Why Xiaomi Phone Boots in Safe Mode and How to Fix It
Safe Mode on Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphones is a diagnostic mode that automatically disables all third-party applications and leaves only system ones. Most often it is activated after a failed update, program conflict or mechanical damage (for example, a device crash). If your screen is illuminated with the words "Safe Mode" in the lower left corner, and most applications are no longer available, do not panic: it is not a virus or a breakdown.
The main reasons for getting into Safe Mode:
- ๐ Incorrect update MIUI โ interrupted firmware or installation error OTA-packet.
- ๐ฑ Application conflict โ especially if youโve recently installed APK source.
- ๐ Hardware problems โ damage to the power button or charging socket (for example, after moisture hits).
- โก Failure of the launcher โ if the system launcher (com.miui.home) made an error.
In 90% of cases, you can log out of Safe Mode without having to go to a service center. Below we will discuss all the working methods, from the simplest (reboot) to the advanced (reset via fastboot).
Method 1: Standard Reboot (works 70% of the time)
The most obvious and quick method is to simply reboot the device, which in most cases helps if Safe Mode was activated by accident (for example, because of button clamping).
โ๏ธ How to Reboot Xiaomi in Safe Mode
Instructions:
- Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes out.
- Wait until the phone is completely turned off (vibration will confirm the shutdown).
- Turn the device back on by holding the power button until the MIUI logo appears.
If after the reboot, the Safe Mode message has disappeared, the problem is solved. If not, move on to the next method.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the phone doesn't respond to the power button holding, don't try to pull the battery out by force (on today's Xiaomi it's non-removable). Instead, try plugging in the charger - sometimes a discharged battery blocks the reboot.
Method 2: Forced shutdown via buttons (for hung phones)
If the smartphone doesnโt respond to taps or is getting stuck on the Safe Mode screen, you can try a hardware reset, which simulates battery extraction (which is impossible to do physically on most Xiaomi models).
Sequence of action:
- Hold the power button + volume button for 20-30 seconds.
- The screen should go out and then the MIUI logo appears (this is a sign of a successful reset).
- If nothing happens, try the power button + volume reduction combination.
| Xiaomi model | Recommended combination | Retention time |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO X3/X4 | Food + Volume Up | 20-25 sec. |
| Xiaomi 12/13/14, Mix 4/5 | Food + Volume Down | 15-20 sec. |
| Redmi 9A/9C, POCO M3/M4 | Power + both volume buttons | 25-30 sec. |
If the phone still loads in Safe Mode, the cause may be sticking the power button (for example, after a fall or moisture), in which case it is necessary to disassemble the device.
Method 3: Remove the problem application (if the cause is software)
If Safe Mode is activated after you install a new app, it's probably the culprit. In Safe Mode, all third-party programs are disabled, but you can delete them through system settings.
How to find and remove the problem app:
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- In the upper right corner, click on three dots and select Show System (to see all installed programs).
- Sort apps by installation date (the โLastโ) and remove those that were installed before Safe Mode appeared.
- Reboot the phone.
Typical "culprits":
- ๐ก๏ธ Antiviruses from third-party developers (Avast, Dr.Web, 360 Security).
- ๐ฎ GameGuardian, Lucky Patcher).
- ๐ฑ Nova Launcher (Apex Launcher) โ may conflict with com.miui.home).
- ๐ง Modified APK (hacked versions of applications).
โ ๏ธ Warning: If you have removed all suspicious apps but Safe Mode remains, do not install them again โ this can lead to a bootloope (cyclical reboot).
๐ก
Before you delete an app, check its Google Play rankings. If it has less than 3 stars and a lot of complaints about โdeparturesโ or โhangsโ โ this is a clear candidate for removal.
Method 4: Reset the launcher settings (if the problem is in the MIUI shell)
Sometimes Safe Mode is activated due to a failure in the system launcher (com.miui.home), in which case it will help to reset its settings to the factory.
Instructions:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Find the Louncher app (or MIUI Launcher) and open its page.
- Click on โStorageโ โ โClear Dataโ and โClear Cacheโ.
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
After discharge:
- ๐ฑ All the labels on the main screen will be dropped.
- ๐ The widgets will disappear (they will have to be added again).
- ๐จ The theme will return to the standard.
If this method worked, but after a while the problem returned, the cause may be a damaged firmware, in which case only the firmware reflash through fastboot (mode 5) will help.

Method 5: Fastboot Firmware (Advanced Method)
If none of the previous methods worked, the most radical option is to flash through Fastboot mode.
- ๐ The phone is constantly loaded into Safe Mode.
- ๐ฑ The screen hangs on the logo. MIUI.
- โก Resetting settings doesn't help.
This will require:
- ๐ป Computer with installed Xiaomi drivers and Mi Flash Tool.
- ๐ Cable USB (preferably original).
- ๐ Firmware for your model (you can download on the official website of Xiaomi).
Step-by-step:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the power button + volume reduction before the Fastboot logo appears.
- Connect your phone to your PC and start the Mi Flash Tool.
- Select the downloaded firmware (.tgz format) and press Refresh to allow the program to detect the device.
- Press Flash and wait for the process to finish (5-10 minutes).
โ ๏ธ Attention: Firmware via fastboot deletes all data from the phone. Pre-backup through Settings โ Additionally. โ Backup (if the phone is still on).
๐ก
Fastboot is the only way to bring your phone back to life if Safe Mode is caused by corrupting system files, but it requires a computer and basic software skills.
Method 6: Completely reset your settings (if nothing helps)
If all the previous methods didn't work, then you have to reset your phone to the factory settings, which will delete all the data, but it will bring it back to work.
How to reset:
- Go to Settings โ About the phone โ Reset settings.
- Select โDelete all dataโ (or โFactory settingsโ).
- Enter a password (if required) and confirm the action.
- Wait for the process to be completed (5-15 minutes).
If the phone does not respond to touch, reset can be done through Recovery mode:
- Turn off the device.
- Press the power button + increase volume until the Recovery menu appears.
- Select โWipe Dataโ โ โWipe All Dataโ (manage by volume buttons, confirmation by power button).
- After reset, select โRebootโ โ โReboot to Systemโ.
After Hard Reset, the phone will turn on normally, but all data (photos, contacts, messages) will be deleted. If you have synced with Mi Account, some data (contacts, notes) can be restored.
