Why Reboot Xiaomi Gateway and When You Really Need to
Xiaomi Mi Home Gateway is the central element of the smart home ecosystem that manages connected sensors, lamps and other devices, but even the most reliable hardware sometimes fails: devices stop responding to commands, the indicator flashes red, and the Mi Home app appears an error "Gateway is not available." In 80% of cases, the problem is solved by a simple reboot - but it is important to choose the right method.
A reboot of the gateway may be needed in several situations:
- π Smart home devices do not respond to commands from an app or voice assistant
- π¨ Mi Home displays βOfflineβ or βNot Onlineβ status"
- π After updating the firmware, the gateway is unstable
- π‘ Yeelight light bulbs or Aqara sensors are periodically turned off
- π The gateway emits atypical sound signals (squeaking, clicking)
But before you start rebooting, check the basics: make sure the router is giving away the Internet (plug in another gadget), and the gateway power cable is tightly plugged into the socket. If that's not the problem, read on.
Method 1: Soft reboot via Mi Home app
The safest method that does not reset settings or remove conjugated devices is suitable if the gateway is displayed in the application but malfunctions. The instructions are relevant for Mi Home 6.0.100+ versions (2023-2026).
How to do this:
- Open the Mi Home app and go to the Devices tab.
- Find your gateway (usually called the Mi Gateway or Gateway) and tap it.
- In the upper right corner, click on βοΈ Settings β General.
- Scroll down and select Reboot (or Restart in English).
- Confirm the action - the gateway will turn off and re-enable in 20-30 seconds.
β οΈ Warning: If the gateway never appeared on the network after a soft reboot, check if it has changed. IP-router address, sometimes. DHCP-The server assigns a new address to the device, and Mi Home requires re-pairing.

Method 2: Physical reboot with a button on the body
If the gateway is not responding to commands from the application or is not detected at all on the network, hardware reboot will help, which works for all models of Xiaomi and Aqara gateways, including outdated versions.
Step-by-step:
- Turn off the gateway from power (remove the plug from the socket).
- On the back of the device, find a small hole labeled RESET (or just a round button).
- Take a paper clip or toothpick and hold the button for 5-7 seconds until you hear a beep.
- Connect the gateway back to the socket - the indicator should flash yellow (this means that the device is rebooted).
- Wait until the LED turns blue (usually takes up to 1 minute).
| A model of a lock | Location of the RESET button | Sound signal |
|---|---|---|
| Mi Home Gateway 1 (square) | Down, next to the power connector. | One short squeak. |
| Mi Home Gateway 2 (round) | On the back, under the logo. | Two short squeaks |
| Mi Home Gateway 3 (with Zigbee 3.0) | Side, under the lid. | Long squeak + blinking orange |
| Aqara Hub M2 | Inside, under the removable panel. | Three short signals |
β οΈ Warning: If the gateway flashes red after the physical reboot, it is a sign of hardware failure, and a call to a service center is required (especially if the device is warranted).
π‘
If the RESET button doesn't work, try using a needle instead of a paper clip - sometimes the hole gets clogged with dust. Don't put too much effort into not damaging the micro-switch.
Method 3: Complete reset to factory settings
The last measure, hard reset, is when the gateway has stopped responding to any commands or needs to be handed over to a new owner, which removes all the connected devices and resets the Wi-Fi settings.
How to perform the reset:
- Shut the airlock off the power.
- Press the RESET button and, without letting it go, connect the device to the outlet.
- Hold the button for 10-15 seconds until the indicator flashes red and blue alternately.
- Release the button - the gateway will reset (the process will take up to 2 minutes).
- After restarting, the indicator will turn yellow, which means that the device is ready for a new setup.
β οΈ Attention: Once hard reset is done, all the sensors, light bulbs and other devices connected to the gateway automatically untie, and you'll have to re-connect them through the Mi Home app. If you have many devices, take a picture of their list in the app beforehand, which will speed up the reconfiguration.
What if the reset didn't help?
Method 4: Reboot via router (for advanced users)
If physical access to the gateway is difficult (for example, it is installed in a hard-to-reach place), it can be rebooted through the routerβs web interface. This method only works if the router supports the management of connected devices (for example, ASUS RT-AX88U, Keenetic, TP-Link with OpenWRT firmware).
Instructions:
- Enter in the browser IP-your router address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
- Log in (default logins: admin/admin or listed on the router sticker).
- Find the section DHCP-Customers, connected devices or LAN.
- In the list, find the Xiaomi gateway (you can identify by the name lumi-gateway or MAC-address that is indicated on the device body).
- Press Disconnect (or Block), wait 10 seconds and Reconnect (Unblock).
πΉ Note: Some routers (e.g. Xiaomi Mi Router) allow you to reboot devices directly from the Mi Wi-Fi mobile app:
- Open Mi Wi-Fi. β Devices.
- Find the gateway in the list and tap it.
- Select Control. β Reboot.
π‘
Rebooting via the router does not reset the gateway settings, but can temporarily interrupt the work of the smart home (for 1-2 minutes).
Solving common errors after rebooting
Even after a successful reboot, the gateway may not work properly, and here are the typical problems and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway flashes yellow and doesn't connect | Failure of synchronization with Xiaomi servers | Switch the region to Mi Home to China β Russia (or vice versa) |
| Devices do not respond to commands | Zigbee network breakup | Reboot all sensors (remove the batteries for 10 seconds) |
| The gateway is constantly squeaking. | Hardware malfunction of the speaker | Turn off sounds in the gateway settings or contact the service |
| In the appendix, the error "Unknown firmware" | Outdated lock. | Update your firmware manually through Mi Home β Gateway settings β Update |
πΉ Tip: If the gateway is slower after the reboot, check the Zigbee channel in the settings. Channel 11 is the default, but if there are many other smart devices nearby (for example, Philips Hue), it is better to choose channel 15 or 20 to minimize interference.
When a reboot won't help: hardware malfunctions
If none of these methods have brought the gateway back to life, it may be the hardware that's the problem, and here are some signs you should go to the service center.
- π₯ The gateway is warmer than usual (body temperature above 50)Β°C)
- β‘ The indicator does not glow at all (even after resetting)
- π Constant high-frequency whispering (whistling) from the speaker
- π§ Traces of oxidation or corrosion on the board (if the case was dismantled)
- π The gateway only works from a certain socket (a problem with the power supply unit)
πΉ What do you do:
- If the device is warranty, contact the official Xiaomi service (gateway warranty is usually 12-24 months).
- For older models (for example, Mi Home Gateway 1) it is easier to buy a new gateway - repairs can cost 70-80% of its cost.
- Before visiting the service, make a backup of smart home settings through Mi Home β Profile β Backup.
π‘
If the gateway stopped working after a thunderstorm or a power surge, do not try to turn it on again - this can aggravate the damage.
