Aqara smart switches are some of the most popular components of Xiaomi’s lighting automation ecosystem. They allow you to control light from your smartphone, on a schedule or through voice assistants, but their work is impossible without a central hub – the Xiaomi Gateway 3. Many users face difficulties when connecting for the first time: the device is not detected, the error indicator flashes or just “hangs” in the application. This article will help you understand all the stages from hardware preparation to fine-tuning scenarios.
We will not only consider the basic procedure for adding a switch to the Mi application. Home/Aqara Home, but also common bugs that prevent a successful connection. 3 It may not see the device even in pairing mode, how to reset the switch to factory settings if something goes wrong, and what network settings are critical for stable operation. Special attention will be paid to the features of different models of Aqara switches (one-, two- and three-key) and their compatibility with the firmware hub.
If you've tried to plug in a switch before, but you haven't succeeded, don't rush it back to the store. 90 percent of the time, it's a setup adjustment or a simple reset, and for those who are just starting out with a smart home system, we'll give you recommendations on how to optimally place the hub and the switches for maximum reliability.
1.What will be needed to connect the Aqara switch
Before you start setting up, make sure you have all the hardware and software you need, and without one of the components, the process will fail.
- 📱 Smartphone with Mi Home (mainland China) or Aqara Home (international servers) installed, and the app version must be at least 6.0.100, as older versions may not have options for Gateway 3.
- 🔌 Xiaomi Gateway 3 with connected power and active Internet connection (via Wi-Fi or Ethernet). Check that the indicator on the hub is lit in blue - this means successful authorization in the cloud.
- ⚡ Aqara switch (model should support Zigbee protocol) 3.0). Aqara Smart Wall Switch (No Neutral, D1), Aqara Opple 2/3/6 Button or Aqara Wireless Mini Switch. check the compatibility of your model on the manufacturer's website.
- 🔧 Screwdriver and voltage tester (for models with electrical connection). If you install a wired switch, be sure to turn off the electricity on the panel before mounting!
Also check that your Gateway 3 is updated to the latest firmware.Oldware may not support new Aqara devices. To check the version, open the Mi Home app, go to Profile. → Settings → Smart home devices → Xiaomi Gateway 3 and find the Firmware Update.
⚠️ Note: If you are using Gateway 3 with international firmware (Europe, Russia, etc.), some Aqara switches may require the hub to be flashed to the Chinese version.
2.Preparation of the Xiaomi Gateway 3 gateway to add devices
Before you plug in the switch, the gateway has to be configured correctly, and a common mistake for beginners is to try to add the device to a hub that is not synchronized with the cloud or is on an unstable network.
Follow this algorithm:
- Check the hub's internet connection. Open Mi Home, find Gateway 3 on the device list, and make sure it has a green checkmark (online status) next to it. If the indicator is red, restart the hub (turn off power for 10 seconds) and check your Wi-Fi settings.
- Activate Device Add-on Mode. Press the button on the hub for 5-10 seconds until you hear a voice message saying "Ready to Add Devices" (in Chinese firmware) or see a flashing yellow indicator.
- Check your regional settings. Go to Mi Home Profile → Settings → Region and select Mainland China if you use the Chinese hub firmware. For international versions, select your region (e.g. Russia).
If the hub is connected via Ethernet, make sure the cable is inserted into the port. WAN (off-the-top LAN!). Also check that the router settings have turned off the filter. MAC-Zigbee protocol addresses and allowed (ports 8080, 9898).

3. Step-by-step instructions for connecting the Aqara switch
Now, the main step is to add a switch to the system, and the process may vary slightly depending on the model (wired or wireless), but the overall scheme is the same.
For wired circuit breakers (e.g., Aqara) D1):
- Turn off the power on the shield!
- Remove the old switch and connect the wires to the Aqara terminals according to the circuitry in the instruction (usually L is phase, L1/L2 — load).
- Set the switch in the rosette and turn on the power. The indicator on the key should flash red (pair mode).
For wireless switches (e.g. Aqara Opple):
- Remove the protective film from the battery compartment (if any).
- Insert the battery (usually) CR2032 or CR2450).
- Press the reset button for 5 seconds until the indicator starts to blink quickly.
We are also working the same way for all models:
- In the Mi Home app, click «+» → «Add the device» → Select the category "Lighting Management».
- In the list, find your switch model (e.g. Aqara Wall Switch). D1). If there is no model, update the app or change region to China.
- Follow the instructions on the screen. The hub should beep and the switch should stop blinking (the indicator will light up green or go out).
If the process is suspended during the search stage of the device:
- 🔄 Restart the hub (turn off power for 15 seconds).
- 📶 Move the switch closer to the hub (maximum 5-7 meters without obstacles).
- 🔋 Check the battery charge (for wireless models).
What if the hub doesn’t see the switch?
4.Setting the switch after connection
Once added successfully, the switch will appear on the device list, but you need to adjust it to work properly.
| Parameter | Recommended value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Type of connection | Zigbee | Make sure the hub uses Zigbee 3.0 protocol, not Bluetooth. |
| Feedback | Included. | The option allows the switch to tell the hub about its state (for example, on/off). |
| Keyboard mode | Switch or Button | For lighting, select the Switch (state is saved), for scripts - the Button (single / double press). |
| Signal level | Higher. -70 dBm | Check in the Hub Settings (Zigbee Devices) → Signal. If lower -80 dBm – Move the switch closer. |
For wired circuit breakers (Aqara) D1 And similarly, be sure to set the Minimum Load setting. If the connected lamps have a total power of less than 5 watts (e.g., LEDs), the switch may not work properly. In this case, add a ballast resistor to the circuit or replace the lamps with more powerful ones.
It is also useful to create backup scenarios in case of loss of communication with the hub, for example, configure the switch to work as a normal mechanical, even if Gateway 3 turns off.
💡
If the switch controls LED tape or remote lamps, check if they support brightness adjustment (Dimmer). Some Aqara models (e.g, D1) They can flicker when working with incompatible light sources.
5. Typical errors and their solutions
Even if you follow the instructions accurately, users face problems, and we've collected some of the most common errors and ways to fix them.
- 🚨 The switch flashes red, but it doesn't connect. Reason: the device hasn't entered pairing mode. Solution: reset it (press the button for 10 seconds) and repeat the process. For wired models, turn off/on power 3 times at 2 seconds intervals.
- 📡 The hub can't see the switch, even though it's flashing, and it's because of a weak Zigbee signal or interference, solution: Move the hub closer to the switch (maximum 5 meters without walls) or change the Zigbee channel in the Gateway 3 settings.
- ⚡ The switch works, but the lamp flickers, and the reason is too low load or incompatible with dimmable lamps. Solution: add a ballast resistor or replace the lamps with supported ones (for example, Yeelight or Philips Hue).
- 🔄 The switch resets after the hub update. Cause: firmware conflict. Solution: update the switch through Mi Home. → Update of the PO).
⚠️ Note: If you are using the Gateway 3 with firmware for Europe or Russia, some Aqara switches (e.g. Opple) 6 Button) may require manual addition via Zigbee commands. To do this, select "Add Manually" in Mi Home and enter the model ID (e.g, lumi.ctrl_neutral1 for Aqara D1).
If none of these methods worked, check the error log in the Mi Home app:
- Go to Profile. → Settings → Device logs.
- Find a record with your switch and error code (e.g. Error: 1002).
- Decode the error using Xiaomi’s official documentation.
💡
Most of the problems with connecting Aqara switches are due to three factors: an incorrect pairing mode, a weak Zigbee signal or an outdated hub firmware. Always start your diagnosis by checking these parameters.
6. Creating automations with an Aqara switch
The main advantage of smart switches is that they can integrate into scenarios, for example, you can set up automatic lights on when you're driving or on a schedule, and let's see how to do that.
Method 1: Through the Mi Home app
- Open Mi Home, go to Automation (Icon) ⚙️ bottom-screen).
- Click on "Add automation» → «Create a script».
- Select a condition (e.g., “Time” or “Motion Sensor”) and an action (“Device Control» → switcher).
- Save the script and test it out.
Method 2: Google Assistant or Alice
- Connect Mi Home to the voice assistant (select Voice Control in the app settings).
- Say, “OK Google, turn on the lights in the living room” (the name of the room should match what is indicated in Mi Home).
Examples of useful automation:
- 🌅 Presence simulation: accidentally turning on/off lights in your absence (use the “Random Timer” option in Mi Home).
- 🚪 Light when opening the door: Connect the Aqara Open sensor and set the script: “If the door is open” → light up».
- 🌙 Night mode: dimm the lights up to 30% after 22:00 (only works with dimmable switches, such as Aqara) D1).
For advanced users, if standard options in Mi Home aren’t enough, use Home Assistant or Node-RED to create complex scripts, which allow you to combine devices from different brands and customize logic using JavaScript.
💡
If the script is running late (more than 1-2 seconds), check local execution. In the automation settings in Mi Home, enable the option “Execute locally” – this will speed up the response, since the command will not go to the cloud.
7. Update of the switch and hub firmware
Regular firmware updates fix bugs, add new features and improve compatibility. Check for updates at least once a month.
How to update the Aqara switch:
- Open Mi Home, find your switch in the list of devices.
- Go to its settings (image) ⚙️) → «Firmware update».
- If a new version is available, click Update and wait until it is completed (don’t turn off the power!).
How to Upgrade Gateway 3:
- At Mi Home, select a hub → «Settings» → «Firmware update».
- If the update requires a reboot, confirm the action. the hub will restart automatically.
After the update:
- Check the switch (turn on/off the lights several times).
- Update scenarios – sometimes new firmware changes the logic of the devices.
- If the switch has stopped responding to commands, reset it and reconnect it.
⚠️ Warning: If all Aqara devices stopped working after the hub update, there may have been a change in the Zigbee protocol, which requires a complete network reset: turn off the hub power for 30 seconds, then reconnect it and add all devices from scratch.
8. Alternative ways of connecting (if nothing helps)
If the standard method of adding a switch didn't work, try alternatives. They require more effort, but often solve the problem.
Method 1: Addition through Zigbee2MQTT
This method is suitable for users who have a server based on Raspberry Pi or Home Assistant:
- Install. Zigbee2MQTT Connect Gateway 3 to it (Zigbee-enabled firmware required).
- In the configuration file configuration.yaml add a line: external_converters: - 'https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zigbee2mqtt/zigbee2mqtt.io/master/data/devices.json'
- Restart the service and try adding a switch via the web interface Zigbee2MQTT.
Method 2: Manual addition via Mi Home API
For experienced users familiar with Python or Postman:
- Get your Mi Home account token through the Mi Home Token Extractor tool.
- Send. POST-request: http://{IP_hub}/miIO.miot_spec_device.add with the body: {"did": "lumi.00000000", // substitute ID your token switch": "YOUR_TOKEN", "ssid": "YOUR_WIFI_SSID", "password": "YOUR_WIFI_PASSWORD" }
Method 3: Use Aqara Home instead of Mi Home
The Aqara Home app sometimes works better with the brand’s devices:
- Install Aqara Home from Google Play or App Store.
- Sign in with the same account as you do on Mi Home.
- Try adding a switch through Aqara Home – the pairing algorithm there may be different.
💡
If the Aqara switch is persistently not connected via the Mi Home, try Aqara Home or third-party systems like Home Assistant. Often the problem lies in the limitations of the hub's regional firmware.
