Forgot your home Wi-Fi password and the router is in an awkward place to look at the sticker? Or do you need to connect a new device but the password is not saved in the cloud? On Xiaomi Redmi smartphones, there are several ways to extract the saved password from the network β even without superuser rights (root). In this article, we will analyze all the current methods for modern versions of MIUI 12/13/14 and Android 10-14, including hidden functions and circumventing system restrictions.
Importantly, not all of these work on the new Redmi Note 12/13, Redmi 10C/11 Prime or Xiaomi 14 flagships because of tighter security policies. We tested the instructions on MIUI Global and MIUI Europe firmware, the results are summarized in the compatibility table below. If your smartphone is not rooted, start with the simplest method (via Wi-Fi Settings), and if it doesn't work, move on to alternatives.
We warn you beforehand that some actions require access to the file system or installing third-party applications, which can violate warranty or cause failures if you do everything wrong. On phones with an unlocked bootloader and custom firmware (LineageOS, Pixel Experience), passwords are often stored in the open, they can be extracted without additional manipulation.
1. Standard method: viewing password through Wi-Fi settings (MIUI 12β14)
The most obvious and safe method is to use the built-in function. MIUI Unfortunately, it doesn't work on all devices: since Android 10, Google has banned displaying passwords in plain form without additional authentication. However, on some Redmi models (especially with firmware for China or other devices). MIUI Europe) this option remains.
To check if the method is available on your phone:
- π± Open the Settings app (cog icon).
- π Go to the Wi-Fi section (or Connections) β Wi-Fi on new versions).
- π Find your network in the list and tap it by its name (donβt connect again!).
- ποΈ If you see a password line with dots, click on the right-hand glazik to display the characters.
If you see a password instead of a Save or a field to enter, it means the function is disabled, in which case you move to the next method. On some firmware (for example, MIUI 13.0.6 for the Redmi Note 10 Pro), the password can be copied through long pressing on the field, even if it is hidden by asterisks.
β οΈ Note: On phones with corporate profiles (for example, if the device was issued by the employer) or enabled the function Data Protection in Settings β This is not going to work for privacy, and it's not available on Android 13 devices.+, unless debugging is included USB.
2. Extracting password through file wpa_supplicant.conf (rootless)
All saved networks and their passwords are stored in a system file. wpa_supplicant.conf. You can access it without root rights, but you will need a computer and enabled debugging. USB. This method works on most Redmi models, except those where the file system is encrypted (e.g. Redmi). K50 s MIUI 14).
Step-by-step:
- Put the debugging on. USB: π§ Go to Settings. β The phone. π 7 times tap on the line version MIUI, to activate the Developer Mode. π Back to Settings β Additionally. β For developers. π Activate the debugging switch on USB.
- Connect your phone to your PC: π₯οΈ Use the original USB-Type C cable (cheap cables may not transmit data). π On the phone, select the file transfer mode (MTP). β Confirm the permission to debug on the smartphone screen.
- Download and install. ADB: π Download Platform Tools from Google. π Unpack the archive into the root of the disk C:\ (path should not contain Cyrillic!). π±οΈ Run the Command Prompt on behalf of the administrator and type:
cd C:\platform-tools
adb devicesIf the device appears in the list, you can continue.
Remove the password file:
adb pull /data/misc/wifi/WifiConfigStore.xml C:\wifi_passwords.xmlOr for older versions of Android:
adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf C:\wifi_passwords.confFind the password in the file:
- π Open the downloaded file with a notebook or Notepad++.
π‘
If MiXplorer can't see the system folders, try restarting your phone and trying again, sometimes disabling MIUI Optimization in the developer settings helps.
4. Obtaining root rights to access passwords (advanced method)
If none of the above methods worked, all that remains is unlocking the bootloader and obtaining root rights. This will give full access to system files, but will void the warranty and can lead to unstable phone operation. On new Xiaomi models (for example, the Redmi Note 12 Pro+), the process is complicated due to the protection of Anti-Rollback.
Step-by-step instructions for Xiaomi Redmi:
- π Unlock the loader: π Go to Xiaomi and get permission to unlock (can take up to 72 hours). π± Connect your phone in Fastboot mode (clip the power supply) + Loudness down when switched on). π₯οΈ Start the Mi Unlock Tool and follow the instructions.
- π§ Install custom recovery (TWRP): π₯ Download the version. TWRP For your model from the official website. π» In the command line, do: fastboot flash recovery twrp.img fastboot boot twrp.img
- π οΈ Get root rights: π Download Magisk from GitHub. π V TWRP file Magisk.zip. π Reboot the phone.
- π Find the password: π Open MiXplorer or Root Explorer. π Move to the /data/misc/wifi/. π Open up. WifiConfigStore.xml And find a line with psk.
β οΈ Attention: On phones with MIUI 14 Android 13+ Once you get root, you can activate DM-Verity protection, which will lock the device. To avoid this, install the module immediately after you get Magisk firmware. Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt.
What to do if the root phone does not turn on?
5. Alternative methods: if nothing has worked
If all methods are useless, radical or workarounds remain:
- π Reset router: Press the Reset button on the back of the router (hold 10-15 seconds). Password reset to factory (indicated on the sticker).
- π‘ Connection through WPS: If the router supports WPS, press the button on it, and on the phone select Connect through WPS wifi-based.
- π¬ Request from the provider: Call in support of your Internet service provider (for example, Rostelecom, Beeline) and ask to recall the password from the router (you will need to name the data of the contract).
- π₯οΈ View on another device: If a Windows laptop is connected to the same network, the password can be found through the Control Panel β Network control centre β Wireless network β Properties β Security.
