Why Xiaomi is Hanging Up and When You Need a Reboot
The freeze of a Xiaomi smartphone is a situation that almost every user faces, and the reasons can be different from the banal overheating of the processor to serious firmware failures. Most often, the phone hangs on the MIUI logo, stops responding to touches or completely turns off the screen, leaving only the backlight. In 80% of cases, the problem is solved by simply rebooting, but it is important to choose the right method to avoid aggravating the situation.
Modern Xiaomi models (such as the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 or Mi 11) are equipped with protection against hardware failures, but even they are not immune to software conflicts. For example, hanging on an update is a common problem after installing a fresh version of MIUI. In such cases, a soft reboot may not work, and you will have to use Hard Reset or Fastboot mode.
Before you start taking radical measures, check:
- π Battery level β if it is below 5%, the phone may not turn on after restarting.
- π₯ Body temperature - overheating over 45Β°C often leads to emergency shutdown.
- π± Reaction to connect charging β if the charging indicator appears, the system is partially operational.
Method 1: Soft reboot (if the phone responds to buttons)
If Xiaomiβs screen isnβt completely frozen, but only slows down or doesnβt respond to touch, try the standard reboot, which is safe and doesnβt cause data loss.
Instructions:
- Press the power button for 5-10 seconds.
- Wait for the menu with the options to Turn Off, Reboot and Emergency mode.
- Select Reboot and confirm the action.
If the menu doesnβt appear, but the phone vibrates or makes sounds, try the button combination:
- π± On most models: Power button + Loudness up (hold 10-15 seconds).
- π On older devices (e.g. Redmi) 4X): Power button + Loudness down.
βοΈ Checking before soft reboot
β οΈ Warning: If after a soft reboot, the phone hangs on the logo again MIUI, This may indicate that the system files are damaged, and you'll need to restore them through Recovery.
Method 2: Forced Reset (Hard Reset)
When Xiaomi is not fully responsive to the taps and the screen remains black or frozen, a forced reboot will help, a technique that mimics battery extraction (which is not possible on modern smartphones with a fixed battery).
Algorithm of action:
- Press the Power button + Volume up for 15-20 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the screen goes out (or the Xiaomi logo appears).
- Wait 1-2 minutes β the phone should turn on normally.
On some models (e.g. POCO F3 or Mi 10T), the combination may differ:
| Xiaomi model | Button combination | Retention time |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 11/12 | Food + Volume up | 15-20 sec. |
| POCO X4 Pro | Food + Volume Down | 10-12 sec. |
| Mi 11 Ultra | Power + both volume buttons | 20+ seconds |
| Redmi 9A/9C | Food (long-term) | 25-30 sec. |
π‘
If the phone turns on after a forced reboot but freezes again after a few minutes, check the space in the memory (Settings β Memory). A filled storage (over 90%) often causes crashes.
Method 3: Reboot with Recovery Mode
If the soft and forced reboots didnβt work, the next step is Recovery Mode, a service menu that allows you to reset, clear your cache, or reinstall your firmware. Importantly, logging into Recovery on models with a locked bootloader (such as global versions of Xiaomi) may require you to unlock through Mi Unlock.
How to log in to Recovery:
- Turn off the phone (if it doesnβt respond, use Forced Reboot from Method 2).
- Press the Power button + Volume up and hold until the MIUI logo appears.
- Release the buttons when you see the Recovery menu (usually in English or Chinese).
From the Recovery menu, select:
- π Reboot β Reboot to System β Regular Reboot.
- π§Ή Wipe & Reset β Wipe Cache β Cache Clearance (without data loss).
- β οΈ Wipe Data β Factory Reset β Full reset (deletes all data!).
β οΈ Note: Some firmware (e.g. Xiaomi.EU) may have different menu names. If you see Fastboot instead of Recovery, you're in firmware mode, in which case release the buttons and try again.
What happens if Recovery does not open?
Method 4: Reboot via Fastboot (for power users)
Fastboot is a low-level firmware and diagnostic tool that is used when Xiaomi doesn't load even in Recovery. Careful: the wrong actions in Fastboot can turn the phone into a brick.
How to log in to Fastboot:
- Turn off your phone (if necessary).
- Press the Power button + Volume down for 10-15 seconds.
- Connect your phone to your PC via USB (if you plan to flash it).
In Fastboot mode, the screen will show a screensaver with a rabbit in a hat-eared.
- π₯οΈ On PC: Use the command fastboot reboot
- π± On the phone: Hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds to force shutdown.
If your phone is stuck in Fastboot and doesnβt respond to commands, try:
- π Shut down the cable USB (Sometimes the device gets stuck due to driver conflict).
- π Connect charging - sometimes helps to exit the mode.
π‘
Fastboot is a powerful tool, but it's dangerous. Without firmware experience, you'd better go to a service center, especially if the phone is warranty-free.
Method 5: Reboot via ADB (if USB debugging is enabled)
If your Xiaomi has previously been activated debugging via USB (Settings β About Phone β MIUI β 7 taps by build number β For developers β Debugging by USB), you can restart the device through your computer.
Instructions:
- Connect your phone to your PC with a cable (preferably original).
- Open the command line (Win + R β enter cmd).
- Enter the commands in order: adb devices (the name of your device should appear) adb reboot
If the phone is frozen in a way that is not detected by adb devices, try:
- π Reconnect the cable or change the cable USB-port.
- π Use the adb kill-server command and then repeat the adb devices.
β οΈ Attention: On models with MIUI 13+ You may need to have additional debugging confirmation on your phone screen. If the screen doesn't respond, this method won't work.
Method 6: Emergency reboot when getting stuck on the MIUI logo
If Xiaomi is stuck on the MIUI logo and doesnβt go any further, the problem may be a damaged boot section or a conflict of Magisk/Xposed modules.
Option 1: Clearing the cache through Recovery
- Enter Recovery (see Method 3).
- Choose Wipe & Reset β Wipe Cache.
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
Option 2: Reverse the update (if the freeze started after the update)
- π₯ Download the previous version MIUI For your model from en.miui.com.
- π Rename the file to update.zip And put it in the root folder of the phone.
- π In Recovery, select Install update.zip.
Option 3: Reset to factory settings (last chance)
If nothing works, Factory Reset remains. Warning: it will delete all data, including photos, contacts and apps. SD-map SIM, if there are.
π‘
Before resetting, try connecting your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode and copy the data via Mi PC Suite (if the device is detected).
Method 7: Hardware reboot (if the phone doesn't turn on at all)
When Xiaomi doesnβt show signs of life (it doesnβt vibrate, it doesnβt warm up, it doesnβt respond to charging), there are two possible scenarios:
- Battery is dead β connect to charging for 30-60 minutes, then try a forced reboot.
- Hardware failure β damage to the motherboard, power controller or battery.
What to do:
- π Connect the original charger and leave it for 1-2 hours. Sometimes the discharged battery shows no signs of charging in the first 10-15 minutes.
- π Try another charger or cable (preferably with Quick Charge support).
- π οΈ If the phone does not respond to charging and buttons, carry to the service - self-repair can aggravate the problem.
On models with a non-removable battery (all Xiaomi after 2018) it is strictly forbidden to try to remove the battery yourself - this will lead to a loss of warranty and the risk of short circuit.
