Why canโt you just delete your Google account through your settings?
Xiaomi smartphones (including the Redmi, POCO and Mi line) use FRP (Factory Reset Protection) protection, which links the device to a Google account, which means that even after deleting an account through the phone menu, the system may require login and password input at the next reset or flashing, especially for Android 5.1+ devices, where FRP has become a mandatory security feature.
The main problem is that Xiaomi adds its own Mi Account protection layer, which works in parallel with Google FRP. If you sell a phone or transfer it to another user, it is not enough to just log out of your account. You need to completely unplug the device from both services, otherwise the new owner will not be able to activate the device after the reset. In this article, we will analyze all the current methods, including bypassing FRP for locked devices.
Method 1: Standard removal through phone settings
The easiest way is to delete your Google account directly from the device menu, which is good if your phone is not locked, you have access to settings, and you remember the password from your account. Importantly, this method does not cancel FRP, because the next time you reset, the system can request your account data again.
Instructions:
- ๐ฑ Open the Settings app (cog icon).
- ๐ค Go to Google Accounts (or Accounts) โ Google on MIUI 12+).
- ๐๏ธ Select the account you want and click Delete the account.
- ๐ Confirm the action with a password or a graphical key of the phone.
Synchronization of contacts and photos completed|Backup of chats (WhatsApp, Telegram) created|Wi-Fi password saved|Two-factor authentication is disabled (if not required)-->
Once removed, restart your phone. If you plan to sell the device, be sure to perform a factory reset (see Method 3). Without this, the new owner may face FRP lock.

If there is no โDeleteโ button in the account list, try logging out first (Account Management โ Sign out), then try again.
Method 2: Uncoupling through Googleโs web interface (for locked devices)
If the phone is locked after a reset and requires you to enter your previous Google account, you can try removing the device from the trusted list in Googleโs security settings.
- ๐ You have access to password and two-factor authentication (if enabled) of the linked account.
- ๐ก The device was previously connected to the Internet through this account.
- โณ Itโs been 72 hours since the last sync (otherwise Google may not show the phone in the list).
Step-by-step:
- Open the Google Security page on your computer and log in.
- Scroll to the block of your devices โ Device management.
- Find your Xiaomi model (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Pro) in the list+) and press three points (โฎ) โ Get out.
- Confirm the action and wait for synchronization (may take up to 24 hours).
What if the device is not listed?
After removing the device from the list, try setting up the phone again. If FRP lock remains, proceed to Method 4 (bypassing ADB).
Method 3: Factory reset with pre-uncoupling Mi Account
Xiaomi devices, in addition to Google FRP, also have Mi Account protection, the manufacturer's own lock system, which, if you don't untie it before resetting, will require the phone to enter the username and password of the Mi Account after rebooting, which is true for all models on MIUI 9+.
How to Reset Your Phone Without Locking:
- ๐ Go to Settings. โ The phone. โ Resetting settings.
- ๐ฑ Select Delete all data (not "Reset settings"!).
- ๐ The screen will display a warning to enter the Mi Account password after reset, and click Untie the account (if available).
- ๐ Confirm the reset and wait for the reboot (it will take 5-10 minutes).
Yeah, it went smoothly.|Yeah, but the phone's locked.|No, I'm afraid to do something wrong.|No, the phone's new.-->
| Action. | Effects of consequences | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Resetting without detachment of Mi Account | Blocking after rebooting with the requirement to enter a login / password | Restore access via [Mi page](https://account.xiaomi.com/) or use Method 5 |
| Reset with Mi Account, but without Google deleting | FRP locking at the first setup | Bypassing ADB (Method 4) or waiting 72 hours to automatically unblock |
| Delete both accounts before resetting | The phone is ready to be handed over to the new owner. | โ |
If you donโt have an Untie Account option, your Xiaomi model is using an outdated version of MIUI (up to 11), in which case you will have to enter your Mi Account data manually or use workaround methods after the reset (see Method 5).
Method 4: Bypassing FRP through ADB (for advanced users)
If the phone is locked after a reset and requires data from a previous Google account, you can try removing FRP via Android Debug Bridge (ADB), a method that works on most Xiaomi devices with Android 8-13, but requires a connection to a computer and installing special drivers.
What you need:
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Computer with Windows/macOS/Linux.
- ๐ USB-cable (original, without damage).
- ๐ ๏ธ Utilities: ADB Fastboot, drivers for Xiaomi.
- ๐ File. frp_bypass.apk (can be downloaded from the forums XDA Developers or 4PDA).
Instructions:
- Connect the locked phone to the computer.
- Open the command prompt (Windows) or terminal (macOS/Linux) in the folder with ADB.
- Enter the commands in order: adb shell am start -n com.google.android.gsf.login/ adb shell am start -n com.google.android.gsf.login.LoginActivity
- The phone will open a Google account entry window, and instead of login, type in any email, then go back.
- Install. frp_bypass.apk through ADB: adb install frp_bypass.apk
- Launch the app and follow the instructions on the screen to reset FRP.
๐ก
ADB-The method doesnโt work on all Xiaomi models, but on newer devices (e.g. Xiaomi). 13T or Redmi K60) You may need to unlock the bootloader or use special firmware.
โ ๏ธ Attention: Use ADB roundabout FRP This may violate Googleโs terms of use. Some devices may experience problems with Google Play services after such a reset (e.g., the error โDevice is not certified").
Method 5: Unlocking with Mi Unlock Tool (for Mi Account)
If the phone is locked due to a link to Mi Account, the official way to unlock is to use the Mi Unlock Tool utility. This method is suitable if you remember the username and password from the Xiaomi account, but the device does not accept them after reset (for example, due to a change of region or server error).
Step-by-step:
- Download Mi Unlock Tool from the official website and install it on your computer.
- Start your phone in Fastboot mode: Turn off the device. Press Power button + Volume down for 10 seconds. Connect the phone to your computer.
MI Account
Unlock
Important nuances:
- ๐ The Mi Account must be tied to the phone before locking, and if you create it later, unlocking it won't work.
- ๐ Xiaomi limits unlocks to no more than 1 device in 30 days for new accounts.
- ๐ฑ In some models (for example, POCO F5) You need to pre-link the account to the device in the settings (Settings) โ Mi Account โ Tie the device).
โ ๏ธ Warning: Once unlocked through the Mi Unlock Tool, all data on the phone will be erased, including files in internal memory.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
When decoupling Google and MI accounts from Xiaomi phones, users often face typical problems, and here are the most common ones and ways to solve them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| "Device locked. Enter the account you used before." | FRP protection is active, Google account is not deleted before reset | Use Method 2 (Delete via Web Interface) or Method 4 (ADB) |
| "This device is reset. Enter the Mi Account password." | The phone is tied to a Xiaomi account that wasn't untied | Restore access to Mi Account or use the Mi Unlock Tool (Method 5) |
| "Can't connect to the server. Try again later." | Problems with Internet connection or servers Xiaomi/Google | Check your Wi-Fi connection, try using mobile internet or try again in 24 hours |
| "Device not certified" after FRP bypass | Google Services Integrity Broken Due to ADB Use | Fastboot your phone with official firmware or wait for automatic certification (up to 7 days) |
Another common mistake is to delete your account incompletely, such as logging out of Google but forgetting to unplug Mi Account, or vice versa, and to avoid being blocked, always do both:
- Delete your Google account through settings.
- Untie the Mi Account in the Settings โ Mi Account โ Untie the device.
- Perform factory reset.
If you're selling a phone, make sure to check it after you reset: turn it on and get to the setup stage. The device doesn't have to ask for old accounts.
