Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones sometimes face a frightening situation: the on screen was successful, but the usual desktop with application icons did not appear. Instead, the user sees only a black background, an empty shell or a frozen image. This problem is often associated with a critical failure in the operation of the System UI component or the MIUI Launcher launcher itself. When the main menu stops responding or disappears, the device becomes almost useless, since it is impossible to run the necessary programs or enter the settings in standard ways.
Fortunately, most of the time, the problem is software-based and doesnβt require expensive repairs at the service center. Resetting the launcher through the engineering menu or safe mode allows the interface to be restored in 9 out of 10 cases without losing personal photos and contacts. However, itβs important to understand that simple reboots rarely help here, as the system tries to automatically download the damaged interface configuration file at each start.
Before we go to radical measures like a full reset to factory settings (Hard Reset), it is worth trying to revive the component responsible for displaying the desktop. In this article, we will examine in detail the algorithms of actions for various scenarios, from a situation when the screen responds to touches, to the case of a full blackout, when the phone turns into a brick with working backlight, you will learn how to use the hidden capabilities of Android to force the start of the task manager and restore access to the system.
Diagnostics: Why the main menu is missing
Understanding the cause of the failure helps you choose the right recovery method. Most often, the disappearance of the main menu on Xiaomi devices occurs after a failed firmware update or installing an incompatible launcher from third-party sources. The Android operating system tries to launch a new interface, detects a critical error in the code and, without finding a backup option, simply does not render the graphical shell. This is a security mechanism that, however, leaves the user one-on-one with a blank screen.
Another common cause is memory overflow or damage to the system application cache files. If you have been using widgets, live wallpaper or heavy themes, the likelihood of resource conflict increases significantly, in which case the com.miui.home process ends emergency immediately after launch, and the cycle repeats indefinitely.
Sometimes the problem is a conflict of newly installed applications that are embedded and require certain permissions that violate the stability of the interface, especially with memory cleaners, antiviruses or system modifiers that are not received through the official Google Play store or GetApps.
It is also important to note that on older models of smartphones with a small amount of RAM, the failure can be caused by a banal lack of resources for rendering the heavy shell of MIUI. In such cases, the system can spontaneously turn off graphic effects or completely stop launching the launcher, trying to save energy and avoid a complete freeze of the processor.
Using Safe Mode to Restore Access
If your Xiaomi phone is turned on but the menu is not displayed, the first thing to do is try to enter Safe Mode. In this state, the operating system only loads with basic drivers and standard applications, ignoring all third-party launchers and modifications, which allows you to access settings even when the normal interface is completely inoperable.
To enter safe mode on most Redmi and Poco models, a certain sequence of actions with the buttons is required, usually long-term retention of the power button or a combination of volume buttons during loading of the brand logo. The exact method depends on the version of Android and the modification of MIUI, but the principle remains the same: the system must understand that a minimalist mode of operation is required.
β οΈ Warning: In Safe Mode, the corners of the screen may be marked "Safe Mode." Don't be alarmed, that's OK. The main thing is, don't restart the device in the normal way until you've done the cleaning.
Once you log in, you'll see that the interface is simple and ascetic. Now your job is to uninstall newly installed apps or reset the problem launcher. Go to the settings section, find the app list, and clean up the data for the current desktop, and then the normal reboot will return the phone to normal mode with the restored menu.
If entering Safe Mode is not possible due to the phone not responding to taps or cyclically restarting, more advanced techniques such as connecting a keyboard or using a keyboard will have to be used. ADB-commands, if the device was previously enabled debugging USB.
Reset the launcher through the application menu (if available)
In situations where the desktop is not visible, but the notification bar is swiped from above, or if you managed to start the task manager, you can try resetting the launcher by force, you need to find the Security or Settings application in the list of running processes and try to access application management through it.
The algorithm of actions is as follows:
- π± Open your smartphone settings through the notification curtain or voice assistant.
- π Go to the Appendix section β All applications (or Application Management).
- π Find the System Launcher (may be called the System Launcher) MIUI Launcher or POCO Launcher).
- ποΈ Click the Clean Up button (Broom icon) and select Clean Up All or Reset.
Once this is done, the system will force the launcher to complete the process, and the next time you access the home screen (like pressing the Home button), Android will try to start it again, creating fresh configuration files, often instantly solving the problem of a black screen or suspended graphics.
βοΈ Checklist for launcher reset
It's worth noting that resetting the launcher will bring icons and widgets back to factory status, and all the folders you've created and customized your desktop will be lost, but your personal files, contacts and messages will remain intact, a small price to pay for regaining control of the device.
Forced reset via Recovery Mode
If the interface is completely unavailable and the phone does not respond to touch, the only option is to use the Recovery Mode, a special low-level mode built into every Xiaomi smartphone that allows you to perform system operations regardless of the operating system state.
To log in to Recovery, you usually need to turn off your phone (if it doesn't turn off, press the power button for 10-15 seconds) and then press the Volume Up + Power button combination. Hold them until the Mi logo appears, then release the power button while continuing to keep the volume. You'll see a multi-point menu controlled by volume buttons and the power button.
We're interested in the Wipe Data option on this menu, but be very careful: depending on the version of Recovery, there are two options:
| Option on the menu | What's he doing? | Impact on data |
|---|---|---|
| Wipe Data (All) | Full reset to factory settings | Deletes ALL data (photos, contacts, applications) |
| Wipe Cache | Clearing temporary system files | User data is stored |
| Reboot | A normal reboot. | No change. |
Unfortunately, in modern versions of MIUI, the option of secure cache-only cleaning (Wipe Cache) is often hidden or absent from quick access, leaving only the option of a full reset. If you select Wipe Data and confirm the action, the phone will return to the state "out of the box".
β οΈ Before confirming a reset in Recovery Mode, make sure you have a backup in the Mi Cloud or on your computer.
If the problem was in the system debris, even a full reset will be a salvation, as the phone will start to work quickly and steadily, and after downloading you will need to re-set the initial setting by logging into your Google account and Mi Account.
Using ADB to reset without losing data
For advanced users who donβt want to lose data but donβt have access to the interface, there is a method of resetting via a computer using the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) debugging bridge, which will only work if the phone has previously enabled the βDeveloper Menuβ and activated the βDebug by USBβ.
You will need to connect your phone to your PC through USB-And then, using the command line on the computer, you can send a command to clear the data of the specific package that's responsible for the menu:
adb shell pm clear com.miui.homeThis command compulsorily clears the MIUI launcher data. If you have a third-party launcher installed (for example, Nova Launcher or Google Launcher), replace the packet name with the corresponding one (for example, com.teslacoilsw.launcher). After completing the command, the phone can restart the interface itself, and the menu will appear.
What if the ADB canβt see the phone?
You can also try running the Settings app directly if it is not blocked: adb shell am start -a android.settings.SETTINGS. This will open the settings window on the phone screen, from where you can already go to managing applications and perform a launcher reset manually, as described in the previous sections.
Prevention and Configuring of Alternative Launchers
To avoid a repeat of the situation with the missing menu in the future, it is recommended to follow certain rules of operation of the MIUI system. Do not install themes and fonts from unverified sources, especially if they require superuser rights or deep modification of the system.
It is good practice to install an alternative, lightweight launcher from a reliable source, such as Nova Launcher or Lawnchair, which consumes less resources and less often causes conflicts with system updates. However, to become a mainstream one, it must be properly configured in the default App menu.
Clean the device memory regularly. When the empty space runs out, the system has no place to create temporary files to render the interface, which leads to failures. Use built-in cleaning tools, but avoid aggressive third-party "cleaners" that can delete the necessary system caches.
π‘
Periodically take screenshots of important settings or use the sync function of Xiaomi Cloud, so that in case of a reset, you can quickly restore the configuration of the phone.
Also watch for firmware updates. Often in security and stability patches, Xiaomi fixes bugs that lead to cyclical reboots and launcher crashes. Ignoring updates can leave your phone vulnerable to known bugs.

Timely system updates and the refusal to modify system files is the best guarantee of stable operation of the main menu on Xiaomi.
