Forgot the password from Xiaomi Mi Router and can not connect to Wi-Fi or log into the control panel? This problem is familiar to many β especially if the router was configured a long time ago and the password record is lost. Fortunately, you can restore access to the device in several ways, from a simple reset through a button to using configuration backups.
In this article, we will discuss all the current methods of password recovery for Xiaomi routers (including Mi Router 4A, AX3600, AX6000, Mini, etc.), you will learn how to reset to factory settings, restore access through the Mi Wi-Fi application, use a configuration backup and even bypass authorization via Telnet (for advanced users).
Important: If you're not sure what you're doing, first check if you have a backup of your router settings, which will help you avoid reconfiguring your network after a reset. If you don't have a copy, don't worry: there are instructions in this article on how to minimize data loss.
1. Methods of password recovery: which one to choose?
Before you start resetting, determine which password you forgot:
- π Wi-Fi password -- you need to connect new devices to the network, and you can see it in the router settings if you remember the login data to the control panel.
- π Control Panel password β required to log into the routerβs web interface (usually 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com) is the default combination with a sticker on the bottom of the device.
- π± Reference to Mi Account β on some models (e.g, AX3600) After the reset, you will need authorization through the Xiaomi account to which the router was previously linked.
Depending on the situation, choose one of the methods:
| Situation | Recommended method | Difficulty | Loss of settings? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi password is forgotten, but you have access to the control panel | View the password in the router settings | β | No. |
| Forgot control panel password, but router is not tied to Mi Account | Reset via Reset button | ββ | Yes (full) |
| The router is tied to Mi Account, but you remember your account details | Reset + Authorization through Mi Account | ββ | Yes (partial) |
| No access to Mi Account or router blocked | Bypassing Telnet or appealing for support | ββββ | Maybe. |
| There's a backup of the settings. | Recovery from the backup | ββ | No. |
If you are not sure if the router is linked to your Xiaomi account, try resetting it through the Reset button. If after rebooting the device requires you to enter a username and password from Mi Account, then there is a binding, in which case without account data, it will be more difficult to restore access.
2. Method 1: Viewing the Wi-Fi password in the router settings
If you have forgotten only the Wi-Fi password, but remember the login data to the router control panel, use this method. It does not require resetting and saves all current settings.
Instructions:
- Connect to the router via cable (LAN) or Wi-Fi (if you are previously connected and the device has memorized the password).
- Open your browser and go to 192.168.31.1 or miwifi.com.
- Enter the login login and password. By default, this is the data from the sticker on the bottom of the router (usually the login is admin, the password is a combination of 8 characters).
- Go to Wi-Fi β Security settings (or Wireless β Protection depending on the model).
- The password from the network will be displayed in the Wi-Fi or Key password field. If the characters are hidden, click on the eye icon (ποΈ) or checkbox to show password.
If you donβt remember the password from the control panel, but the router is not tied to Mi Account, go to the next method β reset via the Reset button.
π‘
If you can't connect to a router over Wi-Fi, but you have access to a device that previously connected to that network (like a smartphone), look up the password saved in the Wi-Fi settings on that device. On Android, you can do this through Settings. β Wi-Fi β [name] β Share (confirmation will be required for the PIN-code-print).
3. Method 2: Resetting Xiaomi router to factory settings
If you forget your control panel password or the router is not tied to Mi Account, the most reliable way to reset access is to reset to factory settings, which will remove all current settings (including Wi-Fi passwords, guest network, parental controls), but will allow you to reconfigure the device.
Note: Mi Router AX3600, AX6000 and some others may require authorization via Mi Account, which the router was previously linked to, after reset, if you do not remember your account information, this method will not work, go to the section about bypassing the lock.
How to reset your settings:
- Find a small Reset button on the back of the router (usually recessed into the case to avoid accidentally pressing it).
- Take a paperclip, toothpick or other thin object and press the button, holding it for 10-15 seconds until the indicators on the router start flashing.
- Release the button and wait for the reboot (usually takes 1-2 minutes).
- After the reboot, the router will create a new Wi-Fi network with the name of the species Xiaomi_XXXX (where XXXX β last-minute MAC-The password for this network is on the device sticker.
If after reset, the router requires entering the username and password from Mi Account:
- π§ Enter the account information that the router was linked to. If you forget, try to restore access through account.xiaomi.com.
- π If you donβt recover your account, try the Telnet bypass method (Section 5) or contact Xiaomi with proof of purchase.

Method 3: Restore from a backup of settings
If you have previously created a backup router configuration, you can restore all settings (including passwords) without completely resetting.
- πΎ You have a backup file (usually with the.cfg or.bin extension).
- π You can log in to the router control panel (even if you forget your Wi-Fi password).
How to restore settings from the backup:
- Reset the router to factory settings (as described in method 2).
- Connect to the new network Xiaomi_XXXX (sticker).
- Log in to the control panel at miwifi.com (login and password by default β from the sticker).
- Go to Additional β Backup/Restore (or System β Backup/Restore in English).
- Click Select File, download the backup and confirm the recovery.
- Wait for the router to restart (it will take 2-3 minutes).
After recovery, all settings, including Wi-Fi and guest network passwords, will be returned to the state at the time of creation of the backup.
Where to look for backup?
β οΈ Warning: Do not restore the backup from another router model, this may cause malfunctions of the device. Also make sure that the version of the router firmware matches the version for which the backup was created (otherwise, the settings may not apply).
5. Method 4: Bypassing a lock via Telnet (for advanced)
If the Xiaomi router is tied to the Mi Account and you donβt remember your account details, you can try bypassing the lock via Telnet, which is suitable for models based on OpenWRT firmware (for example, Mi Router 3G, R3P, Mini) and requires technical skills.
You'll need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with Windows or Linux.
- π Ethernet Cable to Connect to a Router.
- π οΈ PuTTY (for Windows) or Terminal (for Windows) Linux/Mac).
Instructions:
- Connect the router to your computer via a LAN cable.
- Open PuTTY and enter IP-router address (usually 192.168.31.1).
- In the Port field, enter 23 (Telnet port by default).
- Press Open. If the connection is successful, you'll see the router greeting.
- Enter the command to reset the binding to the account: nvram set xiaomi_miwifi_remote_mgt=0 nvram commit reboot
- After the reboot, the router must allow the login without being tied to the Mi Account.
β οΈ Note: this method does not work on all models, AX3600, AX6000) Telnet is disabled by default, and to activate it, you will need to open the case and connect to the device. UART β This is a risky procedure that can take away the warranty. If you are not sure about your actions, it is better to contact Xiaomi support.
π‘
Resetting the Mi Account via Telnet only works on older Xiaomi router models (until 2020), a technique that will likely not work on newer devices due to closed firmware access.
6. Method 5: Appealing for Xiaomi
If none of the methods did not help, and the router is blocked due to binding to the Mi Account, it remains to contact official support Xiaomi.
- π You do not remember the account data to which the router is linked.
- π οΈ The methods of dumping and bypassing did not work.
- π You have proof of purchase (check, warranty card).
How to contact support:
- Go to support.xiaomi.com.
- Select the routers section.
- Write a request indicating: router models (e.g. Mi Router AX3600), serial number (specified on the sticker), problems (blocked due to Mi Account), proof of purchase (check photo).
Xiaomi
If the router is recently purchased (within the warranty period), the chances of unlocking are higher. In some cases, support may request video showing the serial number and problems.
β οΈ Warning: Don't buy "unlock" from third parties is a scam. Xiaomi's official support never asks for payment for unlocking the tied device.
7.How to avoid losing your password in the future
To avoid the problem of forgotten passwords again, follow these tips:
- π Write your passwords in a safe place (for example, in the password manager KeePass or Bitwarden). Do not store them in notes on your smartphone, if you lose your device, access will be lost.
- π Regularly create backups of router settings (every 3-6 months). β Backup.
- π± Link the router to your Mi Account, but remember the login details, which will make it easier to restore access if you forget your password.
- π Use standard passwords for the control panel (from the sticker) only temporarily - after setting up, change them to more reliable ones.
We also recommend that you enable Cloud Management in your router settings (if supported), which will allow you to manage your device via the Mi Wi-Fi app even without access to the local network.
- Wi-Fi password.
- Login/password of the control panel
Mi Account data (if the router is tied)
- Backup of settings (.cfg file)
