Introduction: What to Know Before Connecting
Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop Essential is a budget-friendly but functional model that combines dry and wet cleaning. However, even such a simple device requires the right network and app connection to unlock the full potential: schedule control, zoning, voice control via Alice or Google Assistant.
Many users face problems at the interface stage: the robot does not find the network, the Mi Home application gives an error, or the device constantly resets the connection. Most often this is due to incorrect router settings, outdated firmware version or banal errors when entering a password. In this article, we will analyze the unique connection algorithm specifically for the Essential model, which is different from the instructions for Xiaomi flagship vacuum cleaners (for example, S7 or S10+).
Compilation and preparation for connection
Before you start setting up, make sure you have everything you need. The standard Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop Essential box should include:
- π€ The robot vacuum cleaner itself with a battery installed
- πΆ Charging base (dock station) with power supply
- π Power cable (usually with a Euro fork, an adapter may be required)
- π§Ή Removable dust container + filter HEPA
- π§ Water tank with fabric nozzle
- π Short instructions (often in multiple languages, but without details over Wi-Fi)
If something is missing, it's a good idea to go to the store, for example, without a docking station, the robot can't automatically recharge, and without it, it can't recharge. HEPA-The filter quality of the cleaning will deteriorate markedly, and make sure that the base has a sticker with the MAC-Address β it may be needed to manually configure the router.
Install the robot on the charging base (should squeak)
Connect the base to the outlet (the indicator on the base will light up white)
Make sure that the Wi-Fi router is running at 2.4 GHz
Download the latest version of the Mi Home app (App Store/Google Play)
Shut down. VPN Proxies on your phone (they block Xiaomi servers)-->
Note: Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop Essential only supports 2.4 GHz networks. If your router is running in 5 GHz or 2.4 + 5 GHz (DUAL BAND), you will have to temporarily disable 5 GHz or create a separate network for 2.4 GHz. This limitation applies to most budget Xiaomi devices, including Yeelight light bulbs and Aqara sensors.
Installation of the Mi Home application and account registration
The Mi Home app (also known as Xiaomi Home) is the central hub for managing all of Xiaomiβs ecosystem devices.
- π± App Store for iOS (requires iOS 10.0 or later)
- π€ Google Play for Android (Android 5.0)+)
Once installed, the app will prompt you to register for a Xiaomi account or log in through an existing one. If you already have an account (for example, for a Redmi smartphone), use it so that all devices will be linked to one profile.
- Choose the country of Russia (important for the correct work of voice assistants).
- Please specify a valid email or phone number (SMS/code confirmation is required).
- Create a strong password (minimum length β 8 characters, with numbers and letters).
By phone number.

β οΈ Note: If you choose China or Europe, some features (such as voice control in Russian) may not work properly, and the Chinese version of the app will have Chinese interfaces, and servers may be blocked in Russia.
Step-by-step instructions for connecting a robot to Wi-Fi
Now, to the most important step, which is to pair the vacuum cleaner with the network, follow the instructions strictly by the steps.
- Turn the robot on. Put it on the charger, it should automatically turn on (white light will light up). If not, press and hold the power button on the case for 3 seconds.
- Activate pairing mode. Press the Home button (with the image of the house) and Power for 5 seconds at the same time until you hear an audible beep (two short squeaks). The indicator on the robot will flash orange.
- Open Mi Home. Press. + β Add the device β Robot vacuum cleaners β Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop Essential.
- Select a Wi-Fi network. The app will offer a list of available networks. Select yours (2.4GHz only!) and enter your password. If the network is not listed, click Other Network and enter the name (SSID) manually.
- Wait until it's done. The robot will emit a long beep, and the app will have a message, "Connected successfully." It takes 1-3 minutes to complete.
If there is an error at any stage (for example, you failed to connect to the device), try:
- π Reboot the robot (hold the power button for 10 seconds).

Setting up the robot after connecting
After successfully pairing with Wi-Fi, the robot will appear in the main menu of Mi Home, and now you need to configure it for your tasks:
- Update firmware. Go to Device Settings β Update firmware. If a new version is available, install it. This will fix bugs and add new features (such as support for cleaning areas).
- Calibration of sensors. The first time a robot can move randomly, which is normal, let it complete the first cleaning (preferably in an empty room) so it can map the room.
- Schedule settings: In the Cleaning section, you can set the days and times of automatic cleaning, for example, at 10:00 a.m. every day when you are not home.
- Cleaning modes. Choose the optimal mode: Quiet for night cleaning (low power, low noise); Balanced - standard mode (recommended); Turbo - maximum power (for carpets or heavy pollution); Wet cleaning - only for smooth surfaces (laminate, tiles).
β οΈ Warning: If you use a robot for wet cleaning, never pour foam or bleach into the tank. This will damage the pump and fabric nozzle. Only clean water or special cleaning products for robot vacuum cleaners (for example, Xiaomi Floor Detergent) are allowed).
π‘
To keep the robot from getting tangled in wires, use special magnetic tapes (sold separately) glue them to the floor along the boards, and the robot will bypass these areas like virtual walls.
Common mistakes and their solutions
Even after a successful connection, problems can arise, and the table below shows the most common errors and ways to fix them:
| Mistake. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Robot doesn't connect to Wi-Fi after reset | Network settings are lost or firmware is damaged | Reset the robot to factory settings (hold the Home + Power buttons for 10 seconds) and reconnect |
| The app shows "Offline." | The robot went into sleep mode or lost contact with the router | Wake the robot up with the power button or restart the router. If it doesn't work, check if the Wi-Fi password has changed. |
| Robots don't build a map of the room | Too dark in the room or on the floor are mirrors / glass | Remove the reflective surfaces and provide good lighting, and check if the lidar (top sensor) is covered with dust. |
| Error "Low battery charge" at 100% | Failure of the battery or docking station | Try to clean the contacts on the base and the robot with an alcohol napkin. If the error persists, contact the service. |
If none of these solutions worked, check to see if the router is activated with Client Isolation, which blocks device interaction on the local network, making it impossible for the robot to communicate with Xiaomi servers. β Additional settings).
