Why Deleting a Google Account on Xiaomi is Not as Easy as It Seems
Have you bought a used Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 and the previous owner forgot to log out of his Google account? Or want to sell your smartphone but the system is stubbornly keeping your email from being deleted? Chances are you've already seen that standard deletion through settings doesn't always work β especially when it comes to FRP (Factory Reset Protection), a feature that locks your phone after a reset if it has a Google account.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to remove Gmail from Xiaomi devices on MIUI 14/15 and HyperOS, including bypassing FRP, resetting via Fastboot, and even methods for cases when the phone is locked. Importantly, some actions can lead to data loss β if the phone is enabled with MIUI encryption, after reset via Fastboot, all files will be irretrievably deleted.
Before you start, check:
- πΉ Is there access to settings? If so, try a way to do it. β1 β2.
- πΉ Phone's locked, then move on to the ways. β3ββ5.
- πΉ Is two-factor authentication enabled? Without a confirmation code, deletion may not be possible.
Method 1: Standardly delete Google account through MIUI settings
If you have access to your phone and you remember your account password, this is the easiest method, and it works for MIUI 12-15 and HyperOS.
Instructions:
- Open Settings β Google Accounts.
- Select the account that needs to be deleted.
- Click Delete Account (or Delete Account in New Versions).
- Confirm the action with a password or graphical key of the device.
β οΈ Note: If you reset to factory settings after deleting, the phone may require you to enter the remote account data due to the FRP. To avoid this, delete all Google accounts first, and then reset your settings.
Backup your data | Make sure you know your account password | Disable two-factor authentication (if enabled) | Check that your phone is not in Lost Device mode

Method 2: Delete via the Users and Accounts menu (for MIUI 14+)
In newer versions of MIUI, the path to deleting your account has changed. If the first method didn't work, try this one:
- Go to Settings β Memory β Users and accounts.
- Select Google from the list of accounts.
- Click on the desired email, then delete the account.
- Confirm the deletion via Password/PIN/pattern lock of the phone.
If the Delete Account button is inactive or absent, this means that:
- πΈ The account is the main one (associated with the device as the owner).
- πΈ Administrative lock enabled (e.g., through Find My Device).
- πΈ The phone is under corporate management (if issued by the company).

If the button "Delete account" is gray, try temporarily to turn off the Internet (plane mode) - sometimes this will unlock the option.
Method 3: Reset to factory settings (Hard Reset) and bypass FRP
If the phone is locked or previous methods have failed, there is a hard reset, but be prepared for the device to require you to enter your old Google account (FRP-lockdown).
How to reset Xiaomi to factory settings:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the Power button + Volume up until the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select Wipe Data β Wipe All Data.
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion.
After resetting, the phone can:
- π± Start as new (if you are new) FRP switched off).
- π Require login/password from your old account (if you have a login/password) FRP active).
What if the phone requires an old account after a reset?

- Connect your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode (clip Power + Volume down).
- Enter the command to check the connection: fastboot devices If the device is determined, continue.
- FRP: Fastboot erase frp
- Reboot the phone: fastboot reboot
β οΈ Note: On some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 11 and later), fastboot erase frp may fail due to bootloader locking.
| Xiaomi model | Does it support fastboot erase frp? | Alternative method |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/10 Pro | β Yes. | β |
| POCO X3/X4 | β Yes. MIUI 12β13) | On MIUI 14+ β only through unlocking the bootloader |
| Xiaomi 12/13/14 | β No. | Official Unblocking or Service Center |
| Redmi 9/9A | β Yes. | You can use the Mi Flash Tool for firmware |
Method 5: Contact Xiaomi Service Center (official method)
If all previous methods failed, you should contact a Xiaomi authorized service center, which is the only legal way to delete your Google account if:
- π You have checks or a warranty card on your phone.
- π Your phone is locked and you donβt know your old account details.
- π οΈ The device is blocked Mi Account (Xiaomi account).
