Introduction: Why Reboot Your Smartphone and When It’s Dangerous
Rebooting a Xiaomi smartphone is a standard procedure that users perform for various reasons, from the banal “hang” of the interface to trying to fix software errors. However, not everyone knows that even a regular reboot can lead to unexpected consequences — especially if you do it at the wrong time, for example, during a firmware update or write data to an internal drive.
In this article, we will look at exactly what happens to the phone when you reboot, what processes are interrupted and what processes are not. Separately, we will focus on critical situations where a forced rebuke threatens data loss, system failure or even “bricking” the device, and you will learn how to properly restart Redmi, POCO and other models to minimize the risks.
Spoiler: 90 percent of the time, nothing bad will happen, but there are 10 percent of the time when a reboot can turn into a headache, and we'll tell you how to recognize them.
What Happens to Xiaomi Phone During Reboot
When you click “Reboot” in the power menu or hold the power button, the smartphone goes through several key steps:
- Cutting down user processes – all open applications and services receive a shutdown signal, and most of them save data (e.g., draft messages or game progress).
- System services stop – background tasks, including synchronizing your Mi Account account, weather updates, geolocation, etc., are turned off.
- Operating system MIUI (or HyperOS in new models) “resets” all temporary data from RAM.
- Re-initiation of hardware components – the processor, communication modules (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 5G), the camera and sensors are diagnosed and run anew.
- System boot – the smartphone reads the boot section (boot.img), checks the integrity of the firmware and starts the interface.
The whole process takes 15 to 40 seconds depending on the model. For example, the Xiaomi 13 Pro with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor reboots faster than the Redmi Note 10 on the Snapdragon 678. But time is not important. It matters what processes were active at the time of the reboot.
If the phone was just slowing down, rebooting it would help free up RAM and eliminate the temporary lags.
- 📥 Write files to internal memory (for example, downloading large videos or updating maps in Google Maps),
- 🔄 Update the firmware through Settings → The phone. → Updating the system,
- 📸 Photo processing in the background (for example, creating a photo) HDR-snapshot),
- 🔐 Data encryption (if you have recently enabled protection in Settings) → Security),
The consequences can be unpleasant - from corrupted files to the complete inoperability of the device.
When a Reboot is Safe and When Not: A Risk Table
So to keep the coffee grounds from guessing, we've put together a table of the most common scenarios, which shows you which actions you can interrupt with a reboot and which you can't.
| Action. | Can we reboot it? | Possible consequences | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal use (social networks, instant messengers, calls) | ✅ Yes. | Loss of unsaved drafts | Reboot boldly |
| Update of firmware through About phone → System update | ❌ No. | Damage to system files, "brick" | Wait for completion or cancel the update via Settings → Apps → Software Update → Stop |
| Copy/Move Files in Internal Memory | ⚠️ Careful. | Loss or damage of files | Wait for the operation to be completed |
| Recording a video or shooting in Pro mode | ✅ Yes, but not recommended) | Video break, loss of last frames | Better stop the recording first. |
| Recovery from backup (Mi Cloud or local backup) | ❌ No. | Incomplete data recovery, errors in the application | Wait until the process is completed |
Critical information: If you see the words "Don't turn off target" on the screen while you're running through Fastboot or Recovery, the reboot will cause the phone to fail completely. EDL-service-centre.
How to Reboot Xiaomi: Step-by-step instructions
Even a simple operation like rebooting has its nuances, and here are three safe ways that are suitable for all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models:
Make sure that no files are updated or copied |
Close all applications through the multitasking menu|
Use the standard off menu |
Do not hold the power button for more than 10 seconds (risk of hard reset)-->
Method 1: Through the Menu (Recommended)
- Press and hold the power button (usually located on the right).
- In the menu that appears, select Reboot (or Restart in English firmware).
- Confirm the action if necessary.
This method is the safest, since the system manages to properly close all processes.
Method 2: The combination of buttons (when hanging)
If your phone doesn’t respond to touch, try:
- Hold the power + volume button for 8-10 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the screen goes out and the Mi logo appears.
⚠️ Note: If you hold the buttons longer than 15 seconds, some models (e.g. Xiaomi) 12T) You can switch to Fastboot mode instead of the usual restart.
Method 3: Through ADB (for advanced users)
If you have access to USB-Debugging, you can restart the phone through the command:
adb rebootThis is useful if the screen is unresponsive, but the phone is determined by the computer. For more information about setting up ADB, read our Xiaomi debugging manual.
💡
If after the reboot the phone hangs on the Mi logo for a long time (more than 5 minutes), try pressing the power button + increasing the volume to log into Recovery. From there, select Wipe cache - this often solves the problem without losing data.
What to do if the phone does not turn on after restarting
The situation when Xiaomi smartphone does not respond to the power button after a reboot, frightens users the most, the reasons can be different from a dead battery to damage to the boot partition.
Step 1: Check the charging
- 🔌 Connect the original cable and power supply.
- 🕒 Wait 15-20 minutes – sometimes a battery is not immediately dead.
- 🔄 Try another charger (preferably with Quick Charge support).
Step 2: Forced reset
If the screen remains black:
- Hold the power button + increase the volume for 20-30 seconds.
- If you see a vibration or logo, release the buttons.
Step 3: Entering Recovery Mode
If the phone is vibrating but not turning on:
- Press the power + increase the volume before the Recovery menu appears.
- Choose Reboot. → Reboot to System.
- If the system doesn’t boot, try Wipe cache (doesn’t delete data!).
What to do if your phone is stuck in a bootloop (cyclic reboot)?
⚠️ Note: If you see an Invalid error IMEI Or Baseband unknown after rebooting, which means that the communication module is damaged.
Xiaomi models with reboot features: what to look for
Not all Xiaomi smartphones behave the same way when rebooted. Here are some models that have specific nuances:
| Model | Feature | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 12/13 series | Fast reboot thanks to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1/2, but sensitive to interruption updates | Do not reboot during installation of security patches |
| Redmi Note 10/11 | Sometimes it “wilts” when restarting due to slow eMMC memory | If the screen is long, wait 1-2 minutes. |
| POCO F3/F4 | Forced Rebutt Could Reset Game Turbo Settings | After the reboot, check the performance modes in Settings → Special features |
| Xiaomi Mi A1/A2 (Android One) | There is no standard Recovery menu from Xiaomi, only stock from Google | Use Power + Volume Reduction to Reset |
If you have a POCO X3 Pro or another model with a Snapdragon 860 processor, be careful: these phones are prone to overheating.Do not reboot them immediately after intense loads (games, video rendering) to avoid thermal trottling.
Xiaomi reboot myths: what’s true and what’s not
There are many tips on rebooting Xiaomi smartphones on the Internet, but not all of them are true.
💡
The weekly reboot does NOT speed up the phone, and the current versions of MIUI and HyperOS effectively manage memory without forced reboots.
- ❌ Myth: “Rebooting once a week clears the cache and speeds up the phone». ⚠️ Reality: Cache clears automatically, and a forced reboot can interrupt background tasks (e.g., backup in Google Photos).
- ❌ Myth: If the phone is stuck, take out the battery». ⚠️ Reality: In today's Xiaomi battery is non-removable. Use a button combination to force a reboot.
- ❌ Myth: “Rebooting in Safe Mode removes viruses». ⚠️ Reality: Safe Mode disables third-party apps, but doesn't remove them. Use Google Play Protect or Mi Security to fight viruses.
- ❌ Myth: Frequent reboots ruin the battery». ⚠️ Reality: One reboot a day doesn't affect battery life. It's much more harmful to keep your phone charging for days.
Another common fear is that rebooting will reset all settings. It's not: a regular reset doesn't affect user data. The exception is hard reset, which is done through Recovery or Settings → Additional → Reset.
