How to block a phone number on Xiaomi: all working methods

Spam calls, annoying advertising messages or unwanted contacts can seriously spoil the mood. Xiaomi smartphone owners (including the Redmi, POCO and Black Shark lines) have several built-in tools for blocking numbers, from basic MIUI functions to hidden features of system applications. In this article, we will examine all the current methods, including those that are not written in the official instructions.

It’s important to understand that locking works differently depending on the firmware version and device model. For example, on the Xiaomi 13 Pro with MIUI 14, the call filtering algorithm is different from the one implemented in the Redmi Note 10 on MIUI 12.5. We take these nuances into account and show universal solutions that work on 90% of the brand’s devices. We also reveal little-known tricks – for example, how to lock numbers through Google Messages or set up automatic rules for SMS.

Method 1: Blocking through the standard “Phone” application

The most obvious and quickest method is to use the built-in Phone app (the handset icon), which works on all Xiaomi smartphones regardless of the MIUI version, but has a limitation: only incoming calls are blocked, and SMS will continue to arrive.

1. Open the Phone app and go to the Journal tab.
2. Find the number you want to block in the list and tap it.
3. In the contact card that opens, click on three vertical points (⋮) top-right.
4. Select the Block Number and confirm the action.

If the number is not saved in contacts, it can be blocked directly from the call log: make a long click on the call record and select Block in the menu that appears. Note: on some firmware (for example, MIUI Global), this item may be called Add to blacklist.

To quickly find a number in the log, use a search snippet (for example, enter the last 3-4 digits).

Where are the locked numbers stored? They all end up in a blacklist that can be viewed and edited.

1. Open the phone. → ⋮ → Settings → Number locking.
2. Here you will see a full list of blocked contacts with the possibility of unlocking them.

Method 2: Blocking through “Messages” (SMS and calls)

1. Open the Messages app and find a dialog with an unwanted number.
2. Slip on the avatar or contact name at the top of the screen.

MIUI 13+ has an option called Report Spam, which if activated, not only will the number be locked on your device, but will also be added to Xiaomi’s database for analysis, helping to improve the built-in spam filtering algorithms for all users.

An important caveat: if you use Google Messages instead of the standard Messages app, the lock will work differently.

1. Open the dialog with the number in Google Messages.
2. Tap it on three points (⋮) → Details.
3. Choose Block and report spam.

The lock will only be valid within Google Messages, and calls from this number will still pass, and to prohibit them, you will have to duplicate the lock through the Phone app.

Method 3: Blacklisting in Security Settings

MIUI has a separate lock-management menu hidden in the security settings, which is useful if you want to add numbers or set up rules for unknown subscribers.

1. Go to Settings → Applications → Security → Lock numbers.
2. Put it on the blacklist.
3. Press Add Add Add (+) and select the source: 📞 From the magazines – choose from the history of calls/SMS. 📇 From contacts – block the saved contact. ➕ Manually enter the number manually (specify the country code, for example) +79123456789).

Save the changes.

In the same menu, you can configure rules for unknown numbers:

• 🔕 Block unknown numbers – prohibits calls from subscribers not saved in contacts.
• 📵 Block Hidden Numbers – filters calls with a suppressed ID (e.g. Unknown or Private Number).
• ⚠️ Warning of possible spam – shows a notification if the number is marked as spam by other users.

MIUI 14 has a Smart Lock feature that automatically filters spam calls based on Xiaomi’s database. To activate it, go to Settings → Apps → Security → Number Lock → Smart Lock and switch on. This feature works in the background and does not require manually adding numbers.

Method 4: Blocking through a communications operator

If the built-in MIUI tools don't work (e.g., a spammer uses different numbers), you can lock the subscriber at the operator level, which works independently of the smartphone and blocks calls/SMS even if you change devices.

The advantage of this method is that the lock works even if the caller uses spoofing.

Method 5: Third-party applications for extended locking

If standard MIUI tools are not enough, you can install specialized applications, which offer advanced features: blocking by keywords in SMS, creating whitelists, analyzing incoming calls through the spammer database.

To set up a lock through Truecaller:

1. Install the app from Google Play.
2. When you first start, allow access to contacts and call logs.
3. Go to Settings. → Lockdown.

Third-party applications may conflict with the built-in MIUI lock. If standard functions stop working after installation, disable duplicate options in the security settings.

Important: Some applications (like Truecaller) continue to run in the background and consume battery power to optimize consumption:

1. Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management → Truecaller.
2. Choose the Battery. → Limit background activity.
3. Turn off unnecessary notifications in Notices.

How to unlock a number on Xiaomi

If you accidentally block an important contact or need to temporarily allow calls from a blacklisted number, you can do this in several ways.

1. Open the phone. → ⋮ → Settings → Number locking.
2. Find the number in the list and swipe it to the left (or tap it and select Delete).

On the firmware of MIUI 12 and later there is an alternative path:

1. Go to Settings → Applications → Security → Blacklist.
2. Select the number with a long press and select Unblock.

If the number has been blocked through Google Messages:

1. Open the application and go to ⋮ → Spam and blocked.
2. Slip on the number and select Unblock.

The lock can only be confirmed by the phone owner.
