Why Standard Swipe Is Sometimes Not Enough
Xiaomiβs MIUI-based smartphones offer several ways to end a phone conversation, from a classic swipe to hidden gestures and hardware buttons. However, many users face situations where the usual way does not work: the screen is locked, the sensor is glitching, or the call is via a VoIP application (such as WhatsApp or Telegram), in which knowledge of alternative methods saves time and nerves.
In this article, we'll look at all possible scenarios, from basic actions to emergency decisions, when the phone doesn't respond to touch. MIUI (12 to 14) and models with AMOLED-You'll also learn how to avoid an accidental call reset and what to do if the phone freezes after interrupting the callΒ».
Method 1: Classic swipe up or down
The most obvious method is to swipe across the screen while you're calling, and in MIUI, the direction of the swipe depends on the firmware version and the smartphone model:
- π± MIUI 12β14: Swipe up the green tube (to complete) or down the red tube (on some models).
- π Old versions (MIUI 11 and below: swipe left or right on the pipe icon.
- π― Redmi Note and POCO: on some devices, double tap on the screen (setting is included in Settings) β Special facilities β Gestures).
If the swipe doesn't work, check:
- Screen cleanliness β greasy spots or protective glass can block the sensor.
- Gesture settings in Settings β Screen β Lock screen gestures.
- Sensor operation: Try swiping your finger over another part of the screen.
π‘
On smartphones with AMOLED-screens (e.g. Xiaomi 13 or Redmi) K60) Swipe may not work if you touch the edge of the display β try swiping closer to the center.
Method 2: Volume and power buttons
When the touch screen doesn't respond, physical buttons come to the rescue, and MIUI has a call-ending function that uses these buttons to help you:
- π Volume down button: Press and hold 1-2 seconds (works on most models after 2020).
- π Power button: a single press interrupts the call to Xiaomi 11T, 12 Pro and the new Redmi Note (the feature appeared in the MIUI 13).
- β οΈ Button combination: Older models (e.g. Redmi 9) may need to hold power + Increase volume 3 seconds.
Note that on some firmware, these buttons, by default, turn off the microphone, rather than reset the call.
- Go to Settings β System applications β Phone β Call settings.
- Select the Call Control buttons.
- Set the βComplete Callβ action to the desired button.
Method 3: Voice commands (Google Assistant)
If you have your hands full or your screen is not available, you can use the voice assistant.
- Activate Google Assistant with the phrase βOK Googleβ or hold the Home button (on models with a physical button).
- Tell one of the teams: π£οΈ Β«Complete the challengeΒ» π£οΈ Β«Hang upΒ» π£οΈ Β«Turn off the callΒ»
Important: the function only works when you are connected to the Internet and the microphone is turned on, and some models (for example, the POCO X3) may require pre-configuration:
- Open Settings β Google β Settings for apps β Search, Assistant and Voice.
- Select the Voice Assistant β Voice control.
- Enable the call management option.
Why isn't the voice command working?
Method 4: Gestures in headphones (Bluetooth and wired)
If you use wireless headphones (such as Xiaomi AirDots or Redmi Buds), you can interrupt your call directly from them:
| Model headphones | Demand-dropping gesture | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Air 2/3 | Double tap for any earpiece | It only works when you are actively connected to the phone. |
| Redmi Buds 4 | Triple touch of the touch panel | Setting up in MIUI Bluetooth β Headphone settings |
| POCO Pop Buds | Holding 2 seconds | Can be in conflict with a voice assistant call |
| Wired headphones | Answer/Completion button (one click) | Some models require retention. |
β οΈ Note: if the headphones are connected to the phone through LDAC or aptX, gestures can work with a delay of up to 1-2 seconds, in this case, it is better to use the buttons on the smartphone itself.
Method 5: Interrupt through the notification panel
If the screen is locked or does not respond to swipes during the call, try:
- Pull the notification bar down (even on a locked screen).
- Find an active call card β it usually appears at the top of the list.
- Swipe the βFinishβ button (red tube) or swipe the card to the left.
Check if the "Do Not Disturb" mode is activated"|Make sure the screen is not damaged (cracks can block the swipe)|Update the firmware to the latest version MIUI|Reset the panel settings in Settings β Annexes β Notifications-->
Method 6: Emergency termination (if the phone freezes)
In rare cases, the smartphone can freeze during the call: the screen does not respond, the buttons do not work, and the call continues.
- Forced reset: π Hold the power button. + Increase volume 10-15 seconds until the phone turns off. β οΈ Xiaomi. 12S Ultra and Redmi K50 The combination may be different: Nutrition + Turning down the volume.
Extraction SIM-map
If the call is coming through a mobile network, the physical extraction of the SIM will interrupt the connection. Use the paper clip for the tray.
β οΈ Warning: Forced reboots can cause unsaved data to be lost in open applications. SIM-Retrieval of one card does not always interrupt the call - depends on the network priority settings.
Method 7: Turn off the microphone (alternative to reset)
If you need to interrupt a conversation temporarily but not complete it (for example, to clarify something), you can turn off the microphone:
- π€ On the call screen, click the microphone icon (usually at the bottom right).
- π In some models (POCO F4, Redmi Note 11 β Power button combination + Reduce volume (single pressing).
To get the microphone back, repeat the action. This method is useful if:
- You want to say something behind the scenes without interrupting the connection.
- It is noisy and you donβt want the other person to hear any sounds.

Turning off the microphone does not complete the call, but saves battery power, since the phone does not transmit audio stream.
