A suspended Xiaomi smartphone is a problem that almost every user has faced: the screen does not respond to touch, the buttons do not work, and the device turns into a brick in the middle of an important call or game. The reasons can be different from overloading the system to a firmware failure. But don't panic - in 90% of cases, the phone can be brought back to life without going to the service center.
The main rule is not to try to immediately remove the battery (on modern Xiaomi models this is impossible without disassembling the case) and not to press all the buttons in a row. Act consistently, starting with the safest methods. In this article, we will discuss all the current ways of restarting, from a simple soft reset to an emergency reboot via Fastboot, and also explain how to avoid data loss.
If your Xiaomi is stuck on the MIUI logo or the screen is black after the upgrade, the reasons and solutions will be different β read about this in a separate chapter.
1.Soft reboot: the first step when getting stuck
If Xiaomiβs smartphone responds to taps but is slow or late, try a soft reboot. This method is data-safe and works on 99% of models, from the Redmi Note 7 to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.
For this:
- Press the power button (usually located on the right) for 10-15 seconds.
- Wait for the off menu or vibration to appear.
- Select βRestartβ or continue holding the button until the screen is turned off.
If you've had a soft reboot, you're going to have a deeper problem, maybe a damaged app or a misupdated MIUI, and then you go to the next method.
β οΈ Warning: Donβt confuse soft reboot with forced shutdown (described below) The first method keeps all open processes open, the second method interrupts them, which can lead to the loss of unsaved data in applications.
Connect your phone to charge (if the battery is under 10%)
Close all background apps (if the screen reacts)
Check if the body is overheated (let it cool for 5-10 minutes)
Take a screenshot of the error (if possible) for diagnosis-->
Forced shutdown: if the screen does not respond
When a Xiaomi smartphone is completely frozen β it doesn't respond to touch, doesn't turn off through the menu, and the screen is either black or frozen in one image β a hard reset is required, a technique that simulates battery extraction (which is not possible on current models).
Instructions for most Xiaomi/Redmi/POCO devices:
- Press the power button + volume button at the same time.
- Hold them for 20-30 seconds (even if the screen goes out after 10 seconds β donβt let go!).
- After the vibration or appearance of the MI logo, release the buttons.
On some models (e.g. POCO F3 or Xiaomi 12T), the combination may differ:
- π Power button + Volume reduction β for devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon.
- π Power button + Both volume buttons for flagships (Xiaomi 13 Pro, Mix Fold 2).
If the phone does not turn on after a forced shutdown, connect it to charging for 15-20 minutes, then try again.

3.Reboot to Recovery Mode: When Standard Methods Fail
If a soft and hard reboot didnβt help, and Xiaomiβs smartphone is stuck on the logo or gives out a No Command error, itβs time to move to Recovery mode.
How to log in to Recovery Mode:
- Turn off your phone (if it doesnβt turn off, use the method in the previous section).
- Press the power button + volume button.
- Hold until the MI logo and menu appear in English/Chinese.
The Recovery menu has options:
- π Reboot - a normal reboot.
- π§Ή Wipe Data β Complete reset (deletes all data!).
- ποΈ Wipe Cache β Cache Clearance (Secure for Data).
- π₯ Apply update β installing firmware with SD-map.
β οΈ Note: If you choose Wipe Data, the phone will return to factory settings. All photos, contacts and apps will be deleted (unless you have a backup in the Mi Cloud!
What to do if you recover in Chinese?
4. Hangs on the MIUI logo: causes and solutions
If Xiaomi doesnβt load beyond the logo (endless download), the problem lies deeper.
- π Failed update MIUI (interrupted).
- π οΈ Damage to system files (for example, after manual removal of applications).
- π Failure after battery discharge (if the phone is turned off at 0%).
- π€ Conflict after obtaining root rights.
Priority decisions:
| Method | Action. | Risk of data loss | Implementation time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleaning up the cache in Recovery | Enter Recovery β Choose Wipe Cache | No. | 2-5 minutes |
| Related: Retreat of the update | In Recovery, select Apply update β specify the path to the old firmware | No (if the firmware is compatible) | 10-15 minutes |
| Reset to factory | In Recovery, select Wipe Data | Yes (all data deleted) | 5-10 minutes |
| Firmware through Fastboot | Connect to your PC and use the Mi Flash Tool | Yeah (unless you back up) | 20-30 minutes |
If the phone freezes after the update MIUI 14/15, Try to roll back to the previous version. To do this, download the official firmware from the Xiaomi Firmware website, transfer it to the previous version. SD-Map and select Recovery: Apply update β Choose from SD card.
π‘
Before resetting data, try connecting your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode (power button + volume reduction) and copy important files using the ADB or Mi PC Suite program.
5. Emergency reboot via Fastboot (for advanced)
If none of the previous methods worked, the Fastboot mode remains, allowing you to flash your phone through your computer even if the system doesn't boot, a method that is suitable for Xiaomi models with an unlocked bootloader.
What you need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with Windows/macOS/Linux.
- π Cable USB (preferably original).
- π¦ The Mi Flash Tool program or ADB/Fastboot.
- π Official firmware for your model (download from xiaomifirmwareupdater.com).
Step-by-step:
- Turn off your phone (if necessary).
- Press the power button + volume reduction before the screensaver Fastboot (robot labeled Fastboot).
- Connect your smartphone to your PC.
- Open the Mi Flash Tool, select the downloaded firmware and press Flash.
- Wait until the cable is completed (donβt turn off the cable!).
β οΈ Note: Fastboot removes all data unless you choose Clean All and Lock (in which case the phone will also block the bootloader). If you have unlocked root rights, you will have to retrieve them after you have firmware.
π‘
Fastboot is the last chance to bring your phone back to life if other methods don't work, but it requires technical skills and official firmware for your model.
6. Prevention of hangings: how to avoid problems in the future
To ensure that Xiaomi does not hang out in the future, watch out for:
- π± Free memory: Leave at least 10% of free space.
- π Updates MIUI: Install them on time, but not through beta channels.
- π« Suspicious Apps: Only download software from Google Play or Mi App Store.
- π Battery Charging: Do not allow a discharge below 5%.
- π§Ή Cleaning the cache: once a month, clean the cache in Settings β Warehouse β Cleanup.
If the phone starts to brake before freezing, check:
- Body temperature (overheating leads to failures).
- Work. SIM-Maps (sometimes hangings cause network problems).
- Viruses (can be scanned by Google Play Protect or Dr.Web)
For models with AMOLED-screens (Xiaomi) 12/13/14 It is also recommended to turn off the automatic brightness in the display settings - it sometimes conflicts with the sensors and causes lags.
