Where to start: preparing a vacuum cleaner and smartphone for the first setup
If you buy a Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaner โ whether itโs a budget Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite or Xiaomiโs flagship Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Ultra โ you get not just a cleaning device, but a full-fledged assistant with dozens of settings. But without the right initial configuration through the official Mi Home app (or Xiaomi Home for new models), the vacuum cleaner will not reveal half of its potential. In this article, we will analyze the entire process from connecting to Wi-Fi to creating virtual walls and setting up wet cleaning โ taking into account the nuances of the firmware of 2026.
Before you start setting up, make sure that three key conditions are met:
- ๐ฑ Android smartphone 8.0+/iOS 12+ The latest version of the Mi Home app (you can download it from Google Play or the App Store) may not support new models of vacuum cleaners.
- ๐ถ Wi-Fi router with frequency 2.4 GHz (Xiaomi robots do not work with networks) 5 GHz, except for individual flagship models 2023-2026 If you have a dual-band router, temporarily turn off. 5 GHz or create a separate network for 2.4 GHz.
- ๐ Charging the vacuum cleaner at least 50%. Connect the device to the docking station on 10-15 minutes before setting up to avoid failures due to low charge.
Also check that Xiaomi servers are available in your region to connect smart devices. If the application gives an error "Server is not available", try changing the region in the Mi Account settings to "Mainland China" (but note that this may limit the functionality of other Xiaomi services).
Step 1: Connecting the vacuum cleaner to the Mi Home application
The first step is to bundle the vacuum cleaner with your Xiaomi account.
- Turn on the robot vacuum cleaner with a long press on the physical Power button (on the body), and most models will hear a voice greeting in Chinese or English.
- Open the Mi Home app and click on it"+" (Add the device) in the upper right corner. Select the category "Smart home", then "Robot vacuum cleaner".
- The app will suggest you select a model from a list. If your model is not available, select "Other" and the system will automatically identify the device.
- Follow the on-screen instructions: Confirm the flashing indicator on the vacuum cleaner (usually blue), then select your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
At this stage, two errors are possible:
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the vacuum cleaner doesnโt connect to Wi-Fi, check if your router is using it. WPA3 or 802.11r (Fast Roaming! Xiaomi robots only support WPA2-PSK. Disable advanced security settings in the router control panel.
Once the device is successfully connected, the vacuum cleaner will appear in the main menu of the app, and now you can start to set up the basic configuration, we recommend that you update the firmware of the device first, which will fix possible bugs and add new features.
- Go to the vacuum cleaner card in the app.
- Press three points"โฎ" in the upper right corner and select "Device settings".
- Tap on "Firmware Update" and follow the instructions. The update can take up to 20 minutes - do not turn off the vacuum cleaner or close the application.
โ๏ธ Checklist before first launch
Step 2: First room map and calibration
Xiaomiโs modern robot vacuum cleaners (starting with 2020 Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2) are equipped LDS-It's a ladar machine, or ToF sensors in the top models, that builds a real-time map of the room, but you have to do the initial calibration to work exactly:
1. Place the vacuum cleaner in the docking station and make sure there are no obstacles around it in the distance. 1-1.5 Meter (especially important for models with self-emptying containers).
2. In the Mi Home app, click Clean, then select Full Clean (or Map in new versions of the software) and the robot will start moving around the perimeter of the room.
3. Don't get involved first. 10-15 You have to go around all the areas you can, so you don't have to move the device manually, it'll reset the calibration.
After cleaning, a map of the room will appear in the app. If it turns out to be inaccurate (for example, walls are curved or doors are missing), follow the following steps:
- ๐ Restart mapping, having previously cleared the space of small objects (wires, shoes, toys).
- ๐ Check the height of the vacuum cleaner: if it touches carpets or rapids, raise them or use virtual walls (configure later).
- ๐ Make sure there is enough lighting in the room โ in the dark, ladar may be worse at recognizing obstacles.
For multi-mapping models (e.g. Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro), you can save several floors.
- After creating the first floor map, move the vacuum cleaner to the second floor and start cleaning.
- The application will be prompted "Save as a new card?" - confirm and Assign name (for example, "2nd floor").
- To switch between floors, use the drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the map.
What to do if the card is not saved?
Step 3: Set up cleaning areas and virtual walls
One of the most useful features of Xiaomi's robots is the ability to divide the room into zones and set virtual limits, which allows you to, for example, only clean the kitchen on a schedule or block the vacuum cleaner from accessing the children's room. Let's see how this works.
Addition of cleaning areas
1. Open the room map in the Mi Home app.
2.Click on the "Zone" icon (or "Edit" โ"Add a zone").
3. Circle the desired area on the map. The system automatically prompts the Assign name (e.g., "Kitchen", "Corridor").
4 Save the area. You can now choose it when you start cleaning or set up a separate schedule.
Virtual Walls and No-Go Zones
If there are places in your home where the vacuum cleaner should not go (for example, next to a pet bowl or flower pots), use virtual barriers:
- ๐ซ Line: draw a section that the vacuum cleaner won't cross, suitable for locking doorways.
- ๐ฅ Rectangle: creates a forbidden zone of arbitrary shape (for example, around the Christmas tree).
- ๐ด Circle: restricts access to point objects (feeder, socket on the floor).
To add a barrier:
- On the map, click "Edit" โ"Add a virtual wall".
- Select the type of barrier and draw it on the map.
- Save the changes. The barrier will remain active until you remove it.
โ ๏ธ Note: Virtual walls do not work when cleaning in the "Contour" mode or if the vacuum cleaner has lost contact with the map (for example, after manual transfer to another room.
| Type of barrier | When to use | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Line | Blocking doorways, stairs | Max. 10 meters long. |
| rectangle | Protection of areas with wires, toys | You can't put walls on. |
| Circle | Fencing of point objects (bowls, pots) | Radio not exceeding 2 meters |
| Cleaning area | Selective cleaning of individual rooms | It doesn't work in "Deep Cleaning" mode. |
Step 4: Set up your schedule and cleaning modes
Automatic cleaning is a key feature of robot vacuum cleaners, and in the Mi Home app, you can set up up to 7 different schedules for different days of the week and zones.
1. In the vacuum cleaner card, go to the tab "Schedule".
2. Press "Add" and select:
- ๐ Days of the week: indicate on which days the cleaning will be performed (for example, "Pn, Sr, Pt").
- โฐ Time: optimal time when no one is home (for example, 10:00) so that the vacuum cleaner does not interfere.
- ๐ Zones: Choose which rooms to clean (or leave the whole room").
- ๐ Cleaning mode: Quiet for night cleaning (low power, no wet cleaning); Balanced for optimal noise/quality balance; Deep for maximum suction power (suitable for carpets); Wet for floorwashing models only.
For models with support for auto-emptying of dust collectors (for example, Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop) 2 Ultra) can be specified in the schedule as the container cleaning frequency is optimal, each time the container is cleaned. 2-3 Cleaning to avoid clogging filters.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the vacuum cleaner is constantly off schedule, check your smartphoneโs energy saving settings. Some manufacturers (e.g. Xiaomi, Samsung) aggressively close the background processes, which may cause the Mi Home app to not send commands to the device. Add the app to battery optimization exceptions.
๐ก
To ensure that the vacuum cleaner does not wake you up at night, set up a "quiet" cleaning mode from 22:00 to 8:00 in the device settings ("Settings"). โ Working hours โ Night mode").
Step 5: Fine settings: wet cleaning, suction power, voice commands
After you've set up the basics, you can go to the advanced options that make cleaning even more efficient, and let's look at the most useful ones.
Wet cleaning setup
If your model supports floor washing (e.g. Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro), the following options are available in the app:
- ๐ง Water level: select "Low" for laminate, "Medium" for tile, "High" for persistent contaminants.
- ๐งน Sequence: First dry cleaning, then wet (recommended) or vice versa.
- ๐ซ Areas without washing: mark carpets or rooms where wet cleaning is not needed.
Important: after wet cleaning, it is necessary to:
- Remove and wash the cloth under running water.
- Dry it before the next use (wet cloth can become a source of unpleasant odor).
- Check the water tank for scale (especially if you use tap water).
Adjustment of suction power
You can set different power for different types of coatings:
- ๐ Hard floors (tiles, laminate): Average or Quiet power.
- ๐งต Carpets: Maximum or Deep Cleaning.
- ๐๏ธ Bedroom: Quiet mode (especially at night).
In new models (2023-2026 There's a coating autodetection function, which is the vacuum cleaner itself increases the power on the carpets. To turn it on, go to: Device settings. โ Smart cleaning โ Auto-suction.
Voice control
Xiaomi robots are compatible with Alice (Yandex), Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. To configure voice control:
- In the Mi Home app, go to Device Settings โ Voice assistants".
- Choose the right assistant and follow the instructions for the bundle of accounts.
- After setting up, you can use commands such as: "Alice, start the vacuum cleaner in the kitchen" "OK Google, return the vacuum cleaner to the base" "Alexa, turn on quiet cleaning in the living room."
๐ก
For stable operation of voice commands, make sure that the vacuum cleaner and the speaker with the assistant (for example, Yandex Station) are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Step 6: Cleaning and maintenance
To the robot vacuum cleaner lasts a long time (the warranty period of Xiaomi โ 12 months, but with proper care, the device works 3-5 You need to maintain your routines regularly, here's a checklist of key procedures:
| Component | Frequency of service | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| Main filter | Every 2 weeks | Wash under water, dry for 24 hours |
| Side brushes | Every month. | Remove hair and threads, replace them with wear |
| Main brush. | Every 3 months | Remove the hair, check the bearings |
| Sensors (ladar, sensors) | Every week. | Wash with a dry wipe from dust |
| Water tank | After every wet cleaning | Wash, dry, remove scale |
Pay special attention to cleaning sensors:
- ๐ฆ Ladar: wipe the glass with a soft napkin, and the dust on it leads to inaccurate maps.
- ๐๏ธ Infrared sensors (bottom of the case): clean with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol.
- ๐งฒ Fall sensors (under the front bumper): remove dirt, otherwise the vacuum cleaner will be "afraid" of cleaning at the steps.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the vacuum cleaner starts to move randomly, doesn't return to base or "can't see" obstacles, it's likely that the ladar or collision sensors are contaminated. Do not use abrasive materials or liquids to clean, it will damage the optical sensors.
For models with auto-emptying (for example, Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Ultra):
- Empty the main container on the base once in a while 1-2 weeks (or after notification in the appendix).
- Change the dust bag every time. 2-3 month (depending on the intensity of cleaning).
- Check the base vents - a dust-clogged turbine may overheat.
Step 7: Resolving typical problems
Even the most reliable robot vacuum cleaners sometimes fail, and let's look at some of the most common mistakes and how to fix them.
The vacuum cleaner is not returning to base
Causes and solutions:
- ๐ The base is not connected to the power supply: check the cable and socket.
- ๐ก Weak Wi-Fi signal at base: Move router closer or use signal repeater.
- ๐บ๏ธ Changed layout: start re-mapping.
- ๐งน Wheels or brushes are clogged: clean them of garbage.
The "Stuck" Error 10
The robot can get stuck on:
- High thresholds (more than 2 cm).
- Dark carpets (fall sensors are falsely triggered).
- Wet surfaces (wheels slipping).
Solution: Add a virtual wall around the problem area or use magnetic tapes (sold separately).
Wet cleaning doesn't work.
Check it out.
- ๐ง Water level in the tank (should be between the two) MIN and MAX).
- ๐งป Clean the nozzles (clean with a needle if clogged).
- ๐ Battery charge (wet cleaning requires at least 30% charge).
The vacuum cleaner does not connect to Wi-Fi
In order:
- Reboot the router.
- Make sure the network is running at 2.4 GHz.
- Reset the vacuum cleaner settings (press the Power button for 10 seconds).
- Try connecting via another network (such as a mobile hotspot).
If nothing helps, check if your router is blocking new devices from connecting (set up"AP Isolation" or "Filtration MAC-address").
