latin only)
Shut down. VPN smartphone-->
Important: If your router is broadcasting two networks with the same name (for example, MyWiFi for the Internet). 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), temporarily shut down 5 GHz in router settings or rename the network 2.4 GHz (e.g. in MyWiFi_2G). This will save you from connection problems.
β οΈ Note: If you are using Aqara Smart Plug, you will need an Aqara Hub (e.g. Aqara Hub) M2). Without it, the socket will not be able to connect to the system.
Step-by-step: how to connect Xiaomi Wi-Fi outlet to Mi Home
Consider the process using the Xiaomi Mi Smart Socket 2. For other models, the steps are similar, but the menu items may differ.
- Step 1. Turn the power outlet on the network. Insert the power outlet into the working electrical network. The indicator should start flashing orange (connection waiting mode). If the indicator is constantly on or not glowing, press and hold the button on the socket for 5 seconds until the blinking begins.
- Step 2. Open the Mi Home app and log in (if you haven't already). Make sure your account is linked to Russia (or China if you use the Chinese version of the outlet). To check the region, go to Profile β Settings β Region.
- Step 3. Add a new device Press + β Add the device in the upper right corner. In the category list, select Socket. The application will automatically start searching for the devices.
- Step. 4. When the socket is found, the application will prompt you to connect to its temporary network (the name will begin with the Xiaomi_ or MiSocket_). Confirm the connection and return to Mi Home.
- Step 5: Select your home Wi-Fi network Enter your 2.4GHz network password and wait for the setup to be completed. The socket indicator should light up blue (successful connection) or green (in some models).
If there is an error at any stage (for example, βUnable to connectβ), check:
- π Reboot the router and the socket (pull out/paste back in).
- π΅ Make sure your smartphone is connected to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (not mobile data).
- π Temporarily disable the firewall or antivirus on your smartphone.
What if the socket does not flash orange?
Setting up the socket after connecting: scenarios and automation
Once successfully connected, the outlet will appear in the Mi Home main menu, and you can now customize it to suit your needs:
| Function | How to set up | Example of use |
|---|---|---|
| Remote on/off switching | Click on the socket icon in the application β the On/Off button. | Turn on the heater 30 minutes before returning home. |
| Timer. | Go to the socket settings β Timer β add the on/off time. | Automatic shutdown of the iron in 1 hour. |
| Schedule | In the settings of the socket, select the Schedule β specify the days of the week and time. | Turn on the New Year garland from 18:00 to 23:00 daily. |
| Monitoring of energy consumption | Available in supported models (e.g. Yeelight Smart Plug) and the data is displayed in the Energy section. | How much electricity is used by the refrigerator in a month. |
To create complex scenarios (for example, turning on the socket when opening the window), use the Automation section in Mi Home.
- Choose Automation. β Create a script.
- Please specify the condition: Door opening sensor β Open.
- Add the action: Rosette β Turn on.
π‘
If the outlet often disconnects from Wi-Fi, attach a static IP-address in the router settings, which will help to avoid problems when changing DHCP-address.
Typical errors and their solutions
Even if you set it up properly, you can have problems, and here are the most common mistakes and ways to fix them:
- π΄ The indicator flashes red - the socket can not connect to Wi-Fi. Check: Network name (Latin only, without spaces). Router mode (should support 802.11 b/g/n). Turn off the βClient Isolationβ function in the router settings.
- π The power outlet plugs in, but shuts off immediately -- maybe the overload protection has gone off. Check the power of the connected device (should not exceed 2200W for most models).
- π΅ The app doesn't find a socket, try: Reboot your router and smartphone; Set China in Mi Home settings (sometimes helps for Chinese versions of devices); Use another smartphone (on Android instead of iOS or vice versa).
β οΈ Note: If the Aqara outlet does not connect to the hub, make sure the hub is updated to the latest firmware version. β Update of the PO.
If none of these methods worked, try resetting the socket to factory settings: press and hold the 10-15 second button until the indicator flashes orange quickly.
Safety when using smart sockets
Smart outlets make life easier, but require compliance with safety rules:
- β‘ Do not exceed the maximum load: for example, for Mi Smart Socket 2 it is 2200W. Connecting a powerful heater or kettle can lead to overheating and fire.
- π Do not use the socket in damp areas (bathroom, sauna) without protection from moisture. IP44 higher.
- π Protect the Mi Home app with a password: If someone accesses your account, they can manage all the devices in the house.
- π΅ Turn off the socket in a prolonged absence (for example, on vacation) to avoid the risk of short circuits.
Critical information: Xiaomi outlets are not designed to connect inductive load devices (such as pumps or refrigerator compressors) and this can cause contact damage and fire.
If you plan to use a lighting control outlet, opt for smooth-on models (like the Yeelight Smart Plug) to avoid voltage spikes when lighting up.
Comparison with peers: which is better, Xiaomi or other brands?
