Logging out of a Google account on a Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 smartphone is a procedure that every user faces when selling a device, changing a profile or fixing sync errors. Despite the apparent simplicity, many Redmi owners face unexpected difficulties: the system can request a password from a previous account, there is an error “Factory Reset Protection” (FRP) is required to enter data. In this article, we will analyze all the current ways to log out of a Google account on Redmi Note 9, including bypassing typical errors and restoring access without losing data.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 (M2003J15SC/M2003J15SS) features a hybrid MIUI firmware, where Google’s settings are integrated into both the standard Android menu and the branded Mi Account sections. This creates confusion: users try to delete an account through Settings → Accounts, but forget to untie it in Mi Cloud, which leads to problems. We will show you how to do it correctly and without consequences, and what to do if the phone requires the data of the old owner after a reset.
Important: If you plan to sell or transfer Redmi Note 9, logging out of your Google account is just the first step.To completely clean the device, you will need to reset to factory settings (see section 5). Failure to comply with this rule can lead to the blocking of the new owner through FRP.
1. Standard way: exit through Android settings
The most obvious method is to use the built-in MIUI tools. This is suitable if you remember the password from the account and the phone is not blocked. The instructions are relevant for the Redmi Note 9 on MIUI 12-14 (Android 10-12).
Open the Settings menu (the gear icon on the home screen) and follow the steps:
- Go to Accounts and Sync (or Passwords and Security → Accounts in new versions of MIUI).
- Slip on the Google line and a list of linked profiles will open.
- Select the account you want (if there are more than one) and click on the three dots in the upper right corner and click Delete account.
- Confirm the action by entering the pattern lock, PIN-code.
Once deleted, the system will suggest you save backups to your device. If you plan to reset your phone, choose Delete Everything. Otherwise, you can leave local copies (they will remain in the /MIUI/backup/AllBackup folder).

2. Alternative method: through the Users menu
On the Redmi Note 9 with Android 11+, there is a hidden multiplayer feature that can be used to log out of a Google account, which is useful if the standard deletion does not work due to sync errors.
Instructions:
- Open Settings → System → Additional → Multiplayer mode.
- Activate the Guest option or create a new user (password confirmation from the device is required).
- Restart your phone and log in to the guest profile.
- Return to Settings → Accounts and delete the main Google profile (now the system will allow you to do this without errors).
- Remove the guest profile and restart the device.
This method bypasses the limitations of MIUI, which sometimes block the deletion of an account from your main profile. After the procedure, check that there is no mention of an old account in Settings → Google → Device.

3. Removal of the Mi Account Reference (required!)
On the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, logging out of the Google account does not cancel the binding to the Mi Account - these are two different authentication systems. If you do not delete the Mi profile, after resetting the device, the new owner will see a request to enter data from the old Xiaomi account.
To completely untie the device:
- Go to Settings → Mi Account (the icon with the Xiaomi logo).
- Tap on the profile avatar → Exit.
- Confirm the action by entering a password from Mi Account (not to be confused with a password from Google!).
- Return to Settings → About Phone → All settings and click Reset Settings → Delete all data.

⚠️ Note: If you forget your Mi Account password, restore it via account.xiaomi.com before resetting your phone. After a hard reset, it will be extremely difficult to unlock Redmi Note 9 without your account data (you will need to contact the service center).
4.What to do if the phone requires the old account information after reset (FRP)
If you bought a Redmi Note 9 on hand and after resetting you see a screen that requires you to enter the data of the previous owner, this means that the device is protected by Factory Reset Protection (FRP).
- 🔑 You have access to the previous owner’s mail/phone (you can request an unlock code).
- 📱 You can contact the seller and ask them to remove the device from the list of trusted in Google.
- 🛠️ You have a check or warranty card (for official unlocking in the Xiaomi service).
If neither option is right, there are two options:
- Official: Contact the Xiaomi service center with documents on the phone (the cost of unlocking is from 1500) ₽).
- Informal: Use FRP-viapass ADB or special firmware (risk of "bricking" of the device!).

If the seller refuses to help with unlocking, demand a refund - selling a phone with an active phone. FRP-protection is a violation of Art. 454 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation ("Defects of the Goods").
5. Completely reset your phone before selling
Even after you log out of your Google and Mi accounts, Redmi Note 9 still has traces of your activity: app cache, files in the DCIM/.thumbnails folder, instant messenger data, to completely clean the device:
- Make a backup of important data (see checklist in section 1).
- Go to Settings → About Phone → Backup and Reset → Reset settings.
- Choose Delete all data and confirm the action.
- After the reboot, the phone will suggest setting it up as new.Do not connect to Wi-Fi at this stage - first check that the FRP lock screen does not appear.
If you plan to keep your phone but want to start with a clean slate, after resetting:
- 🔄 Do not restore data from backup MIUI — It may contain old account settings.
- 📥 Install apps manually, not through Restore from Google.
- 🔒 Set a new password for the lock screen immediately.

Resetting to factory settings does not delete data from the memory card (microSD). If it had personal files, format it separately through the PC or in the Settings menu → Storage.
