You suddenly received a notification from an operator about exceeding the Internet traffic limit, but you are sure that you have hardly used mobile Internet? Or just want to control the consumption of megabytes on your Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO? In this article, we will analyze all the available ways to check traffic spent, from built-in MIUI tools to third-party applications and services of mobile operators.
Traffic control is important not only for saving money, but also for security, for example, a sudden spike in consumption can signal malware in the background, we will show you how to track the flow of each application, adjust the warnings about the limit, and even restore statistics for the past months, and if the built-in MIUI tools seem insufficient, we will share proven alternatives.
1. Check traffic through MIUI settings
The fastest way is to use the built-in MIUI traffic meter, which works on all modern Xiaomi models, including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 and Mi 11. Data is collected automatically, but its accuracy depends on the correct setting.
To open up the statistics:
- Go to Settings. → SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Choose yours. SIM-card (if there are several).
- Tap on Traffic Consumption or Data Use (name depends on MIUI version).
- You will see the schedule of expenditure for the current month, broken down by day and application.
Note that the MIUI counter is automatically reset on the first day of each month, and if your plan has a different billing period (for example, from the 15th), you will have to manually reset the statistics through the Reset button in the same menu.
💡
To avoid confusion, set a reminder on your carrier’s day of reset calendar so you don’t forget to reset the meter in MIUI.
2. Set up warnings about exceeding the limit
MIUI allows you to set up automatic alerts when traffic is approaching a given threshold, which is especially useful for tariffs with a small package of Internet.
- Open the Settings. → SIM-maps and mobile networks → Traffic consumption.
- Activate the Excess Warning switch.
- Specify the traffic limit (e.g. 5GB) and the warning threshold (e.g. 80% of the limit).
- Save the settings.
Now that the consumption reaches 4GB (in our example), you will receive a notification. Unfortunately, MIUI is not able to block the Internet when the limit is exceeded - this will require third-party applications, which we will discuss below.
3. Viewing traffic by application
If the mobile Internet is leaking too quickly, it is worth figuring out which application is the main megabyte eater. MIUI It's done this way:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Traffic Statistics.
- Select the Mobile Data tab (not to be confused with Wi-Fi!).
- You will see a list of applications, sorted by the amount of traffic consumed.
Notice the apps at the top of the list: frequent "culprits" of unexpected expense:
- 📱 Social networks (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook) – especially when autoplaying videos.
- 🎮 Games (Genshin Impact, PUBG Mobile – Updates and online matches are eating gigabytes.
- 📥 Cloud services (Google Drive, Yandex.Disk) – synchronization of files in the background.
- 🔄 System updates — MIUI You can download the firmware without your knowledge.

4. Traffic check through the operator’s application
The MIUI data may be slightly different from the actual expenditure your carrier is recording, because the phone meter does not take into account the traffic consumed at the network level (for example, when roaming or some types of connections).
| Operator. | Annex | How to Watch Traffic |
|---|---|---|
| MTS | My MTS. | The Internet section → “Details” |
| Beeline | My Beeline. | The "Services" tab → "Internet" → "Statistics" |
| MegaFon | MegaFon | “My tariff” → “Internet” → “Expenses” |
| Tele2. | My Tele2. | “Balance” → “Details” → filter on the Internet |
| iota | iota | Main screen screen → internet-block» |
If you do not have the ability to install the application, check the consumption through the personal account on the operator's website or send it to the operator. USSD-request:
- 📶 MTS: *100*1# → Choose the Internet».
- 📶 Beeline: *102# → «Balance sheet information».
- 📶 MegaFon: *105*00# → wait SMS data-data.
- 📶 Television2: *155*0# → Choose "Details».
5. Third-party applications for traffic monitoring
If embedded funds MIUI Not enough, try specialized utilities, they offer advanced statistics, flexible alert settings, and even Internet locking for individual applications.-3 tested solutions:
- Internet Speed Meter Lite Shows real-time traffic flow directly in the notification bar. There is a widget for the home screen and detailed statistics by day/week/month. ✅ Pros: minimalist interface, no advertising. ❌ Cons: No background traffic blocked.
- GlassWire is a powerful tool with graphic flow visualization that can block suspicious connections and shows which servers each application uses. ✅ Pros: detection of malicious activity, history in 30 days. ❌ Cons: Part of the functions paid.
- NetGuard is an open source application that allows you to fully control network activity. ✅ Pros: does not require root rights, blocking by Wi-Fi/mobile data separately. ❌ Cons: a complex interface for beginners.
Before installing, check the reviews in Google Play – some applications may conflict with energy-saving MIUI modes. Also remember that the utility will require permission to access VPN settings (this is necessary to intercept traffic).
Install the application from the official store|Provide all requested permits|Set up the billing period (coinciding with the tariff)|Disable battery optimization for the application|Check the statistics once in a while 2-3 day-day-->
6. Resetting and calibration of the traffic counter
Sometimes the data is in MIUI They may be lost, for example, after updating the firmware or changing SIM-So in this case, the counter is showing you overvalued or undervalued values, to correct that:
- Open the Settings. → SIM-maps and mobile networks → Traffic consumption.
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Data Reset.
- Confirm the action.
Once reset, the meter starts counting from zero, and if you're using a non-standard billing period (not the 1st), set the correct start date for the month in the meter settings immediately, otherwise the statistics will be inaccurate.
💡
After resetting the meter, record the current traffic readings from the operator (via the application or USSD-So you can check the data and make sure that MIUI rightly.
If the meter continues to work incorrectly even after resetting, try:
- 🔄 Reboot the phone.
- 📱 Temporarily switch to another SIM-map.
- 🔧 Update MIUI until the latest version (some firmware had bugs with the counter).
7. Frequent problems and their solutions
Xiaomi users sometimes face unusual situations related to traffic accounting, let’s take a look at the most common cases:
⚠️ Note: If after the update MIUI The traffic meter shows astronomical numbers (e.g. 100 GB per day), most likely the calculation period settings have gone wrong.
Problem 1: Traffic is consumed when the phone is idle.
Decision:
- Check the background activity of applications in Settings → Battery → Battery use.
- Turn off auto-update apps in Google Play (settings → “App Auto Update” → “Wi-Fi Only”).
- Avoid background traffic for unnecessary programs (see Section 3).
Problem 2: The MIUI and operator data are very different.
Decision:
- Make sure that the meter settings indicate the correct billing period (which coincides with the tariff).
- Remember that MIUI does not take into account traffic consumed at the network level (e.g. when connecting to an MMSC for an MMS).
- If the difference is critical (more than 10%), contact the operator in support - it is possible that a paid service is activated on your number.
Problem 3: After the shift SIM-card counting.
Decision:
- Manually reset the meter data (see section 6).
- If it doesn’t work, try removing and adding it again. SIM-map in settings (Settings) → SIM-maps and mobile networks → Management SIM-map).
