Why Just Pulling Out a Cord Is a Bad Idea, and How to Do It Right
Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaners (including the Mi Robot Vacuum, Dreame, and Viomi models) are designed to operate at constant alert, but sometimes they need to be turned off completely to transport, deep clean, or reset. Here comes the complexity: the manufacturer does not always make the power button obvious, and a forced disconnection from the network can lead to firmware failures.
The main problem is that many users confuse sleep mode (when the vacuum cleaner is dormant on the base but remains connected to the Wi-Fi) with a complete shutdown (when the device is completely powered down). In the first case, the robot continues to consume energy and can spontaneously start on a schedule. In the second, it requires physical action on the button or extraction of the battery, we will analyze all the official and hidden methods, and also explain when to use.
It is important to consider the model of your device: for example, in the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite, the power button is combined with the return button to the base, and in the Dreame Bot Z10 Pro, you need to hold the touch panel for 5 seconds to turn off. If you are not sure about the model, check it in the Mi Home application or on the sticker under the dust collector cover.
Method 1: Classic button-off (for most models)
The most obvious method is to use a physical button on the body, but its location and operation vary depending on the generation of the device:
- π Models. 2016β2019 (Mi Robot Vacuum) 1/1S/2): The power button is on the top panel next to the Home button, and you press and hold it. 3β5 seconds before the beep.
- π Models. 2020β2022 (Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop) P/E/T): The button is aligned with the touchpad. Hold the power icon (β») vibrate.
- π± Models. 2023β2026 dreame bot. X30/L20): The button is hidden under the dust collector cover, so you open the lid and hold the hidden key. 10 seconds.
If the button does not respond:
- Check if it is blocked by dirt or protective film (relevant for new devices).
- Connect the vacuum cleaner to the charging base for 10 minutes - sometimes a discharged battery blocks the shutdown.
- Try pressing the Reset button (if any) β this can unlock the control panel.
Make sure the vacuum cleaner is not cleaned | Check the battery charge (minimum 20%)| Clear the dust button | Hold the button to double signal-->
In the Viomi V3 and Dreame D9 models, the power button only works when the battery is connected β if you remove it, the device will not turn off in the standard way.
Method 2: Turn off via Mi Home/Dreame
Software shutdown is convenient if the vacuum cleaner is on the base or in another room, but this method does not work on all firmware:
- Open the Mi Home app (or Dreame for the respective models).
- Select your vacuum cleaner from the list of devices.
- Go to Control β Turn off (or Settings β Power β Disable).
- Confirm the action β some models require input PIN-code (default 1234).
| Model vacuum cleaner | Does the shutdown support through the application | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Mi Robot Vacuum 1/1S | β No. | Just a physical button. |
| Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro | β Yes. | Requires firmware 3.5.8+ |
| Dreame Bot W10 | β Yes. | It only works when connected to 5G Wi-Fi |
| Viomi V2 Pro | β οΈ Partially. | It is turned off, but after 24 hours it automatically turns on. |
If the βSwitch offβ option is not in the menu:
- π Update the vacuum cleaner firmware through Settings β Update of the PO.
- π± Reinstall the Mi Home app (sometimes interface glitches hide the button).
- π Check the region of the account β the Chinese version of the application has more features.
Method 3: Voice control (for Alice or Google Assistant devices)
If your vacuum cleaner is integrated into the Yandex or Google Home ecosystem, it can be turned off with a voice command.
- π€ Alice (Yandex): Say "Alice, turn off the vacuum cleaner" only works if the device is linked to Yandex's account via Mi Home.
- π€ Google Assistant: "Hey Google, turn off vacuum cleaner" command requires pre-setting in Google Home.
- π Siri (HomeKit): Not officially supported, but can be configured via HomeBridge (for advanced users).
Important nuances:
β οΈ Attention: Voice shutdown does not completely turn off the vacuum cleaner β it remains in deep sleep mode and can be switched on on schedule or from a command from the application.
If the voice commands are not working:
- Check if the vacuum cleaner is connected to the same Wi-Fi as the speaker/smartphone.
- Restart the router β sometimes local network problems block commands.
- In the Mi Home app, go to Device Settings β Voice Control and enable the βAllow Voice Controlβ option.
π‘
If the vacuum cleaner doesnβt respond to voice commands, try reconnecting it to the ecosystem: remove the device from Mi Home and add it again by selecting the βmainlandβ region when added.
Method 4: Forced shutdown (when nothing helps)
If the vacuum cleaner is stuck, doesn't respond to buttons or an app, you'll have to use hard methods, and they fall into three categories:
- Battery Removal: Turn over the vacuum cleaner and remove the bottom cover (usually mounted on 4-6 screws). Unplug the battery connector (it can be glued - gently tucked with a plastic card). Wait 10 minutes before reconnecting.
Reset via charging base contacts
1. Put the vacuum cleaner on the base.
2. Press the Home button and the power button at the same time.
3. Hold 15 seconds until the indicators flash.Disconnection through the service menu
- Connect the vacuum cleaner to the PC via USB-C (adapter required).
- Use the MiRobot Tool to send a command power_off.
β οΈ Note: Battery recovery on Dreame Bot models L10 And then you cancel the warranty, which the manufacturer considers to be an interference with the design.
After forced disconnection:
- π Charging the vacuum cleaner can take up to 6 hours (the battery is completely discharged).
- π‘ You may need to reconnect the device to Wi-Fi.
- βοΈ In rare cases, user settings are reset (for example, room maps).
What if the vacuum cleaner does not turn on after a forced shutdown?
Method 5: Automatically shut down on schedule
Few people know, but in some models you can program automatic shutdowns at certain times, which is useful if you want to save energy at night or during your absence.
How to set up:
- In the Mi Home app, go to Device Settings β Schedule.
- Select Add the task β Turn it off.
- Set the time and days of the week.
- Save the settings - the vacuum cleaner will turn off at the specified time, but will remain on recharging.
Limitations of the method:
- β° It only works on firmware 4.0 and higher.
- π The vacuum cleaner must be on the base (otherwise the team is ignored).
- π After shutting down on schedule, the device will automatically turn on after 12 hours (this is not a complete shutdown!).
For Dreame models, a similar feature is called Power Saving Mode and is configured in Settings β Power, where you can select activity intervals (for example, turn off from 23:00 to 7:00).
π‘
Automatic shutdown on schedule does not replace total shutdown. Use a physical button or retrieve the battery for transportation or long-term storage.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even experienced users sometimes make mistakes when turning off the robot vacuum cleaner, and here are the most common ones and ways to prevent them:
| Mistake. | Effects of consequences | How to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Pulling the base cord during cleaning | Firmware failure, loss of room map | Stop cleaning the app first, then turn it off. |
| Long-term storage with connected battery | Less than 10% β the battery dies | Turn off the vacuum cleaner and store with a charge of 40-60% |
| Use of an unoriginal power supply unit | Overheating, recharge failure | Check the output voltage (must be 20V/1.5A) |
| Resetting settings without backup | Loss of saved maps and cleaning areas | Save the map in Settings β Map β Export |
Special attention should be paid to models with LiDAR sensors (Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro, Dreame Bot X30). Forced shutdown during a scan of the room can damage the laser module. Always wait for the mapping process to be completed before turning it off.
If the vacuum cleaner after turning off behaves strangely (does not charge, emits a squeak, does not respond to commands), reset to factory settings:
- Hold the Home button and power button for 10 seconds.
- After the beep, release the buttons - the indicators flash yellow.
- Connect the vacuum cleaner to the base and wait for the reboot (takes ~3 minutes).
