Why Yeelight doesnβt connect to Mi Home the first time and how to fix it
Xiaomiβs Yeelight smart bulbs have long been the standard for budget smart home systems, but integrating them with the Mi Home app often raises questions. The main problem is the non-obvious requirements for Wi-Fi network, the lamp firmware version, and regional account settings. For example, if your Mi Account is registered in China and the lamp is purchased for the European market, the connection may be blocked during the search phase of the device.
In this article, we will not only discuss the basic connection procedure, but also unique solutions for errors such as βDevice Failed to Addβ (code 15004) or βDevice Unresponsiveβ (code 15015), which are not described in the official documentation.
Before you start, check out three key points:
- π Yeelight lamp is plugged in and flashes yellow/white light (connection standby mode).
- πΆ Router supports Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz (5 GHz is not suitable for most Yeelight models!).
- π± It's off on the smartphone. VPN Bluetooth enabled (required for some models of lamps with support for Mesh).
Step 1: Prepare the Yeelight lamp for connection
Before you open the Mi Home, you need to put the lamp in pairing mode.
- Put the lamp in the socket, and it should flash yellow (for Yeelight Color models) or white (for monochrome versions).
- If the lamp is on with a steady light, reset its settings. To do this, turn on and off the power 5 times in a row at intervals of 1 second. After the 5th cycle, the lamp will blink 3 times and go into pairing mode.
- For ceiling lamps Yeelight Ceiling reset is performed by holding the button on the case for 10 seconds.
β οΈ Note: If the lamp was previously connected to another application (e.g. Yeelight App or Google Home), it must be unconnected from the previous account. β Settings β Remove the device.

Step 2: Set up the Mi Home app to work with Yeelight
The Mi Home app automatically identifies your account region, but you often need to manually switch to a Singapore or Russian server to work properly with Yeelight.
- Open Mi Home and go to Profile β Settings β Region.
- Select Singapore β this server supports the maximum number of Yeelight devices.
- If Singapore is not available, try Russia, but note that some features (such as voice control via Alice) may not work well.
- After changing the region, be sure to restart the application.
β οΈ Note: If you change region, all previously added devices will temporarily disappear from the list. They will return after returning to the original region, but to connect Yeelight, it is better to use a separate account or export the settings in advance.
| Region in Mi Home | Supported Yeelight models | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore | All models (including Yeelight Pro and Ceiling) | May require confirmation of SMS |
| Russia | Basic models only (without Mesh) | No support for automation scenarios |
| China | Only models for the Chinese market | Requires a Chinese phone number |
Step 3: Step-by-step instructions for connecting Yeelight to Mi Home
Now, we're going to go straight to adding the lamp.
- Open Mi Home and press + β Add the device.
- In the search box, type Yeelight and select your model from the list. If there is no model, choose Other β Lighting β Yeelight.
- The app will suggest connecting to the Wi-Fi lamp network. Click Connect and wait for the notification to go to the network. Yeelight_XXXX.
- Return to Mi Home (don't close the app!) and select your 2.4 GHz home network from the list. Enter your Wi-Fi password.
- Wait until the process is complete (the lamp should flash green). If nothing happens after 2 minutes, restart the process from point 1.
π‘ If the Mi Home lamp gives an error of 15004 during the connection stage to Wi-Fi, try temporarily disabling the firewall on the router or adding it. MAC-The address of the lamp in the list of permitted devices, the address can be found on the sticker under the lamp cap.
What if the lamp is plugged in but shuts off immediately?
Step 4: Solving common connection errors
Even with the right setup, you may encounter errors, and here are the most common ones and ways to fix them:
- π΄ Error 15004 ("Can't Add Device"): Check if the router is not using the device WPA3 β switch over WPA2-PSK. Make sure the Wi-Fi network name doesn't have Cyrillic or special symbols. Try connecting via a mobile hotspot (if the main network is blocking the device).
- π‘ Error 15015 ("Device is not responding"): Reset the lamp (5 times on/off). Check if the router is blocking the protocol UDP Port 54321 (used to communicate with Xiaomi servers).
- π’ Lamp connected but not responding to commands: Update the lamp firmware via Mi Home β Settings of the device β Software Update: Check if the Mi Home is enabled with Do Not Disturb mode (Profile) β Settings β Notifications).
β οΈ Note: If you are using a dual-band router (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz) with a common network name (SSID), Try to divide the networks. 2.4 GHz like MyWiFi_2G, 5 GHz - like MyWiFi_5G. This will help to avoid conflicts when connecting.
Step 5: Set up lamp control via Mi Home
Once connected successfully, the lamp will appear in the main list of devices, and now it can be configured:
- π¨ Color and brightness: For RGB-Yeelight Color is available for color palette and color temperature adjustment (from 2700K before 6500K). Enable Flow mode for smooth color transfusion (in lamp settings).
- β° Automation: Create a script in Mi Home β Automation β Add β If -- For example, "If it's 19:00, turn on the lamp at 50% brightness." Use Mi Home Automations to communicate with other devices (such as a motion sensor.
- π Grouping: Combine several lamps into a group (Devices) β Add a group) for synchronous control.
π§ Useful Lifehack: If you lack features in Mi Home, plug the lamp parallel to Google Home or Apple HomeKit via Mi Home Skill for Amazon Alexa:
- Open Mi Home β Profile β Settings β Smart Home β Connect to Alexa.
- Sign in to your Amazon account and sync your devices.
Step 6: Alternative ways to connect Yeelight
If Mi Home stubbornly refuses to see the lamp, there are workarounds:
- Through Yeelight: Download the official Yeelight app from the App Store or Google Play. Connect the lamp to it, then export it to Mi Home via Settings β Export to Mi Home.
- Through Home Assistant: Install Home Assistant on the Raspberry Pi or NAS. Add Xiaomi Miio integration and enter the lamp token (can be obtained via Mi Home Token Extractor).
Through Tuya Convert (for firmware):
- Suitable for power users: Allows you to flash the lamp with alternative firmware (e.g. Tasmota) to work without the Xiaomi cloud.
- β οΈ Risk of loss of guarantee!
π‘
If the Yeelight lamp was purchased on AliExpress or in an unofficial store, it may have Chinese firmware that is incompatible with the European Mi Home servers, in which case the only way out is through the firmware through the Tuya Convert or requesting a change of region of the device in support of Xiaomi.
