Why Xiaomi TVs may require a restart
Xiaomi TVs (Mi TV, Redmi TV, Mi TV Q, and others) run on Android TV or PatchWallβs proprietary shell, making them vulnerable to typical smart device problems. Hanging, slow interfaces, app errors, or even a complete shutdown may require a reboot or reset. But unlike smartphones, TVs donβt always have an obvious shutdown button, and incorrect actions can lead to data loss or exacerbate the problem.
The main reasons why users are looking for ways to reboot Xiaomi TV are:
- π System freeze β the TV does not respond to the remote or buttons, the image freezes".
- π’ Interface brakes β slow scrolling menus, long loading of applications.
- π΄ Black screen β the TV turns on but does not show the image (the indicator is on).
- π Errors after updates β firmware failure or application conflict.
- π Password Blocking β Forgotten PIN-code or account.
It's important to understand that rebooting and resetting are different procedures, the first simply restarts the system, the second simply returns the TV to the factory settings, deleting all data. In this article, we'll look at both options, as well as the rare cases where forced reboots are required through service menus or hardware buttons.
Method 1: Softly reboot via menu (without data loss)
The safest method is software-based reboot through the settings of the TV, which is suitable if the device responds to the remote or buttons, but it is unstable, and it does not delete data or require an Internet connection.
Instructions for all Xiaomi TV models (2018-2026):
- Press the Settings button (βοΈ) on the remote or select "Settings" in the main menu.
- Go to Device and Preferences β About TV (or System β About TV for older versions).
- Select the Restart option.
- Confirm the action by pressing OK.
If the Reboot item is missing (this happens on some firmware), use an alternative path:
- πΉ Open the Settings. β Annexes β System applications.
- πΉ Find Android System or Launcher, select Stop (this will cause a restart of the interface).
Close all applications
Turn it off. USB-accumulator
Make sure the remote is working.
Connect the TV to the network (in case of updates)-->
β οΈ Warning: If the TV is getting stuck during the boot phase (the Mi logo flashes or burns constantly), a soft reboot via the menu is not available - go to method 3 or 4.
Method 2: Reboot via remote (hidden combination)
Few people know, but Xiaomi TV remotes support hidden button combinations for forced reboot, which works even if the TV is partially frozen, but responds to the remote signals.
Follow the following sequence:
- Press and hold the Menu + Home buttons simultaneously for 5-7 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the reboot menu appears on the screen or the TV starts to turn off.
For remotes without a Menu button (such as on Mi TV Stick or newer models), use the combination:
Home (Home) + Back (β) + Hold 10 secondsIf the combinations do not work, check:
- π Battery charge in the remote (replace with new ones).
- πΆ Distance to TV (maximum 5 meters).
- π Reconnect the remote by pressing Pair on the back of the TV (if there is a button).
π‘
If the remote is lost or broken, use the official Mi Remote app (available for Android/iOS) to control your TV over Wi-Fi.
Method 3: Forced button reboot on the TV
When the TV is completely frozen (it does not respond to the remote, black screen, flashing indicator), then only the hardware reset through the physical buttons remains.
| Model Xiaomi TV | Location of buttons | Reboot combination |
|---|---|---|
| Mi TV 4/4S/4A (2018β2020) | Right or bottom, under the logo | Hold the Power for 10-15 seconds |
| Mi TV Q1/Q2/Q2Q (2021β2023) | Back panel, next to HDMI ports | Power + Volume Down (10 sec) |
| Redmi TV A/X (budget) | Under the bottom frame, right | Hold the Power until the relay clicks |
| Mi TV P1/P1E (2022β2026) | Hidden under a stub on the back panel | Power + Input (12 seconds) |
The forced reset process:
- Turn off the TV for 30 seconds (this will reset the capacitors).
- Find the Power button (usually marked with a dot or symbol) β).
- Hold it for 10-15 seconds until you hear a click or see the indicator blink.
- Release the button and wait 1-2 minutes β the TV should turn on automatically.
β οΈ Attention: On Mi models TV 5 Pro and later hold the Power button for more than 20 seconds can start recovery mode. If you see a menu with an Android robot, do not choose Wipe Data, otherwise you will lose all data!
What to do if the Power button doesnβt work?
Method 4: Reboot with Recovery Mode (for experienced)
If the TV is turned on but constantly restarted (bootloop) or produces a "No Command" error, access to Recovery Mode will be required, a method that is suitable for fixing serious firmware failures, but requires caution.
How to log in to Recovery Mode:
- Turn the TV off the socket.
- Hold the Power button on the body.
- Connect the power without releasing Power for 15-20 seconds.
- When the Mi logo or Android robot appears, release the button.
In the recovery menu (manage β Volume and Power buttons):
- π Reboot system now - a regular reboot.
- ποΈ Wipe cache partition β clearing the cache (safe, data is not deleted).
- β οΈ Wipe data/factory Reset β Complete reset (deletes everything, including accounts).
- π₯ Apply update from ADB β Update via computer (for advanced applications).
For most problems, you just need to choose Wipe cache partition, then Reboot system now. If the TV does not turn on even after that, you will need to flash it (see method 5).
π‘
Clearing the cache through Recovery Mode deletes temporary files, but does not affect personal data (applications, Wi-Fi settings, accounts).
Method 5: Complete reset to factory settings
Hard Reset is a last resort, when other methods have failed.
- πΊ All installed applications.
- π Linked accounts (Mi Account, Google, Netflix, etc.).
- π‘ Wi-Fi and network settings.
- π― Personal image/sound settings.
How to reset:
Option 1: Menu (if the TV is running)
- Go to Settings β Device and Preferences β Reset.
- Select Factory Data Reset (Factory Data Reset).
- Enter. PIN-code (if installed) or password from Mi Account.
- Confirm the action β the TV will restart and start the cleaning process (it will take 5-10 minutes).
Option 2: Recovery Mode (if the TV is not turned on)
- Enter Recovery Mode (see Method 4).
- Select Wipe data/factory reset.
- Confirm by selecting Yes.
- Once completed, select Reboot system now.
β οΈ Note: Xiaomi TVs with PatchWall (Indian models) may need to re-link to the Mi Account that was used when first turned on. If you forget your account details, the TV will become a βbrickβ β you will need to contact the service center to unlock it.
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
Even after a reboot, the TV may not work properly, and let's look at the typical problems and ways to fix them:
| Symptoms. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| TV is turned on but no image (black screen) | Failure of the graphic driver or backlight | Hold Power 30 seconds β turn off power for 5 minutes β turn on again |
| Constant reboot (bootloop) | Damaged firmware or update conflict | Log in to Recovery Mode and select Wipe cache partition |
| No sound after the reboot. | Resetting audio settings | Go to Settings β Sound β Resetting sound settings |
| The remote does not work after resetting | Resetting Bluetooth pairing | Press Pair on the back of the TV or connect the remote via Mi Home |
If after reset, the TV requires activation via Mi Account, but you do not remember the data:
- π Try to restore your password on account.xiaomi.com.
- π§ If a phone number is linked, ask for a confirmation code.
- π οΈ In extreme cases, contact the Xiaomi service center with proof of purchase.
