Why SMS can be blocked on Xiaomi and how to fix it

You're waiting for an important message, but it never comes? Or the confirmation codes from banks and services stopped coming? Chances are your Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO automatically blocked these SMS. MIUI aggressively filters spam, but sometimes along with advertising, it eats up useful notifications. In this article, we'll look at where to look for blocked messages, how to restore them and why it even happens.

The problem is relevant for all modern Xiaomi devices, from the budget Redmi Note 12 to the flagship Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Even after upgrading to MIUI 15 or HyperOS, the logic of the lock remains the same: the system analyzes the sender, content and even the time of sending, sometimes a false positive filter is triggered - for example, if the bank sent a code from a short number that MIUI considered suspicious.

Before you panic, check out three key places:

Method 1: Checking Spam folder in the standard Messages app

The most obvious place where blocked SMS accumulate is the built-in Spam folder in the Messages app, which is hidden by default, but easy to find:

1. Open the Messages app (an envelope icon).
2. In the upper right corner, tap three points. ⋮ → Choose Spam.
3. You will see a list of all messages that MIUI has deemed undesirable.

In this folder, you can:

• 🔄 Restore SMS – click on the message, then select Not spam.
• 🗑️ Remove it forever – if it’s really garbage.
• ⚙️ Set up the filter - on the menu ⋮ → Settings → Spam filter.

Important: Spam messages are only stored for 30 days, then automatically deleted, and if you haven't checked it in a long time, the text you need may have already disappeared.

To quickly find the confirmation code, type in the search by message (magnifying glass at the top) a keyword, such as “code” or the name of the service (Sber, Tinkoff, etc.).

Method 2: MIUI Security Settings – Spam Protection

If the Spam folder is empty, but the messages still don't come, check the global filtering settings. MIUI has a separate module that blocks SMS before they even reach the Messages app to find it:

1. Go to Settings. → PapaSSWORD & security → Spam protection (on some firmwares the path may be different: Settings) → Annexes → Application management → Protection against spam).
2. Select the Message tab.
3. Check out the list of blocked numbers and senders.

Here you can:

• ➕ Add a number to the whitelist – if the bank or service is permanently blocked.

On Xiaomi with HyperOS (such as Xiaomi 14 or Redmi K70), the path may be slightly different:

Settings → Applications → Application Management → Messages → Permissions → Spam Filtering

Method 3: Lock Log in the Security App

Another place where you can track missing text messages is the Security system app, which maintains a separate lock log, which sometimes contains information that is not available in Messages.

1. Open the Security app.
2. Go to Privacy Protection or Permissions Management (name depends on MIUI version).
3. Select the Block Log or Message Filter.
4. Check out the list of blocked SMS and senders.

If the log is empty but you suspect that messages are being blocked, try:

• 🔄 Reset filtering settings – in the same section, find the option “Reset».
• 📱 Check the permissions for the Messages app: Settings → Annexes → Communications → Permits → Turn on all the switches.
• 🔍 Use a log search – enter the sender number or keyword.

Method 4: Third-party apps – Truecaller, Google Messages, and others

If you're using an alternative, rather than a standard Messages app, like Google Messages, Truecaller or Textra, the algorithm for finding blocked SMS will be different.

Attention! Third-party applications may conflict with MIUI system filtering, for example, if both Truecaller and MIUI block the same message, it may disappear without a trace.

⚠️ Disable duplicate filtering: Select one spam blocking application (either system or third party) and disable this feature in another.

Method 5: Checking through USSD-communications team

If you've exhausted all options on your phone, but the messages still don't come, the problem may be on the mobile operator's side. Some carriers (like MegaFon or Beeline) block mass mailings at the network level.

1. Call your operator’s short support number: MTS: 0890 Beeline: 0611 MegaFon: 0500 Tele2: 611

Ask if SMS messages are blocked from short numbers (e.g. from banks).

Ask to disable the Spam Protection service (if it is connected).

Importantly, if the operator blocks messages, they can't be restored -- they just don't reach your phone, and the only way out is to turn off the filtering on the operator's side.

If text messages don't come from only certain numbers (e.g. banks), check the operator's settings first, not the phone's. Often the problem lies in network filters, not MIUI.

How to prevent SMS blocking in the future

To ensure that important messages are not lost, set up Xiaomi in advance:

1. Add numbers to whitelist: Open messages → ⋮ → spamming → Settings → Whitelist, add bank, service and important contacts.
2. Turn off aggressive filtering: C Settings → PapaSSWORD & security → Spam protection disable the option of Message Filtration.
3. Use alternative messengers: Install Google Messages and turn off filtering in it: Settings → Spam Protection → Off.

Check the Spam folder regularly:
