Xiaomi Redmi smartphones are some of the most popular devices on the market due to their combination of price and functionality. But even owners of the flagship Redmi Note 12 Pro+ or the budget Redmi 10A models face unexpected consumption of mobile Internet. The reasons range from background app updates to hidden traffic consumption by advertising SDKs. In this article, we will examine all the official and hidden ways to check the consumption of mobile data on MIUI, including setting limits and analyzing consumption by application.
The feature of MIUI firmware (versions 12-14) is built-in traffic monitoring tools that often go unnoticed. For example, real-time traffic allows you to track data consumption with an accuracy of a megabyte, and the Limit Warning automatically blocks the Internet when you reach a predetermined threshold. But there are pitfalls: some system processes (such as com.miui.system) can consume traffic bypassing accounting. We will show you how to identify such βinvisibleβ consumers and limit their activity.
1. Standard method: the menu "Mobile network" in MIUI
The most obvious method is to use the built-in MIUI settings. It is suitable for all Redmi models, including the Redmi 9T, Redmi Note 11 and the new Redmi 13C. The interface may vary slightly depending on the firmware version, but the overall logic is maintained.
To open up the statistics:
- Go to Settings (the gear icon on the main screen).
- Select a section SIM-Maps and mobile networks (or Mobile Network in older versions).
- Stick on the active. SIM-card (if two of them are).
- Click Use of Mobile Traffic.
Here you'll see:
- π Current month consumption schedule (by day).
- π± List of applications, sorted by traffic consumption (from more to less).
- β οΈ System processes (e.g., Android System or MIUI Daemon), which can consume data in the background.
Note that MIUI resets statistics on the 1st of each month by default. If your tariff has a different cycle (for example, the 15th), be sure to change the reset date manually - we will explain this in the next section.
π‘
If you see an unknown high-consumption process in the app list (e.g. com.sec.android.app.launcher), it could be a virus. Check the device with an antivirus (e.g. Dr.Web or built-in Security from Xiaomi).
2. Setting up limits and traffic warnings
MIUI allows you to set a strict limit on mobile Internet, after which data transmission will be automatically disabled, which will save you from unexpected write-offs if you use a tariff with limited traffic (for example, 10 GB per month).
How to set the limit:
- Open the Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks β [Yours. SIM] β Using mobile traffic.
- Activate the switch Set the data limit.
- Enter the limit value in megabytes (for example, 10240 for 10 GB).
- Click Set a warning and set a threshold (e.g. 80% of the limit) at which the system will show a notification.
Important nuances:
- π The limit is automatically reset according to the date specified in the settings. To change it, tap on the current date (for example, the 1st day of each month) and select the desired day.
- π΅ When you reach the limit, mobile Internet will shut down completely, but Wi-Fi will remain active, so to turn the data back on, you have to go to the settings and manually reset the limit.
- π Some apps (like WhatsApp or Telegram) may ignore system restrictions if they have administrator rights. β Annexes β Permits β Special access.
3. Hidden Tools: Traffic Savings Mode and Background Data
If mobile internet is consumed too quickly, background processes may be to blame. MIUI offers two tools to control them: Traffic savings and Background data restriction.
Saving traffic reduces data consumption by:
- π Limitations of Automatic Application Updates.
- π₯ Blocking download media files in instant messengers (photos, videos, voice messages) without Wi-Fi.
- π Suspend syncing accounts (such as Google or Mi Account) in the background.
To activate the mode:
- Go to Settings β Connections and Sharing β Traffic Savings.
- Turn on the switch to save mobile traffic.
- In the Applications section, select the programs for which you want to limit background activity.
Background data restriction works differently: it completely blocks Internet access for applications when they're folded, a radical method, but effective for saving.
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select the app you want (like Facebook or TikTok).
- Tap Mobile Data and activate Ban Background Data.
Which apps are most likely to βstealβ traffic?
Advanced monitoring: traffic analysis applications
The built-in MIUI tools are not always accurate: they may not take into account VPN traffic, some system processes or data consumed in roaming.
| Annex | Features | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| GlassWire | Real-time traffic visualization, blocking suspicious connections, notifications of new connections. | A premium version for advanced functions. |
| My Data Manager | Tracking traffic across apps, setting limits, supporting multiple SIM-map. | The commercial is free. |
| NetGuard | Blocking Internet access for individual applications without root rights, working through a VPN. | A complex interface for beginners. |
| Traffic Monitor | Widget on the home screen with the current consumption rate, a story by day / week. | There is no deep analysis of processes. |
Example of GlassWire configuration:
- Install the app from Google Play.
- When you first start up, grant permission to access the VPN (required to monitor all traffic).
- Go to the Usage tab β here is a data consumption graph broken down by application.
- In the Alerts section, set up notifications about exceeding the limit.
Important: Some analytics applications (like NetGuard) create local VPN-A tunnel that can conflict with the real world VPN-If the Internet stops working after installation, turn off the Internet after installation. VPN Android-based.
β Check the remaining space on the device (required) ~50MB)
β Turn off the others. VPN-applications
β Allow installation from unknown sources (if downloaded) APK)
β Remember the current traffic consumption in the built-in settings (for comparison)

5. Checking traffic through USSD-operator
If you donβt trust your smartphone or suspect that MIUI I'm not reading the traffic correctly, so check with the operator. USSD-Teams to check the balance and consumption of the Internet:
| Operator. | Team to check traffic | Team to check balance |
|---|---|---|
| MTS | *100*1# or *111*105# | *100# |
| Beeline | *102# | *102# |
| MegaFon | *105*0# or *558# | *100# |
| Tele2. | *155*1# | *105# |
| Yota | *104# | *100# |
How to use it USSD-team:
- Open the phone app on Redmi.
- Enter the command (for example, *100*1# for MTS) and press the call button.
- Wait for SMS with traffic flow information (usually within 1-2 minutes).
Compare the operator's data with the MIUI statistics, and if the difference is greater than 10-15%, it is possible to:
- π‘ It's working on the device. VPN or proxy that encrypts traffic (and MIUI He doesn't count).
- π There was a failure of the counter in the firmware (will help reboot or reset statistics).
- π Rounding up (rounding up traffic, e.g. 1.1 MB counts as 2 MB).
π‘
Operator data is always a priority over smartphone statistics. If the difference is significant (more than 20%), contact the provider support - there may be a technical error in the billing.
6.Resetting traffic statistics and troubleshooting
Sometimes the mobile traffic counter in MIUI Β«It freezes" or shows incorrect data. This can happen after a firmware update, reset or change. SIM-To fix the problem:
Method 1: Manual resetting of statistics
- Go to Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks β [Yours. SIM] β Using mobile traffic.
- Slip on the three dots in the top right corner and select Reset statistics.
- Confirm the action.
Method 2: Cleaning the cache of system applications
If the reset did not help, clear the cache of the services responsible for traffic accounting:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Click on three dots in the corner and select Show System Processes.
- Find and clear the cache for: Settings (com.android.settings) Phone services (com.android.phone) MIUI System (com.miui.system)
Reboot your smartphone.
Method 3: Testing for viruses
If traffic is being consumed unnecessarily quickly, even when you are not using the internet, check your device for malware:
- Install an antivirus (such as Kaspersky or Malwarebytes).
- Run a deep scan.
- Pay attention to applications with administrator rights (Settings β Passwords and Security β Application Permissions β Special Accesses β Device Administrators).
For models with MIUI 14 (for example, Redmi Note 12 Pro+), the Intelligent Traffic Control feature is available:
- Go to Settings β Connections and Sharing β Traffic Savings.
- Activate Intellectual Control.
- The system will automatically limit background activity for underutilized applications.
