Why Xiaomiβs standard account exit doesnβt always work
Signing out of a Mi Account on Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO devices seems like a simple procedure β until you encounter errors like βI couldnβt log outβ or βPassword confirmation required.β The problem is that the manufacturer has integrated the account at the MIUI firmware level, linking it to key features, from cloud backup to device activation after a reset, which means that even after clicking βExitβ some services can continue to use the account data in the background.
It is especially difficult to leave the system for those who:
- π Buy a used smartphone with a tied someone elseβs account (the risk of blocking after resetting)
- π± Uses a device with MIUI Global or MIUI China (Different Authorization Mechanisms)
- π Updated firmware "over the air" without prior exit (account can "stick")
- π‘οΈ Enables the "Find the device" function (requires additional action)
In this article, we will look at all the current ways to exit a Mi Account in 2026, including workarounds for locked devices and phones without Internet access. Importantly, the procedure is different for MIUI 14 and newer versions - we will specify the nuances for each.
Method 1: Standard output through settings (MIUI 12β14)
This method works on most devices with up-to-date firmware, as long as you have access to your account password and the internet, and is suitable for Xiaomi 11/12/13/14, Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO F4/5/X5 and other models on MIUI 12β14.
Instructions:
- Open the Settings app (cog icon).
- Scroll down and select Xiaomi Account (or Mi Account in English firmware).
- Slip on the avatar or account name at the top of the screen.
- In the menu that opens, click Account Management β Exit.
- Confirm the action by entering the password from the Mi-account (not to be confused with the PIN-code of the lock screen!).
- Wait for the data to synchronize (it can take up to 2 minutes).
If the system requests a password again after the exit or there is an error 20035, follow the following steps:
Check your internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data)
Reset the device
Make sure you enter your password from your Mi Account, not from Google.
Update the Xiaomi Account app in Google Play-->
β οΈ Note: On some firmware (for example, MIUI China) may need to link a new one within 24 hours after logging out of your account, otherwise the device will be blocked.
Method 2: Exit through Find Device (if you have forgotten your password)
If you don't remember the Mi Account password, but you have access to the email or phone number associated with it, you can remotely log in via the Find Device web service, which is suitable for devices with the "Settings β Password & security β Find device" feature enabled.
Step-by-step:
- On your computer or other phone, open i.mi.com.
- Sign in under the same account as on your smartphone.
- In the menu on the left, select Find device.
- Your smartphone will be displayed on the map β click on it.
- In the right panel, click Sign out of Mi Account.
- Confirm the action via SMS or email.
| Conditions | The result | Additional action |
|---|---|---|
| The device is connected to the Internet | The exit will occur within 1-5 minutes | Reboot your smartphone |
| No connection to the network | The command will be executed at the first connection | Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile internet |
| The "Find the device" function is disabled | The method won't work. | Use Method 3 or 4 |
| Account not confirmed by email/SMS | Identity confirmation required | Restoring access to your account via account.xiaomi.com |
If after the remote exit, the smartphone still requests a password when turned on, this means that the account was linked to the bootloader. In this case, a complete reset via Fastboot (see Method 5).

Before using Find Device, make sure that your smartphone has geolocation and mobile data enabled, which will speed up the exit command.
Method 3: Reset via Recovery Mode (without password)
This method is suitable for devices where standard output is not possible due to:
- π Forgotten password from Mi-account
- π΅ Internet absence (no way to confirm exit)
- π System freezes when trying to exit
Warning: Recovery reset will delete all data on the device, including photos, contacts and apps.If encryption is enabled on the smartphone, you may need to enter a password after the reboot.
Instructions:
- Turn off your smartphone.
- Press the button combination: For most models: Volume up + Power For POCO F1/F2/F3: Volume down + Power For Xiaomi Mi 10/11 Ultra: Volume up + Volume down + Power

β οΈ Attention: On some firmware (MIUI China) after reset via Recovery, the device may require you to enter the data of the previous Mi-account. If you do not know them, the smartphone will become a βbrickβ β you will need to unlock through Fastboot (see Method 5).
What to do if you ask for an old account after a reset?
Method 4: Exit through ADB (for advanced users)
The Android Debug Bridge (ADB) method allows you to log out without resetting your account, but requires USB debugging and computer access, suitable for MIUI 13/14 and devices with an unlocked bootloader.
What you need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with Windows/Linux/macOS
- π USB-cable (original)
- π¦ Installed drivers Xiaomi and ADB Tools
- π§ Included debugging by USB (Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI β 7 times to tap β Additionally. β For developers β Debugging by USB)
Exit teams:
adb shell pm clear com.xiaomi.account
adb shell am start -n com.xiaomi.account/.ui.AccountActivity
adb shell input text "your password from mi_account"
adb shell input keyevent 66If USB debugging is not enabled, you can try activating it via Fastboot:
fastboot oem unlock-go
fastboot rebootβ οΈ Attention: Use ADB On devices with a locked bootloader (bootloader) can cause the Anti-Rollback protection to work and the smartphone to be completely locked. Before executing commands, check the bootloader status via fastboot oem device-info.

ADB-The method only works if the debugging USB It was turned on before the device was locked, and if the smartphone is already locked, this method will not help.
Method 5: Unlocking via Fastboot (for locked devices)
If, after a reset or failed exit, the smartphone requires the data of the previous Mi-account, and you do not know them, the only official way to unlock is to use the Mi Unlock Tool.
- π₯οΈ Windows computer 7/10/11
- π Original. USB-cable

- π Purchase data (IMEI, serial)
Step-by-step:
- Download the Mi Unlock Tool and install it on PC.
- Turn off your smartphone and put it into Fastboot mode: Press Volume Down + Power for 10 seconds. Connect the device to your computer.
Mi Unlock Tool
Follow the instructions of the program. During the device check phase, a waiting message may appear (e.g., "Wait 168 hours").
Mi Flash Tool
| Model of the device | Waiting period for unlocking | Probability of success |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 12/13/14, Redmi Note 11/12 | 7 days | 90% |
| POCO F4/5, Xiaomi 11T | 14 days | 85% |
| Redmi 9/10, POCO X3 | 30 days | 70% |
| Devices 2019 and older | Immediately or 72 hours. | 95% |
If the Mi Unlock Tool is a Couldnβt unlock or Device not supported error, it can mean:
- πΉ Device is linked to another account (proof of purchase required).
- πΉ The bootloader is already unlocked, but the firmware is damaged (needs flashing).
- πΉ The model does not support unlocking (e.g. some Redmis for the Chinese market).
π‘
Before unlocking via Fastboot, take a screenshot of the screen with IMEI (type *#06#) and the serial number (in settings or on the box).
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
Even if you follow the instructions correctly, users face typical problems.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Couldn't verify device (in Mi Unlock Tool) | The device is not tied to the account you are trying to unlock. | Sign in under the account that was on your smartphone |
| Mi Account Locked After Resetting | The account was linked to the bootloader (bootloader) | Use the Mi Unlock Tool or contact the service |
| Error 20035 on exit | Problems with synchronization of Xiaomi servers | Check the internet, restart the device, try again in 30 minutes |
| After the account is released, the account remains in the settings. | Incomplete synchronization or application cache | Clear the Settings cache β Applications β Application Management β Xiaomi Account β Storage β Clear the cache |
If none of the methods helped and the device is locked, there are two options:
- Official appeal in support of Xiaomi with confirmation of purchase (check, warranty card, box with IMEI).
- Contact the service center for firmware through EDL-mode (cost ~ 2000-4000 rubles).
In some cases, the lock can be bypassed through the test menu (#4636##), but this method only works on older firmware (MIUI 10β11).
