Where to start: Preparing Xiaomi router for the first turn on
Xiaomi routers are some of the most popular home network solutions, thanks to their combination of price, performance and ease of setup. However, even with the most friendly interface, beginners have questions about how to connect cables correctly, what mode to choose and what to do if the indicators are on the wrong. This article covers all the steps from unpacking the box to fine-tuning dual-frequency Wi-Fi and solving typical problems.
Before you plug the device in, make sure you have everything you need. Complete with the Xiaomi router (whether itβs the budget model of the Mi Router 4A or the flagship AX6000) always go:
- π¦ The router itself with antennas (removable or built-in).
- π Power supply (important: use only original!)
- πΆ Ethernet cable (usually CAT5e or higher) for connection to a provider.
- π Brief instruction in several languages (but no details).
If you connect a router to a fiber-optic terminal (like from Rostelecom or Beeline), make sure you have an additional patch cord - it's often forgotten to put in the box. Also prepare your smartphone or computer for setup: Xiaomi offers two configuration options - via the Mi Wi-Fi mobile app or the web interface.
Step 1: Physically connect the router to the network and power
So, to start with, the most important thing is that you get the cables connected correctly, and mistakes at this point will either cause the router to not distribute the Internet or not to turn on at all.
- Choose a place for the router. Optimally - on a hill (shelf, table), in the center of the apartment, away from microwaves and large household appliances. For models with external antennas (AX3000, AX6000) turn them vertically at an angle of 45Β°.
- Put the power in the socket, and the plug in the DC-IN connector on the back of the router, and the power indicator should light up in blue or orange (depending on the model).
- Connect the router to the provider. Take an Ethernet cable (usually with yellow connectors) and paste one end into the WAN port (it is highlighted by color or signature) and the other into the LAN port on the provider's modem or directly into the fiber optic terminal.
- Connect the device to set up. Use any free LAN port on the router (usually their 2-4) and connect it to a computer or laptop. Alternatively, connect via Wi-Fi to a network called Xiaomi_XXXX (password shown on the sticker below).
If the WAN indicator does not light up after connecting the cable from the provider, check:
- π Whether the cable is inserted correctly (the connector must be clicked).
- π Whether the providerβs modem is rebooted (sometimes 1-2 minutes are required).
- π‘ Is your providerβs internet service active (call support if in doubt).

Step 2: Configure via the Mi Wi-Fi app (recommended method)
The Mi Wi-Fi mobile app (available for Android and iOS) makes it easy to set up to several taps, automatically detects the router model, offers optimal options, and even checks Internet speed.
- Download the app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Connect your smartphone to the routerβs Wi-Fi network (name and password on the sticker).
- Start Mi Wi-Fi and click Add Device β Router.
- Follow the instructions: the application will prompt you to enter a password from the Wi-Fi network (think of a reliable one, at least 8 characters), select a mode of operation (usually a βRouterβ) and configure the guest network (optional).
When choosing the type of Internet connection, specify the one that your ISP uses.
- π DHCP (Automatic Receiving IP) β for most home connections.
- π’ PPPoE β if the provider issues a login/password (for example, Beeline, Dom.ru).
- π‘ Static IP β if the provider sent a fixed setting (IP, mask, gateway, DNS).
After saving the settings, the router will restart (it will take 1-2 minutes). If the WAN indicator lights up in blue, the Internet is successfully connected. If it burns in orange, check the login data (login / password from the provider) or the type of connection.
1. Disable VPN or proxy on your smartphone.
2. Reconnect to the router's Wi-Fi network.
3. Restart the app or smartphone.-->
Step 3: Alternatively Configure via Web Interface
If you don't have a smartphone or Mi Wi-Fi app is not working, use the web interface.
- Connect your computer to the router via cable or Wi-Fi.
- Open your browser and type in the address bar 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com. If the page doesn't open, check the connection or reset the router with the Reset button (hold 10 seconds).
- Enter the login login and password. By default, this is the admin and password from the sticker (or an empty field for older models).
The interface of the web panel at Xiaomi is intuitive, but has nuances:
- π§ In the Internet section, configure the connection type (similar to the application).
- πΆ Wi-Fi can split 2.4 and 5GHz networks, change channels, or enable Mesh (for compatible models).
- π‘οΈ In Security, activate the firewall and set up access control.
Once you save the settings, the router will restart. To make sure everything works, check:
- π Internet availability on connected devices.
- π± Wi-Fi speeds in different rooms (use the Speedtest app).
- π Connection stability (whether there are breaks when downloading files).

Common mistakes and their solutions
Even when set up correctly, Xiaomi routers sometimes behave unexpectedly, and here are the typical problems and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| WAN indicator burns orange | Incorrect type of connection or data from the provider | Check the login/password for PPPoE or switch to DHCP |
| Wi-Fi works, but there is no internet. | ISP-side problems or MAC- address blocking | Reboot the provider modem or clone the MAC- address in the router settings |
| Weak Wi-Fi signal in distant rooms | Non-optimal router location or interference | Change the Wi-Fi channel in the settings or use a repeater |
| The router is constantly rebooting. | Overheating or unstable nutrition | Check the power supply and provide ventilation (do not cover the router) |
If the Xiaomi router after setting up periodically βlosesβ the Internet, try:
- π Update the firmware through Settings β Update the software.
- π§ Disable IPv6 (unless used by the provider).
- π‘ Replace DNS with public ones (e.g. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 from Google).
π‘
If the Xiaomi router does not save the settings after the reboot, reset to factory settings (reset button for 10 seconds) and configure it again.
Additional settings for experienced users
The basic setup is enough for most tasks, but Xiaomi routers also support advanced features.
- π Guest Network: Create a separate Wi-Fi hotspot for guests with limited access to the local network. Set up Wi-Fi β Guest Network.
- π Wi-Fi schedule: Turn off the Internet on children's devices at night. Set up to Security β Access control.
- π VPN- Server: Raise your own VPN to securely access your home network from outside (available on AX6000 and older).
- π QoS: Prioritize traffic for online games or video calls in Additional β QoS.
For models that support Mesh networks (for example, Xiaomi Mesh System), you can combine several routers into a single network.
- Connect the second router to the main cable or Wi-Fi.
- In the Mi Wi-Fi app, select βAdd Device to Mesh.β
- Follow the instructions β the system itself optimizes the channels and signal power.
If you use IPTV, activate IGMP Proxy mode in your LAN settings and link the LAN1 port to IPTV, which will prevent you from hanging out while watching TV.
π‘
For maximum Wi-Fi speeds on the AX3000/AX6000 models, turn on 160 MHz mode in 5 GHz settings. But note that this can reduce stability in apartment buildings.
Security: How to Protect Your Network from Hacking
Xiaomi routers have basic protection by default, but it can be strengthened.
- Change the standard password to a complex one (at least 12 characters with numbers and special signs). β Administrator password.
- Disable remote control (if not used). This closes the control panel from the Internet: Additional β Remote control.
- Enable the firewall and filtering MAC- addresses in Security β Basic settings.
- Update your firmware to the latest version β new versions have closed vulnerabilities.
To protect against attacks via Wi-Fi:
- π Use encryption WPA3 (available on newer models) or WPA2-PSK.
- π΅ Disable WPS β this protocol is vulnerable to brute force attacks.
- π€ Create a separate network for smart devices (lamps, cameras) with limited rights.
If you suspect that outsiders have connected to your network, check the list of devices in Security β Connected devices. Unknown gadgets can be blocked in one click.
