Wirelessly streaming a screen from a laptop to a Xiaomi TV via Wi-Fi opens up new possibilities for watching movies, presentations or games on a large screen without unnecessary wires. However, many users face problems: the TV can not see the laptop, then lags arise, then sound disappears. In this article, we will analyze all the current ways of connecting β from built-in Miracast to specialized applications like Steam Link β and also explain how to fix typical errors.
Xiaomi TVs (Mi TV A, Mi TV P1, Mi TV Q2, etc.) are unique in that they support multiple wireless protocols, but not all of them work equally stable. For example, DLNA is suitable for video but can not cope with games, and Miracast can slow down when Wi-Fi signal is weak. We tested all methods on models from 2020-2026 and identified those that work.
1. Preparation of Xiaomi laptop and TV for broadcast
Before setting up your wireless connection, make sure that both devices meet the minimum requirements:
- πΊ Xiaomi TV: model no older than 2018 (with Miracast support or DLNA), Updated firmware (version) MIUI TV 3.0+).
- π» Laptop: Windows 10/11 (Miracast-enabled, macOS 10.15+ (AirPlay will require additional software, or Linux with scrcpy installed.
- πΆ Wi-Fi network: a router with support for the standard 802.11ac (5 GHz) for minimum delays, connection speed at least 300 Mbps.
If your Xiaomi TV doesnβt see a laptop in the list of available devices, check first:
- Is the TV firmware updated (path: Settings β About TV β System Update)?
- Is Miracast on your TV (Settings β Connection and Sharing β Wireless Display)
- Does your laptop support Wi-Fi Direct (checked through Device Manager β Network Adapters)
Important: If youβre using Windows 11, pre-disable Automatic Color Control in screen settings β it can cause artifacts when broadcasting.
Method 1: Miracast - built-in wireless broadcasting
Miracast is a wireless image standard that all modern Xiaomi TVs and Windows laptops support, and the main advantage of the method is that there is no need for additional programs, but there are also disadvantages: audio delays (up to 200 ms) and FPS drops when Wi-Fi signal is weak.
Instructions for Windows 10/11:
- On Xiaomi TV, open Settings β Connection and Sharing β Wireless display and activate the option.
- On your laptop, press Win + K (or Win + P β Connect to a wireless display).
- In the list of available devices, select the name of your TV (e.g., Xiaomi-MiTV-P1-1234).
- Confirm the connection on both devices.
If the TV doesnβt appear on the list, try:
- π Reboot the router and both devices.
- π‘ Switch Wi-Fi on TV from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz (or vice versa).
- π§ Update network adapter drivers on your laptop (via Device Manager).

β οΈ Note: On some Xiaomi models TV (Like Mi. TV 4A 2018) Miracast only works when connected to a router β live Wi-Fi Direct broadcast may not be supported.
Method 2: DLNA β broadcast media files without screen duplication
DLNA allows you to transfer only media files (video, music, photos) to your Xiaomi TV, but not the entire screen of your laptop, which is suitable for watching movies or listening to music, but not for games or working with documents, but DLNA is less demanding for Wi-Fi speeds and less slows down.
How to set up:
- On your TV, turn on DLNA in the Settings menu β Connection and Sharing β Local Area Network (DLNA).
- On your laptop, install the server program: For Windows: Serviio or Plex Media Server. For macOS: Kodi or VLC (mode DLNA-server).
Add folders with media files to the program library.
Media player
Video
| Programme | Supported formats | Max, permission. | Delay. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serviio | MKV, MP4, AVI, FLAC, JPG | 4K@30fps | ~50 ms. |
| Plex | MP4, MOV, MKV, AAC, PNG | 1080p@60fps | ~100 ms. |
| VLC | Any (transcoding) | 1080p@30fps | ~150 ms |
Critical detail: if MKV video with H.265 codec (HEVC) slows down, turn on the transcoding option in the server settings - Xiaomi budget TVs (for example, Mi TV A2) do not always cope with hardware decoding.
4. Method 3: Steam Link - for gamers
If you want to stream games from a laptop to a Xiaomi TV, standard protocols like Miracast won't work because of the high latency, the solution is the Steam Link app, which is optimized for streaming games. The downside is that you need a powerful laptop (a video card is no weaker than the NVIDIA GTX 1050 or AMD RX 560) and a stable 5GHz Wi-Fi.
Step-by-step:
- Install Steam on your laptop and Steam Link on your TV (available on Google Play for Mi TV on Android TV).
- Connect the gamepad to the TV (by Bluetooth or USB).
- Launch Steam on your laptop, go to Settings β Remote Play and turn on the option.
- On the TV, open the Steam Link, select your laptop and connect.

If the game is slowing down, try turning on the βOptimize for Speedβ mode in the Steam Link settings instead of βOptimize for Qualityβ.
5. Method 4: AirPlay for macOS (with workarounds)
Xiaomi TVs donβt support AirPlay out of the box, but there are two workarounds:
- Using Apple TV: Connect Apple TV 4K to TV HDMI and broadcast screen with MacBook in the standard way (Center β Screen Transfer).
- Through emulator: Install AirScreen (from Google Play) or ApowerMirror (requires USB-OTG connection for minimal delays) on your TV.
For the second option:
- Download AirScreen to your TV and launch the app.
- On MacBook, open System Settings β Monitors β Duplicate the screen.
- Select from the list of Xiaomi-TV-AirScreen devices.
β οΈ Note: When using AirScreen, audio can be transmitted with a delay of up to 300 ms. To sync, install Soundflower on your MacBook and redirect the audio stream directly to the TV.
6. Method 5: Direct connection via USB-C/HDMI (If Wi-Fi is not working)
If wireless methods are not stable, and wires are not frightening, use USB-C β HDMI This is an adapter that guarantees minimal delays (10β20 (m) and maintains permission up to 4K@60fps. Suitable for laptop models with port USB-C/Thunderbolt (For example, MacBook Pro, Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro).
What you need:
- π adapter USB-C β HDMI (Recommended models with DisplayLink chip for stability).
- πΊ Cable HDMI 2.0 (for) 4K) or HDMI 1.4. 1080p).
How to connect:
- Connect the laptop and adapter with a USB-C cable.
- Connect the adapter to the TV via HDMI.
- On the TV, select the signal source (HDMI 1/2).
- On your laptop, press Win + P and select Duplicate or Expand mode.
Why can't the TV see the laptop through HDMI?
7.Typical errors and their solutions
Even with the right setup, there can be problems, and here are the most common ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| TV doesn't see laptop in Miracast | There is no Wi-Fi Direct support on the router | Connect both devices to the same 5GHz network or use the hotspot on your smartphone |
| There's sound, there's no image. | Incompatible Video Codec | Change the screen resolution on your laptop to 1920Γ1080@60Hz |
| Lags and brakes in games | Low speed Wi-Fi | Connect your laptop to the router via cable, and leave the TV on Wi-Fi |
| DLNA application does not see files | Incorrect access rights to folders | In server settings (e.g., Serviio), add the folder manually. |
If none of the methods work, check:
- π Does the broadcasting antivirus block (turn off Windows Defender or Kaspersky for the duration of the test).
- π‘ Is the Wi-Fi channel overloaded (use the Wi-Fi Analyzer app to check congestion).
- π Do not need to reset network settings on the TV (Settings) β System system β Resetting the network).
π‘
For minimal delays when broadcasting games, use the combination: laptop over Ethernet + TV over Wi-Fi 5 GHz + Steam Link with a bitrate of 15-20 Mbit / s.
