Why Mi Accounts Are Blocking Your Phone and What to Do
Mi Account passwords are one of the most common problems faced by Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphone owners. The companyβs security system links the device to the account, and without the right login data, the phone becomes a brick: you canβt reset, reflash or even use basic features, especially critical for models with MIUI 12+, where protection has become tougher.
The problem is that Xiaomi doesn't provide a formal password reset mechanism without proof of ownership. Even after a hard reset via Recovery Mode, the phone will require you to enter your account information. This is done to combat device theft, but it creates problems for legitimate users. In this article, all the current ways to untie your account, including official and workarounds.
Important: After April 1, 2026, Xiaomi tightened its unlock policy, which now requires confirmation through a passport or purchase check for some methods, including devices with MIUI 14/15 and later.
Method 1: Recover password through the official Mi website
The most legal and secure method is to restore access to your account through a web interface, which works if you have a backup email or phone number attached to your account.
- Go to the recovery page: account.xiaomi.com/pass/forgetPassword.
- Enter the login (email or phone) from the blocked account.
- Choose a Recovery Method: π§ By email, the code will come to the linked mail. π± Po Po Po SMS β If the number is confirmed in the account. π Backup email β if the main one is not available.
Follow the instructions on the site to create a new password.
After successful recovery, the password is synced to the phone within 5-10 minutes.
- π« Check the Spam folder in the mail - a letter from no-reply@xiaomi.com Maybe it's there.
- π« Make sure the phone number has not changed (SMS come on).
- π« Try another browser or device β sometimes ad blockers interfere with page loading.
π‘
If the site asks to enter a captcha when restoring, but it does not appear, clear the browser cache or use incognito mode.
Method 2: Unlocking through Mi Unlock Tool (for flashable devices)
If password recovery is not possible and the phone supports bootloader unlocking, you can use the Mi Unlock Tool, the official Xiaomi utility, which is suitable for models with unlocked bootloader or those that were previously unlocked.
Download Mi Unlock Tool from the official website |Install ADB and Fastboot |Enable developer mode on your phone |Connect your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode
-->
1. Download the Mi Unlock Tool (the version must match your MIUI).
2. Transfer the phone to Fastboot mode:
- Turn off the device.
- Press the Power button + Volume down before the Fastboot logo appears.
3. Connect your phone to your PC via USB and launch MiUnlock.exe.
4. Sign in to the same Mi Account as on your phone (if you remember the login).
β οΈ Note: If the phone hasnβt been unlocked before, Xiaomi will require you to wait 72-360 hours (depending on the model) before first unlocking!
| Xiaomi model | The waiting time for unlocking (2026) | Is document confirmation required? |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 12/13, POCO X5 | 168 hours (7 days) | Yes (for some regions) |
| Xiaomi 13/14, Mix Fold 3 | 360 hours (15 days) | Yes. |
| Redmi 10A/10C, POCO M5 | 72 hours (3 days) | No. |
Method 3: Bypassing Mi Accounts through EDL-The mode (for experienced users)
EDL (Emergency Download Mode) is a firmware emergency mode that allows you to reflash your phone to bypass locking. This method is risky: if you make a mistake, your device can turn into a brick.
- π§ You have experience with Fastboot and ADB.
- π§ You are ready to lose all the data on your phone.
- π§ You have an authorized firmware download account (for example, through XiaomiTool). V2).
Instructions:
- Download the firmware for your model from the Xiaomi Firmware Updater website (choose the Fastboot version).
- Install Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 drivers (for Snapdragon-powered phones).
- Transfer the phone to EDL: adb reboot edl If the command is not working, use testpoint (closing contacts on the board - requires disassembling the device).
- Swipe your phone through MiFlash with the clean all option.
β οΈ Note: from 2023, Xiaomi will block the firmware through EDL for devices MIUI 14+ To bypass you will need to pay for credits in services such as Xiaomi Authorized Unlock (cost of the service). $5 $30).
What is Testpoint and How to Use It?
Method 4: Contact Xiaomi Support
If the phone is legally purchased and you have supporting documents, you can try to unlock your account through official support.
- π Check or invoice with serial number (IMEI) phone.
- π Passport or other identification card (for some regions).
- π Photo box with IMEI (if retained).
Procedure:
- Take a picture of your phone's IMEI (on the box or under the battery, and you can also find out via the *#06# command).
- Write in support: π via the official website (section "Contact Us"). π§ On email: support@xiaomi.com (for international users). π± Mi Community (Xiaomi Forum) β Sometimes the answer comes faster.
Attach scans of documents and describe the situation (for example: "I bought a phone in 2023, forgot the password from the Mi Account, please unlock").
The timeframe for processing the request is 3 to 14 days, and in 60% of cases Xiaomi will meet the request if the documents are in order.
- π Try to re-write with other wordings.
- π Contact the service center β sometimes they have more authority.

Method 5: Alternative methods (at your own risk)
If the official methods have not worked, some users resort to undocumented methods, and we do not recommend using them, but we will give you for completeness:
- Use of MIUI vulnerabilities: Some versions of MIUI 10-12 had bugs that allowed them to bypass the block through ADB. For example, the command: adb shell am start -n com.android.settings/.MiuiAccountSyncSettings On MIUI 13+, these vulnerabilities are closed.
- Services "unblock for money": on the Internet there are many offers such as "Unblock Mi Account for money" $10." Risks: πΈ Fraud (after payment may disappear). π The device may remain locked. π± Possible malware installation.
Reflashing through third-party tools
Programs like XiaomiTool or Miflash Pro promise to bypass the lock, but often require payment and do not guarantee the result.
β οΈ Note: The use of informal methods may lead to:
- π¨ Block IMEI (The phone will lose communication with the network).
- π¨ Loss of warranty (if the device is under warranty).
- π¨ Phone failure (in case of firmware errors).
π‘
Any unofficial unlocking methods may violate Xiaomiβs policy and result in permanent locking of the device.
What to do if nothing helps: extreme measures
If all of these methods fail, radical solutions remain:
- Selling the phone as is: on sites like Avito or OLX There is a demand for blocked Xiaomi β they are bought for spare parts or unlocked through service centers: π± Model and condition of the telephone. π Reason for blocking ("Forgotten password from Mi Account"). π° Prices 30-50% below market.
- Replacement of the motherboard: Service centers may offer to replace the fee with a new one (without reference to the account). The cost is from 5 000 to 15 000 rubles depending on the model: πΈ It is sometimes cheaper to buy a new phone). π§ Risk of losing data (if backup is not made).
Use of the phone in limited mode
Some functions (calls, SMS, camera) can work even with a blocked account.
- π Put it in. SIM-Use your phone as a "caller".
- π· Take a photo with Quick Ball (if enabled in settings).
If you decide to sell your phone, honestly state the reason for the lock, which will save time for both you and the buyer. Fraud with concealment of the lock can lead to conflicts and refunds through payment systems.
